First time on Ilha do Mel: Pontal do Sul or Paranaguá? Encantadas or Nova Brasília?

Compare Ilha do Mel’s two mainland departure points and two main arrival piers to choose the route that best matches your accommodation, available time and priority attractions.

For a first trip to Ilha do Mel, the simplest combination in most cases is to board at Pontal do Sul and get off at the pier closest to your accommodation. Pontal do Sul is usually the more practical gateway because the regular crossing takes about 30 minutes; from Paranaguá, the Paraná state government gives a travel time of about 1 hour 30 minutes. Between Encantadas and Nova Brasília, the question is not “which village is better,” but which one cuts unnecessary walking with luggage and places you closer to what you want to do.

For itinerary purposes, Encantadas suits travelers who want to stay close to Gruta das Encantadas and focus on the southern part of the island. Nova Brasília is more convenient for Farol das Conchas, Praia Grande and access toward Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres. Cars do not circulate on the island, and getting around is mainly on foot, by bicycle or, on some routes, by boat. Choosing the wrong arrival pier can therefore turn an easy arrival into a long walk with bags.

Quick answer: which combination should you choose?

Pontal do Sul or Paranaguá: the main differences are time and frequency

The Paraná state government’s official Ilha do Mel service page gives an approximate crossing time of 30 minutes from Pontal do Sul and about 1 hour 30 minutes from Paranaguá. From either point, travelers can use scheduled boats or authorized water taxis.

That difference matters on a short trip. If you are arriving by car or bus through Pontal do Paraná and want to maximize time on the island, Pontal do Sul is generally more efficient. It is also the hub for the more frequent scheduled service. When checked on August 31, 2026, Abaline listed Pontal do Sul departures roughly hourly through much of the weekday operation and every 30 minutes on weekends within the published operating windows.

Paranaguá remains a valid option, but it needs more planning. In the same check, Abaline showed a much more limited regular Paranaguá–Ilha do Mel schedule than the Pontal do Sul service. High-season and special-date schedules can change, so confirm the current timetable directly with the operator before traveling.

When Paranaguá is a good choice

  • you are already staying in Paranaguá or want to visit the historic center before or after the island;
  • you are comfortable with a longer boat ride;
  • the available departure fits your arrival and return plans;
  • you prefer not to travel overland to Pontal do Sul.

When Pontal do Sul is clearly more convenient

  • it is your first visit and you want to reduce logistics;
  • you are making a day trip or staying only one or two nights;
  • you are coming from Curitiba or the coast on a route that already passes through Pontal do Paraná;
  • you want more possible departure times during the day;
  • you have luggage and want to reduce total travel time.

Encantadas or Nova Brasília: choose according to accommodation and attractions

Ilha do Mel has two main tourist arrival piers: Encantadas and Nova Brasília. The choice matters because, according to the Instituto Água e Terra, movement on the island is essentially on foot or by bicycle. There is no practical “get off anywhere and call a car” option.

Encantadas: best for the cave and a southern itinerary

The key landmark is Gruta das Encantadas. The Paraná government states that it is reached by a trail of about 600 meters from the Encantadas pier. If your pousada is in this community or the cave is the focus of a short visit, arriving at Encantadas avoids unnecessary transfers at the start of the trip.

Encantadas also works well for a compact plan: arrive, leave your backpack at the accommodation, walk to the beaches and cave, and spend the night without needing to cross the island. On a short weekend, that logistical consistency is often more valuable than trying to “see everything.”

Nova Brasília: best for the lighthouse, Praia Grande and the fortress

Nova Brasília is the more logical base for the central and northern sectors. The local planning guide Visite a Ilha do Mel links Nova Brasília arrivals with routes to Farol das Conchas and the fortress. The Paraná government also says Fortaleza de Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres is about 4 km by trail from the Brasília pier.

Farol das Conchas, built in 1872, is reached by trail followed by a 150-step stairway, according to the official tourism portal Viaje Paraná. If these attractions are your priority, Nova Brasília prevents the classic mistake of arriving in the south and beginning the trip with a long cross-island transfer.

“My accommodation just says Ilha do Mel”: what should you do?

Before buying the boat ticket, confirm with the property which community it is in and which pier you should use. “Ilha do Mel” in the address is not enough information to choose the arrival point.

  1. Look for Encantadas, Brasília, Farol, Praia Grande or Fortaleza in the address.
  2. If it is unclear, ask directly: “Should I get off at Encantadas or Nova Brasília?”
  3. Buy the ticket for the pier indicated by the accommodation.
  4. Travel light: part of the route to the property may be over sand or trail.

This simple check matters more than choosing a village based only on photos or reviews. On arrival, the priority is to avoid carrying luggage over a distance that could have been eliminated by choosing the correct pier.

Can you stay in one village and visit the other?

Yes. The sectors can be connected by walking routes/trails, and water-transfer services also operate between Encantadas and Nova Brasília. But the fact that you can move between them does not make the accommodation location irrelevant. On a one- or two-day trip, every extra transfer takes a meaningful chunk of your available time.

If you want to see both sides, a better strategy is to sleep near your main interest and schedule one specific transfer to the other sector instead of crossing the island at the start and end of every day. Travelers who want to minimize long walks, or those with children or luggage, can price an authorized water taxi in advance.

Three practical first-trip scenarios

1. Day trip focused on the cave

Pontal do Sul → Encantadas. The shorter crossing preserves more usable time on the island, and the arrival point places you close to the cave. It is the most coherent combination for a no-overnight itinerary concentrated in the south.

2. Weekend with lighthouse and fortress

Pontal do Sul → Nova Brasília. Stay in the Brasília/Farol sector and split the lighthouse, nearby beaches and fortress across the stay. The advantage is avoiding repeated long walks with your backpack.

3. Paranaguá + Ilha do Mel in the same trip

Paranaguá → the pier closest to your accommodation. This makes sense when Paranaguá is an actual part of the itinerary rather than just a transit point. Because the crossing is longer and the regular schedule can be limited, build the day around the boat time, not the other way around.

What to check the day before

  • Boat timetable: check Abaline and, if needed, confirm directly because schedules can vary by season, demand and navigation conditions.
  • Correct pier: verify it with your accommodation before buying the ticket.
  • Weather: wind and sea conditions can affect operations.
  • Luggage: favor a backpack or light bag; this is not a door-to-door motorized destination.
  • Environmental and visitor rules: check the IAT before traveling, since access procedures can be updated.

Final decision

For most first-time visitors, Pontal do Sul is the easiest departure point to fit into a trip because of the shorter crossing and more frequent regular operation. From there, the arrival choice is straightforward: Encantadas if your accommodation and plans are in the south, especially around the cave; Nova Brasília if you want the lighthouse, Praia Grande, the fortress, or are staying in that sector.

The mistake to avoid is treating the two island piers like interchangeable stops in a town with urban transport. On Ilha do Mel, distance becomes walking time. The best choice is the one that puts you at the right pier from the moment you arrive.
