Spoiler warning: this guide revisits the ending of The Diplomat Season 3 and uses official material already released for Season 4.
The Diplomat Season 4 premieres on October 15, 2026. Its starting point is not just another international crisis: the Season 3 finale rearranges both of the show's central marriages while concentrating power in the hands of Grace Penn and Hal Wyler. Kate ends the season trying to save her marriage to Hal and, almost at the same moment, realizing that he may have joined the president in an operation that threatens the US-UK relationship.
There is an important update beyond the first teaser: on September 15, Netflix released a full Season 4 trailer. That material makes it easier to separate what was still suspicion at the end of Season 3 from what has already become an official premise of the new season.
Where Season 3 leaves Kate, Hal, Grace, and Todd
Grace Penn ends Season 3 as president of the United States, while Hal Wyler is vice president. Kate remains in London as the US ambassador to the United Kingdom, and Todd Penn is the first gentleman. That setup creates a foursome in which public office, marriage, and professional loyalty are constantly entangled.
The official Tudum explanation of the Season 3 ending describes the finale as a double rupture: Kate and Hal come apart as a couple at the same time that the relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom deteriorates. To understand the essentials before the premiere, four conflicts matter most.
1. Kate and Hal: reconciliation is interrupted by a political betrayal
For much of Season 3, Kate and Hal live through what creator Debora Cahn calls a “divorce of the heart”: they remain publicly married but function as a broken couple in private. Kate stays in London instead of following Hal to Washington and tries to build a life outside the dynamic that has defined them.
Near the end, however, Kate reconsiders. She apologizes to Hal and asks him to take her back. Hal agrees, and for a few minutes the finale suggests they might rebuild the relationship. The problem is that this reconciliation happens immediately before Kate realizes that Hal and Grace kept an operation involving the Poseidon weapon from her.
That is why Season 4 does not simply begin with “Kate and Hal are back together.” The official teaser shows Kate saying she is not trying to get out of the marriage but to get back into it. At the same time, she enters the new season knowing that Hal has built a professional partnership with Grace powerful enough to override both their marriage and Kate's diplomatic work.
2. Grace and Hal: the new power duo is the biggest internal risk to the foursome
Hal ends Season 3 as Grace's vice president. The change matters because he is no longer only the ambassador's politically restless husband; he now holds institutional power of his own. Grace, meanwhile, has already shown that she is willing to accept extreme decisions when she believes they protect strategic interests.
By the finale, Kate sees signs that the two worked together to remove the Poseidon weapon from the Russian submarine. When she confronts Hal with evidence of the operation, he asks her not to tell anyone and then rushes to warn Grace that Kate “knows.” The episode does not show a detailed confession to Kate, but it leaves their complicity at the center of the cliffhanger.
Season 4 promotional material goes one step further. The description of the September 15 trailer already frames Grace and Hal as responsible for stealing Russia's most powerful weapon, while Kate accuses the administration of carrying out a covert military incursion into an ally's territory. In other words, what was Kate's conclusion in Episode 8 is now being presented by Netflix as part of the new season's premise.
That does not confirm a romance between Grace and Hal. The material about the Season 3 finale emphasizes that Kate and Todd understand the connection as professional, and Debora Cahn describes the danger as the combination of two powerful people who feed each other's intensity without anyone “putting a foot on the brake.”
3. Kate and Todd: an alliance of convenience, not a confirmed romantic swap
Todd has a decisive function in the last episode because he is the one who puts into words what he and Kate are watching: Grace and Hal have formed an extremely productive working relationship. Kate is already suspicious about the Poseidon operation; Todd sees the bond between their spouses and helps make the foursome's new geometry explicit.
The official Season 4 teaser confirms that Kate and Todd join forces to try to contain the Grace-Hal alliance. Debora Cahn herself describes the season as two couples strapped into the same vehicle, with a kind of professional “change-partners” dynamic: Grace and Hal grow closer, pushing Kate and Todd into a not-very-functional partnership.
