Mighty Morphin Power Rangers follows the formation and transformation of Angel Grove's first major Ranger team. The story begins when Rita Repulsa is released after thousands of years of imprisonment and Zordon recruits five teenagers to protect Earth. Across three seasons and the Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers phase, the team changes members, powers and Zords, faces Rita, Lord Zedd and Master Vile, and ends its original run by losing the Mighty Morphin powers and opening the way to Power Rangers Zeo.
How the Mighty Morphin team is formed
When Rita Repulsa and her allies are released on the Moon, Zordon and Alpha 5 choose Jason Lee Scott, Kimberly Hart, Zack Taylor, Trini Kwan and Billy Cranston. Each receives a Power Coin associated with a prehistoric dinosaur and becomes, respectively, the Red, Pink, Black, Yellow and Blue Rangers. Their Dinozords can combine into the Megazord, the team's main answer to Rita's giant monsters.
From the start, the series alternates battles with the teenagers' everyday lives in Angel Grove. That structure means the team's identity does not depend only on its powers: they must balance friendship, school, personal responsibilities and the secret of being Rangers.
Season one: Rita Repulsa and the arrival of the Green Ranger
The first major arc changes the team's balance when Rita decides to create a Ranger of her own. She kidnaps Tommy Oliver, a young martial artist newly arrived in Angel Grove, places him under a spell and gives him the Dragon Power Coin. As the Green Ranger, Tommy infiltrates the Command Center, damages Alpha 5, cuts Zordon's connection to the Rangers and uses the Dragonzord against the team.
Jason confronts Tommy directly and destroys the Sword of Darkness, breaking Rita's spell. Free from the villain's control, Tommy chooses to join the Rangers. The Dragonzord begins fighting alongside the Dinozords and can take part in more powerful combinations, expanding the team's arsenal.
The gradual loss of the Green powers
The Green Ranger powers, however, remain tied to Rita's magic. She uses the Green Candle to drain them, and Tommy transfers the remaining energy to Jason to prevent Rita from reclaiming it. Later, Zordon manages to restore the Green powers temporarily, allowing Tommy to return to the team, but the energy remains unstable and is destined to run out.
Season two: Lord Zedd, Thunderzords and the White Ranger
The threat grows with the arrival of Lord Zedd, Rita's superior and an enemy capable of creating more powerful monsters. To face this new phase, Zordon transforms the Dinozords into Thunderzords. Jason commands the Red Dragon Thunderzord, and the five main Thunderzords can form the Thunder Megazord.
Tommy does not receive a Thunderzord because his Green powers are already weak. Zedd exploits that vulnerability and eventually causes the Green Ranger energy to disappear. The end of that power, however, does not end Tommy's role on the team.
Tommy becomes the White Ranger
Zordon and Alpha secretly work on a new power that does not depend on Rita's or Zedd's magic. Tommy returns as the White Ranger, receives Saba and the Tigerzord, and takes over as the team's field leader. The change permanently closes his Green Ranger phase and establishes his new position in the group.
Jason, Zack and Trini pass on their powers
The team's lineup changes again when Jason, Zack and Trini are selected to attend a World Peace Conference. Before leaving, the Rangers must obtain the Sword of Light, which is needed to transfer the powers safely. Rocky DeSantos becomes the new Red Ranger, Adam Park takes over as the Black Ranger and Aisha Campbell becomes the Yellow Ranger. Kimberly, Billy and Tommy remain.
In the same season, Rita returns, reclaims her place in the Moon Palace and joins forces with Lord Zedd. The two begin operating as a villainous pair, keeping the pressure on the Rangers.
Season three: Ninja powers and a new generation of Zords
In season three, Rito Revolto and other monsters manage to destroy the Thunderzords and the Tigerzord, leaving the team without its main arsenal. The Rangers seek Ninjor, who is connected to the origin of the Power Coins, and receive new Ninja Power Coins. They then gain the Ninjazords, which can form the Ninja Megazord, as well as the Falconzord.
Later, the team also gains the Shogunzords. This stage shows the Mighty Morphin team in its configuration farthest from the beginning: the mission remains the same, but the powers, vehicles and part of the cast have already been replaced.
Katherine replaces Kimberly as the Pink Ranger
Katherine Hillard arrives in Angel Grove while initially under one of Rita's spells. Manipulated by the villain, she steals Kimberly's Ninja Power Coin, putting the Pink Ranger in serious danger. Katherine manages to break Rita's control and returns the coin. Soon afterward, Kimberly decides to leave Angel Grove to train for an international gymnastics competition and chooses Katherine as her successor. Katherine then officially joins the team as the Pink Ranger.
The Zeo Crystal and the beginning of the end of the Mighty Morphin powers
Master Vile, Rita's father, enters the conflict in search of the Zeo Crystal, an extremely powerful energy source hidden beneath the Moon Palace. To keep the crystal from being used by evil, Tommy removes it and splits it into five pieces scattered across different points in time and space.
Master Vile still manages to reverse the ages of the Rangers and other Angel Grove residents, turning the heroes into children. Because they cannot use their powers normally in that condition, Zordon asks the Alien Rangers of Aquitar for help. They defend Earth while the young Rangers search for the fragments of the Zeo Crystal.
Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers and the transition to Power Rangers Zeo
During Mighty Morphin Alien Rangers, the Aquitian Rangers — Delphine, Aurico, Cestro, Corcus and Tideus — temporarily take over the defense of Angel Grove. Meanwhile, Tommy, Rocky, Adam, Katherine and Aisha, still children, undertake individual missions to recover the pieces of the Zeo Crystal. Billy manages to restore his age before the others and serves as technical support.
The search also causes a permanent change in the Yellow Ranger position: Aisha stays in Africa to help the animals of a local community and sends her Zeo Crystal fragment with Tanya Sloan, who returns to Angel Grove in her place.
When the Zeo Crystal is finally restored and the timeline returns to normal, the Rangers believe the crisis is over. However, Goldar and Rito destroy the Command Center. The explosion effectively closes the era of the Mighty Morphin powers. At the start of Power Rangers Zeo, the Zeo Crystal leads the survivors to the new Power Chamber, where Tommy, Adam, Rocky and Katherine receive Zeo powers; Tanya becomes the Yellow Ranger, while Billy chooses to remain as a technical adviser.

| Black | Zack Taylor | Adam Park takes over after the power transfer. |
| Yellow | Trini Kwan | Aisha Campbell takes over; later, the transition to Zeo introduces Tanya Sloan. |

| Blue | Billy Cranston | Remains the Blue Ranger throughout the Mighty Morphin era and later serves as technical support in Zeo. |
| Green/White | Tommy Oliver | Starts as Rita's controlled Green Ranger, becomes an ally, and later returns as the White Ranger and leader. |
How the Mighty Morphin team's story ends
The original Mighty Morphin story does not end with a final victory over Rita and Zedd, but with a transformation. The team survives member changes, the loss of Zords and Power Coins, age reversal and the destruction of the Command Center. The element that closes this cycle is the Zeo Crystal: it restores the timeline and provides the foundation for a new generation of powers.
In that sense, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers works as a long first phase of the classic continuity. Jason, Zack, Trini, Kimberly, Billy and Tommy form the initial core; Rocky, Adam, Aisha and Katherine keep the mission going; and the Alien Rangers phase serves as a direct bridge to Power Rangers Zeo.
