The 2026 Singapore Grand Prix is scheduled for October 9–11 at the Marina Bay Street Circuit and, for the first time, the event will feature an F1 Sprint. The biggest change affects Friday and Saturday: the usual three-practice structure is replaced by a weekend with only one practice session before the first competitive session.

For anyone planning the weekend, the order is straightforward: Free Practice 1 and Sprint Qualifying on Friday; Sprint and Grand Prix Qualifying on Saturday; the race on Sunday. Formula 1, the FIA and the Singapore GP organizer have confirmed Singapore as one of six Sprint events in 2026 and published the event timetable.

2026 Singapore GP: dates and session times

The table below uses Singapore local time (SGT, UTC+8) as published by the event organizer and also converts it to Brasília time (UTC-3). The difference is 11 hours.

What changes with Marina Bay’s first Sprint

Singapore makes its Sprint-calendar debut in 2026. The FIA and Formula 1 announced that Marina Bay, Montréal and Zandvoort would host the format for the first time that season, joining Shanghai, Miami and Silverstone. For Singapore, the practical effect is not a different Sunday race, but a reorganized route to it.

Friday has only one practice before positions are at stake

On a conventional weekend, Friday normally includes two free-practice sessions. In Singapore in 2026, the second practice is replaced by Sprint Qualifying. That means that after FP1, drivers and teams move directly into a session that decides starting positions for the Sprint.

In practical terms, the time available to understand the car and refine the setup before the first battle for position is concentrated into one hour. The Singapore GP organizer itself notes that Sprint Qualifying replaces FP2 and that the Sprint takes the slot that would normally be used by FP3.

Saturday’s Sprint does not set the Grand Prix grid

This is the key distinction. Friday’s Sprint Qualifying sets only the Sprint grid. After the Sprint on Saturday, there is a separate Qualifying session at 21:00 local time that determines the grid for Sunday’s race.

So a good or bad Sprint finish does not remove the need to qualify again for the Grand Prix. The short race has its own result and points, while traditional Qualifying remains the reference for Sunday’s starting order.

Points are available before the main race

The Sprint is a race of roughly 100 km and, according to Formula 1’s official guide, there is no mandatory pit stop. The top eight score points: 8 for the winner, then 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2 and 1. As a result, Saturday in Singapore now contains two important competitive sessions: a points-paying race and, hours later, Grand Prix Qualifying.

For championship followers, this creates a clear difference from previous Marina Bay editions: the weekend standings can begin to change before Sunday.

How to follow the weekend without mixing up the sessions

  • Friday: FP1 is the only practice window; Sprint Qualifying sets the grid for the short race.
  • Saturday: the Sprint awards points; later, Qualifying creates a new grid, this time for the Grand Prix.
  • Sunday: the main race still closes the weekend, starting at 20:00 in Singapore and 09:00 in Brasília.

If you want to prioritize the sessions that explain the whole weekend, the sequence is Sprint Qualifying → Sprint → Qualifying → Grand Prix. FP1 is especially useful for understanding how teams reach the first competitive session with less preparation time.

What does not change at the Singapore Grand Prix

The Sprint debut does not turn the main event into a short race, and the Sprint result is not used as Sunday’s grid. The Grand Prix remains scheduled for Sunday night at Marina Bay. Formula 1’s official page lists the circuit at 4.927 km, with 62 laps and a race distance of 305.337 km.

It also remains a street and night event, a defining feature of Singapore since its debut in 2008. The new element in 2026 is the concentration of competitive action across all three days, with less free practice and an additional race on Saturday.