The full trailer adds a complication: Todd also encroaches on Kate's professional territory. So “Kate and Todd versus Grace and Hal” is a useful way to visualize the opening tension, but it should not be confused with a stable alliance or complete trust between them. The official material suggests tactical cooperation, not harmony.
4. Poseidon and the US-UK relationship: the marital conflict becomes an international crisis
The external threat connecting all of these conflicts is Poseidon, carried by a Russian submarine near the British coast. At the end of Season 3, Callum Ellis tells Kate that the Russians recovered the submarine, but the weapon is gone. Kate then reconstructs what happened: Grace had told Prime Minister Nicol Trowbridge that the US would send a drone to photograph the submarine, but the operation involved a vessel large enough to carry Poseidon.
For Kate, a secret US removal of the weapon could be interpreted by the British government as an act of war. That strikes directly at the work she had been doing to rebuild trust between Washington and London. The Season 4 trailer confirms that the relationship between the two countries remains under threat and shows Kate treating the operation as a covert military incursion into allied territory.
The important point is that the series turns a problem in Kate's marriage into a diplomatic problem: if Hal lied to her as a husband and political partner, the consequences do not stay inside the relationship. A decision made by Hal and Grace can weaken Kate's position with the British government and widen the international crisis.
Who knows what at the end of Season 3?
| Character | What they know or perceive | What the episode still leaves unresolved |
|---|---|---|
| Kate | She knows Poseidon is missing, gathers evidence that Grace lied about the operation, and concludes that Hal and Grace acted together. | She does not receive a full explanation of how the weapon was removed or what the next step is. |
| Hal | He has direct knowledge of the operation and responds to Kate's investigation by asking for silence; he then tells Grace that Kate knows. | The episode does not detail every stage of the operation or the duo's ultimate objective for the audience. |
| Grace | She is aligned with Hal in the operation Kate uncovers and is warned by him that the ambassador has reached the truth. | Season 3 does not reveal an on-screen complete plan for the use or final destination of Poseidon. |
| Todd | He recognizes the professional closeness between Grace and Hal and draws Kate's attention to the strength of that partnership. | The finale does not establish that Todd knows every detail of Poseidon's disappearance. |
What Season 4 already confirms — and what is still inference
The official material resolves some questions without getting ahead of events Netflix has not yet revealed.
- Confirmed: Season 4 premieres on October 15, 2026.
- Confirmed: Kate, Hal, Grace, and Todd form the structural core of the new season.
- Confirmed: Kate is still trying to recover her marriage with Hal, even as his partnership with Grace cuts through the relationship.
- Confirmed: Kate and Todd form an unlikely alliance to contain Grace and Hal.
- Confirmed by the newest promotional material: Grace and Hal's operation involving the Russian weapon is no longer framed only as Kate's suspicion and is presented as a starting fact of the season.
- Confirmed: Todd also creates friction in Kate's professional sphere, limiting the idea that the two will form a perfectly united front.
On the other hand, it would still be inference to claim that Grace and Hal will have a romantic affair, that Kate and Todd will become a couple, that Poseidon will actually be used, or that the crisis will necessarily lead to war. There is also no basis, before the premiere, to conclude whether Kate and Hal will rebuild the marriage or break for good.
What to remember before October 15
The essentials are these: Kate and Hal emotionally reconcile at the end of Season 3, but that reconciliation is hit by the discovery of Hal's secret operation with Grace. Grace and Hal enter Season 4 as president and vice president — and as a more powerful political duo than before. Todd recognizes the bond between them and begins cooperating with Kate, although that partnership also comes with friction. And Poseidon's disappearance turns the foursome's marital realignment into a direct threat to the relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom.
That is the safest starting point for the premiere: distinguish what Episode 8 leaves as Kate's discovery from what the teaser and the full trailer now officially confirm for Season 4.
