Nintendo Switch Sports Resort launches for Nintendo Switch 2 on October 22, 2026 with 12 sports, but the main difference from a simple minigame collection is the role of Wuhu Island. Nintendo confirms that the island can be freely explored, with leisure activities, sightseeing spots, collectibles, and routes across land, sea, and air. At the same time, the game keeps a traditional competitive structure with local and online matches, plus the new offline Island Crown mode.
In practice, the game combines three layers: competitive sports, leisure sports that also work as exploration tools, and progression through challenges and rewards. Nintendo has not presented Wuhu Island as an “open world” in the sense of an adventure game; the official material describes freedom to move around the island and look for activities inside a sports resort.
What are the 12 sports in Nintendo Switch Sports Resort?
The official list has nine activities centered on competition and three called Leisure Sports, which also let players travel around Wuhu Island. All of them use Joy-Con 2 motion controls, but some have their own specific control schemes.
| Sport | Control type / concept | Confirmed modes and variations |
|---|---|---|
| Boxing | Punching, guarding, and counterpunching motions | Bouts with a knockout objective |
| Table Tennis | Racket motions and shot selection | Normal matches and Return Challenge |
| Archery | Joy-Con 2 used like a bow, with aiming and wind adjustment | Standard rules and special rules with separate target sections |
| Tennis | Racket motions and multiple shot types | Normal matches and Laid-Back Match with a larger, slower ball |
| Volleyball | Motion controls for bumping, setting, and spiking | Matches and Bump to the Beat |
| Bowling | Rolling motion with the ability to add spin | Special obstacle lanes and 100-Pin Game |
| Basketball | Motions for dribbling, passing, and shooting | Three-Point Contest, Three-Point Challenge, and Five-Streak Battle |
| Golf | Swing motion with Joy-Con 2 | Rounds of 3, 9, or 18 holes |
| Thumb Wrestling | A contest based on thumb movement | Duels in which players try to pin the opponent’s thumb |
| Skateboarding | Joy-Con 2 mouse controls | Sightseeing Tour, Skate Sprint, and Free Play |
| Power Cruising | Joy-Con 2 held like handlebars to ride over the water | Sightseeing Tour, Sea Sprint, and Free Play |
| Prop Plane | Tilt the controller to fly | Sightseeing Tour, Ball Battle, and Free Play |
Nintendo also confirms Jump Rope as a warm-up activity. It is not included in the official list of 12 sports, so it should be understood as an extra exercise rather than a thirteenth sport.
How does free exploration of Wuhu Island work?
Exploration is not limited to choosing an arena from a menu. Nintendo says players can freely explore Wuhu Island, chase dolphins in the ocean, search for hidden hibiscus flowers, and collect Spocco Photos, which provide information about sightseeing spots around the resort.
The three Leisure Sports are the main link between sports and exploration. In Skateboarding, players travel across land; in Power Cruising, they move through the water; and in Prop Plane, they fly over the island. All three have Free Play plus sightseeing tours tied to Spocco Photos. This creates activity- and collectible-driven exploration rather than an announced adventure campaign with story missions.
The official material also connects Wuhu Island with a variety of sports facilities and activities. The resort therefore works as a connective space: some experiences are competitive matches, while others use the environment itself as the course.
What is Island Crown mode?
Island Crown is an offline mode focused on competitive progression. According to Nintendo, players rise through the ranks in each sport to face Island Champions and then Island Legends. The idea is to provide a long-term goal without relying on online opponents.
Nintendo has not yet detailed how many divisions there are, how many Champions or Legends each sport contains, or whether every variation of every sport is part of this path. What is confirmed is the broad structure — ranking up and challenging special rivals — not the exact size of the offline campaign.
Online, offline, and Leisure: how do the modes fit together?
- Local matches: players can gather around the same TV; Nintendo’s official store lists support for 1 to 4 players on one console, although additional accessories may be required depending on the sport.
- Online Pro League: a ranked mode where players begin at E and face people of a similar level to climb the league.
- Casual Online Play: online matches where wins and losses are not recorded, for players who do not want ranked progression.
- Island Crown: offline progression against Island Champions and Island Legends.
- Leisure Sports: Skateboarding, Power Cruising, and Prop Plane combine dedicated challenges, sightseeing, and Free Play for island exploration.
Nintendo states that online features require a Nintendo Switch Online membership and a Nintendo Account. Island Crown, meanwhile, has been explicitly announced as offline.
How do Spocco Points and customization progression work?
Another important change is that playing any sport in any mode earns Spocco Points. Those points can be exchanged for customization options for a Mii or Sportsmate. This links competitive matches, offline play, and leisure activities to the same reward progression.
The key point is that Nintendo does not limit earning these points to online play. Players who prefer Island Crown, local matches, or exploration can still participate in the customization system. The company has not yet published a complete item catalog or point-earning rates.
What is confirmed — and what is still unknown?
Ahead of launch, the overall structure is fairly clear: there are 12 sports; three of them also serve as ways to explore Wuhu Island; those Leisure Sports include Free Play and sightseeing; Island Crown provides offline progression; Pro League and Casual Online Play cover online competition; and Spocco Points unify cosmetic progression.
Details are still missing about the full scope of exploration, the number of Spocco Photos and hibiscus flowers, the number of Island Crown challenges, rule differences across every sport in offline and online play, and the pace of cosmetic unlocks. Those points should not be treated as confirmed until Nintendo provides more information.
What to expect on October 22
The announced content places Nintendo Switch Sports Resort between a motion-controlled sports game and an explorable resort. Players looking for quick matches will have traditional activities such as bowling, tennis, golf, and volleyball; solo players will have Island Crown goals; and players who prefer sightseeing can use a skateboard, watercraft, and plane to search Wuhu Island for landmarks and collectibles.
