Power Rangers Turbo is the fifth television season of Power Rangers and follows a decisive transition within the Zordon Era. The story begins immediately after the events of Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie, when the heroes leave their Zeo powers behind and begin using vehicle-based Turbo powers and Zords. The season aired in the United States in 1997 and consists of 45 episodes.
How the story of Power Rangers Turbo begins
The starting point is Turbo: A Power Rangers Movie. Divatox, a space pirate, tries to free Maligore and comes into conflict with the Rangers. To stop her, Zordon and Alpha 5 give new Turbo powers to Tommy Oliver, Adam Park, Tanya Sloan, and Katherine "Kat" Hillard. Rocky DeSantos, who was expected to continue as the Blue Ranger, is injured and replaced by Justin Stewart, a boy who discovers the Rangers' identities and receives the Blue Turbo power.
After Maligore is defeated, Divatox continues her revenge in the television series. The season's first lineup therefore consists of Tommy as the Red Turbo Ranger, Justin as Blue, Adam as Green, Tanya as Yellow, and Kat as Pink. The team's central concept now combines superheroes, speed, automotive technology, and the Turbozords, which combine to form the Turbo Megazord.
Divatox becomes the main enemy in Angel Grove
Divatox establishes an underwater base and repeatedly attacks Angel Grove with the help of Rygog, Elgar, Porto, and the Piranhatrons. In many episodes, she uses monsters and detonators to destroy locations around the city or force the Rangers to split their attention. The episodic structure keeps the franchise's classic formula, but the season also develops a larger story about changing leadership, new allies, and a growing cosmic threat.
Another major change occurs early in the season. Zordon and Alpha 5 leave Earth and return to Eltar. Dimitria, a mentor from Inquiris, takes over as the Rangers' guide, accompanied by Alpha 6. Zordon's departure does not end his importance to the story. Instead, it prepares the ground for events that become central to the season finale.
Blue Senturion and signs of a larger threat
During the first half of the season, the Rangers meet the Blue Senturion, a robotic police officer from the future. He arrives carrying a message about a future alliance of major evil forces. Divatox interferes with the transmission, but the story begins to suggest that the conflicts in Angel Grove are part of something much bigger than her weekly attacks.
The Blue Senturion becomes a recurring ally and reinforces the idea that Earth is connected to an interplanetary war. This narrative setup matters because the ending of Turbo leaves the relative safety of Angel Grove behind and leads directly into the space adventure of the following season.
The team transition in Passing the Torch
The biggest turning point in Power Rangers Turbo occurs in the two-part episode Passing the Torch. Tommy, Adam, Tanya, and Kat are ready to move into new stages of their lives and must choose successors capable of continuing the mission. Justin remains the Blue Ranger while the other four powers change hands.
| Color | First lineup | New lineup |
|---|---|---|
| Red | Tommy Oliver | T.J. Johnson |
| Blue | Justin Stewart | Justin Stewart |
| Green | Adam Park | Carlos Vallerte |
| Yellow | Tanya Sloan | Ashley Hammond |
| Pink | Katherine "Kat" Hillard | Cassie Chan |
T.J. and Cassie prove themselves when they help rescue Tommy during one of Divatox's attacks. Carlos and Ashley also show courage while protecting civilians. The veterans then transfer their powers to T.J., Carlos, Ashley, and Cassie. From that point on, T.J. takes over as the Red Ranger and team leader, Carlos becomes Green, Ashley becomes Yellow, and Cassie becomes Pink.
The change is more than a cast replacement. It closes the regular run of Tommy, Adam, Tanya, and Kat as the main Ranger team of the Zordon Era and puts four relatively new characters at the center of the series. Justin serves as the bridge between both lineups because he keeps the Blue Turbo power for the entire season.
The Phantom Ranger and new allies
After the team transition, the mysterious Phantom Ranger appears. His identity is not revealed in Turbo, but he helps the Rangers at crucial moments and develops a special connection with Cassie. His presence expands the season's space-oriented side and introduces important resources for the second lineup.
The team also gains vehicle allies such as Lightning Cruiser and Storm Blaster, strengthening the automotive theme even further. These elements make it clear that the Rangers' strength no longer depends only on the Turbo Megazord and that new solutions will be needed as Divatox raises the stakes.
General Havoc steals the Turbo Megazord
The conflict escalates when General Havoc, Divatox's brother, arrives with the powerful Metallosaurus. He manages to defeat the Rangers and capture the Turbo Megazord, leaving the team at a major disadvantage. This is one of the moments when the season breaks away from the routine of defeating a monster and returning to normal because the heroes temporarily lose their main giant combat resource.
The Phantom Ranger responds by giving the Rangers the Rescuezords. With them, the team forms the Rescue Megazord and is able to fight the Metallosaurus while also recovering the Turbo Megazord. From then on, the Rangers have two major Zord systems, increasing their power but also setting up the losses that will define the finale.
Dark Specter, Eltar, and the crisis that changes everything
Near the end of the season, the story stops treating Divatox as an isolated threat. The Rangers learn that Eltar is under attack and that Zordon has been captured by Dark Specter's forces. Dimitria and the Blue Senturion leave for Eltar to help, reducing the support available to the team on Earth.
Divatox then unleashes Goldgoyle, an enemy strong enough to overcome both of the Rangers' main Megazords. The Rescue Megazord is sacrificed in an attempt to destroy the monster, and the Turbo Megazord is also lost. The Rangers eventually defeat Goldgoyle with their remaining resources, but they finish the battle without their primary Zords.
The ending of Power Rangers Turbo in Chase Into Space
The two-part episode Chase Into Space ends the season with one of the Rangers' biggest defeats up to that point. Divatox finally discovers the location of the Power Chamber. Her Piranhatrons and monsters invade the base, overwhelm the Rangers, and destroy their headquarters. With the Power Chamber in ruins, the team also loses the structure that supported their lives as the Power Rangers Turbo.
Divatox appears to have won, but she receives a summons connected to Dark Specter and Zordon's capture. She leaves Earth to join the larger forces of evil. T.J., Carlos, Ashley, and Cassie realize they cannot simply remain in Angel Grove while Zordon is in danger. Even without their Turbo powers and Zords, they decide to follow her.
Justin makes a different choice. His father becomes part of his life again, and Justin decides to stay on Earth with him. The Turbo lineup therefore splits apart: Justin ends his regular journey as the Blue Ranger, while T.J., Carlos, Ashley, and Cassie go to NASADA, board a space shuttle, and launch into space.
How Turbo connects to Power Rangers in Space
The finale does not resolve the conflict with Dark Specter or Zordon's fate. Instead, it works as a direct bridge into Power Rangers in Space. The four former Turbo Rangers reach space without their old powers and meet Andros, the Red Space Ranger. From that encounter, they receive a new team identity and continue the mission that began in Turbo.
For that reason, the story of Power Rangers Turbo can be divided into three major phases. First, the veteran team receives vehicle-based powers and battles Divatox. Next, the powers pass to T.J., Carlos, Ashley, and Cassie, with Justin remaining as the link between generations. Finally, the team suffers increasingly serious losses, loses its Zords, sees the Power Chamber destroyed, and leaves Earth to try to save Zordon.
The result is a season built around transition. It begins closely connected to Tommy Oliver's era and the familiar elements of the Zordon Era, but ends with a new team, no base, and no powers, traveling beyond Earth. That ending turns the defeat against Divatox into the starting point for the larger scale of Power Rangers in Space.
