Real Madrid beat Santiago Wanderers 3-1 on Saturday, September 19, 2026, to win the Under-20 Intercontinental Cup for the first time. The final at the Santiago Bernabéu drew 52,117 spectators, the largest attendance ever recorded in the competition, and ended with two late Madrid goals after a match marked by three dismissals for the Chilean side and a saved penalty.

The result also carried historical significance beyond the trophy. It was the first Under-20 Intercontinental Cup played in Europe, Real Madrid became the first Spanish club to win it, and the team became only the second European representative to lift the trophy after Benfica in 2022.

How Real Madrid 3-1 Santiago Wanderers unfolded

Real Madrid began with more possession and tried to push Santiago Wanderers back toward their own penalty area. The first decisive change came in the 25th minute, when Alexander Dubó was shown a straight red card for a foul on Daniel Yáñez.

Four minutes later, Yáñez took the resulting free kick from the right and sent a direct effort through the area and into the far corner beyond Fabiano Avello. The goal put Madrid ahead, but Wanderers reorganized defensively and reached halftime only 1-0 down.

Despite playing with ten men, the South American champions responded early in the second half. In the 49th minute, Christian Silva dispossessed Mario Rivas and finished to equalize. From that point, the match became more open: Madrid kept attacking while Wanderers looked for transitions and forced Javi Navarro into action.

Santamaría changed the match late on

The decisive swing began in the 80th minute, when Fran Santamaría replaced Jorge Cestero. One minute later, Jesús Fortea advanced and delivered a low cross into the six-yard box. Santamaría arrived to finish and make it 2-1.

Santiago Wanderers ended the match with an even greater numerical disadvantage. Nicolás Valenzuela received a second yellow card in the 87th minute, reducing the team to nine players. In added time, Santamaría was fouled inside the box. Yáñez took the penalty, but Avello saved it at 90+5.

Shortly afterward, Nicolás Carvacho was also sent off. With Wanderers down to eight players, Madrid found space for one final attack. At 90+9, Fortea supplied his second assist of the night and Roberto Martín finished to seal the 3-1 score with the final touch of the game.

The key moments of the final

  • 25 minutes: Alexander Dubó is sent off for Santiago Wanderers.
  • 29 minutes: Daniel Yáñez scores from the free kick to put Real Madrid 1-0 up.
  • 49 minutes: Christian Silva equalizes for the Chilean side.
  • 81 minutes: Fran Santamaría, just introduced, scores to make it 2-1.
  • 87 minutes: Valenzuela receives a second yellow and is sent off.
  • 90+5: Avello saves Yáñez's penalty.
  • 90+6: Carvacho is shown a red card.
  • 90+9: Roberto Martín makes it 3-1 with the final action.

Why the 52,117 attendance is a record

The crowd of 52,117 at the Bernabéu surpassed every one of the competition's previous four editions. The former record belonged to the 2025 final between Flamengo and Barcelona, which drew 45,656 spectators at the Maracanã.

The figure is even more notable because the 2026 edition was the first played on European soil. The first four took place in South America: Montevideo in 2022, Buenos Aires in 2023, and Rio de Janeiro in 2024 and 2025.

What the title means for Real Madrid and Spain

For Real Madrid, this is the first Under-20 Intercontinental Cup in club history. The team entered the final as the 2025/26 UEFA Youth League champion and completed its international youth campaign with another trophy. According to Real Madrid, the youth side finished 2026 with four titles: the Under-20 Intercontinental Cup, the Youth League, the league title and the Champions Cup.

For Spanish football, the result also broke new ground. Barcelona had finished runner-up in 2025, but no Spanish team had previously won the competition. Real Madrid therefore became the first representative from Spain to claim the trophy.

From a continental perspective, Madrid are only the second European champions in five editions. Benfica won the inaugural event in 2022, followed by Boca Juniors in 2023 and Flamengo in 2024 and 2025.

How the Under-20 Intercontinental Cup works

The competition brings together the UEFA Youth League winner and the CONMEBOL Copa Libertadores Sub-20 champion. It was created as part of the cooperation between UEFA and CONMEBOL and is decided in a single match.

There is no extra time. If the score is level after 90 minutes, the champion is decided directly by a penalty shootout. In 2026, Real Madrid qualified as Europe's youth champion, while Santiago Wanderers arrived after winning the Libertadores Sub-20 and becoming the first Chilean club to claim that competition.

A title decided after a competitive contest

The 3-1 scoreline may suggest a comfortable win, but the sequence of events tells a different story. Wanderers equalized while already down to ten men and stayed in contention until the closing stages. Madrid built the final margin only after Santamaría came on, further dismissals reduced the Chilean side, and Roberto Martín scored on the final attack.

UEFA's official match report lists the key moments, lineups and roll of honour. The competition page explains the format and previous editions, while Real Madrid records the trophy as the club's first in the tournament.
