Brazil and Australia will face each other twice in the same international window, on September 25 and 29, 2026. This is not a FIFA requirement to play the same opponent twice: the fixtures were organized as a friendly series in Queensland, within Brazil’s first FIFA international window after the 2026 World Cup. The first match will be in Townsville and the second, four days later, in Brisbane.

The times were published by the CBF: both matches kick off at 7:00 a.m. in Brasília and 8:00 p.m. locally. Football Australia also lists both fixtures as part of the Queensland friendly series.

Why are there two matches against Australia?

The safest explanation is organizational rather than regulatory. The CBF announced two friendlies against Australia within the window running from September 21 to October 6 and presented the tour as the start of a new preparation cycle after the 2026 World Cup. On the Australian side, Football Australia describes the fixtures as marquee homecoming matches for the Socceroos after the World Cup, supported by the Queensland Government and tourism bodies.

The official sources reviewed do not say that playing the same opponent twice is required by FIFA. Nor do they give a single technical reason such as “testing two systems” or “giving minutes to two lineups.” What is confirmed is the series format: the same opponent, two cities in the same state and four days between matches.

It is reasonable to infer that the setup combines sporting and event objectives: it gives Brazil’s staff two consecutive tests against the same team, allows Australia to take one game to regional North Queensland and another to the larger Brisbane market, and keeps the operation within one state. That is an inference from the announced format, not an official motivation stated by the CBF.

What changes in Townsville on September 25

Townsville is in tropical North Queensland and hosts the first meeting at Queensland Country Bank Stadium. Stadiums Queensland describes it as a regional multipurpose venue with around 25,000 seats; the stadium’s official page lists 25,455 seats.

For Brazil’s logistics, Townsville serves as the first competitive base of the series. For followers or travelers, it is a more regional stop, with a smaller stadium than Brisbane and strong local programming around the match. Townsville City Council, for example, announced a public street party in the city center from 3:00 p.m. on September 25, ahead of the 8:00 p.m. kickoff.

The practical point is that Brazil will not remain in the same city for both friendlies. After the first game, the delegation must move to the state’s southeast before facing Australia again.

What changes in Brisbane on September 29

Four days later, the setting shifts to Brisbane, Queensland’s capital. The second friendly will be played at Suncorp Stadium, which has an official capacity of 52,500 and is close to the city center, according to the stadium website.

This mainly changes the scale of the event and the urban logistics. Suncorp has more than twice the capacity of Queensland Country Bank Stadium and sits within a larger metropolitan area with extensive transport and accommodation infrastructure. The kickoff time, however, does not change: 8:00 p.m. local time and 7:00 a.m. in Brasília.

For Brazil, the second match closes the Australian leg of the window. The official schedule then includes a friendly against India on October 3 in Kolkata at 11:00 a.m. Brasília time. Brisbane therefore also functions as the departure point for the next international leg of the trip.

How significant is the trip from Townsville to Brisbane?

The cities are in the same state and use the same time zone, so there is no new clock adjustment between matches. The distance, however, matters. The Townsville Convention Bureau gives a road distance of about 1,349 km between Brisbane and Townsville and an approximate flight time of two hours.

In practice, a four-day gap does not mean four full days of preparation in one training base. It includes post-match recovery, travel between cities, settling into a new base, training and preparation for the rematch. Because both games start at the same local time, the main change is the city and infrastructure rather than the time zone.

What fans in Brazil need to know

  • First match: September 25, Townsville, Queensland Country Bank Stadium, 7:00 a.m. Brasília time.
  • Second match: September 29, Brisbane, Suncorp Stadium, 7:00 a.m. Brasília time.
  • Gap: four days between the matches.
  • Same state and time zone: both cities are in Queensland and use the same local kickoff time.
  • Next fixture: India vs Brazil on October 3 in Kolkata, at 11:00 a.m. Brasília time.

As of September 7, 2026, the official sources reviewed confirm the dates, cities, stadiums and kickoff times. Football Australia lists local coverage on Network 10 and Paramount+ for the first match and Paramount+ for the second, but that should not be treated as confirmation of where the games will be available in Brazil. Brazilian broadcast information should be checked when a specific announcement is made.

In short: it is one two-match series, not two identical events

The two Brazil-Australia fixtures belong to the same international window but have different logistical settings. Townsville opens the series in a regional venue of about 25,000 seats; Brisbane hosts the rematch in a 52,500-seat stadium four days later. For the coaching staff, they are consecutive tests against the same opponent at the start of the post-World Cup cycle. For fans, the most useful detail is simple: both matches are scheduled for 7:00 a.m. in Brasília, even though Brazil changes cities and then continues on to India.
