Transferring a Netflix profile and inviting an extra member are related operations, but they are not the same. A profile transfer moves an existing profile to another account, an existing account, or an eligible extra-member slot. An extra member, meanwhile, gets a separate account with their own login and profile, paid for by the main account owner. In either case, confirm the destination before completing the change.
What moves with a transferred profile
According to the Netflix Help Center, a profile transfer can carry recommendations, viewing history, My List, saved games, settings, and other profile-related data. This helps avoid starting over, but it does not mean every feature of the source account is copied, because the plan, billing, and account structure belong to the account rather than the profile.
| Destination | What happens to the profile | Key point |
|---|---|---|
| New account | An eligible profile can be transferred with its associated data. | The new account has its own subscription and payment method. |
| Existing account | The profile can be moved to an existing account when the option is available and requirements are met. | Check the destination account before confirming. |
| Extra-member slot | An existing profile can be offered to the extra member during setup. | If the extra member accepts the transferred profile, it is removed from the main account. If they decline and create a new profile, the original remains. |
Which profiles can be transferred
Netflix says the profile must be on an active account. Kids profiles cannot be transferred. A PIN-protected profile must have the PIN removed before transfer, and a profile with an attached email address must also have that email removed. Profiles already in an extra-member account cannot be transferred. There is an additional restriction for an extra-member destination: the Primary Profile cannot be transferred to an extra-member account.
Transfers to an extra member have specific rules
When purchasing an extra-member slot, the account owner can choose to transfer a current profile or let the person create a new one. Netflix says a profile cannot be transferred in this setup if there is only one profile on the account or if the extra member has previously had an account. Kids profiles, PIN-protected profiles, and the Primary Profile also cannot be transferred to the extra member.
If the person accepts the offered profile, the existing profile is removed from the main account. If they choose to create a new profile instead, the offered profile stays on the main account. This distinction matters when the goal is to preserve access to the original profile.
What changes when someone becomes an extra member
An extra member creates a separate account with their own email, password, and one non-Kids profile. The main account owner pays for the slot and manages adding or removing the extra member. The invited person generally must be in the same country where the account owner started the membership. Device, download, quality, and advertising limits depend on the type of extra-member slot and plan conditions.
How to avoid losing the profile you expected
- Confirm that the profile is eligible and remove a PIN or attached email when required.
- Check whether the destination is a new account, an existing account, or an extra-member slot.
- For an extra member, confirm whether the person intends to accept the transferred profile or create a new one.
- After activation, sign in to the destination account and check viewing history, My List, recommendations, saved games, and relevant settings.
Rules can vary by country, plan, billing method, and feature availability. For current conditions, see Netflix's official pages on profile transfers and extra members.
