GPT-5.6 Sol was updated on ChatGPT and Luna reaches more free users: what changed and what didn't change

OpenAI has updated GPT-5.6 Sol for Plus and Pro and will extend GPT-5.6 Luna in Free and Go. See what changes, when it arrives, and what limits remain.

OpenAI announced on August 6, 2026 an update to GPT-5.6 Sol within ChatGPT and a major expansion of access to GPT-5.6 Luna. For Plus and Pro subscribers, the focus is on more direct answers, greater factual reliability, and new control over reasoning effort. For Free and Go users, Luna takes on the role of default template, accompanied by an expanded use of text and a new Think button.

The point that deserves attention is that this announcement does not represent the launch of the GPT-5.6 family. Sol, Terra and Luna had already been introduced for general availability on July 9th. The news for August is mainly in how Sol works in ChatGPT and who now has access to Luna in the standard chat.

What changed in GPT-5.6 Sol

For Plus and Pro users, OpenAI says it has adjusted GPT-5.6 Sol to respond in a more focused way, better adapt the level of detail to the request and avoid unnecessary formatting or explanations. The company also states that the model should counter or correct the user when simply agreeing is not the most helpful response.

Another visible change is a control that allows you to choose how much reasoning effort ChatGPT should apply to the response. The proposal is to use less processing on simple questions and increase the level for tasks such as research, planning, writing, programming or more complex decisions. The feature was announced for web, mobile and desktop apps.

OpenAI also presented its own data on factuality. In an internal assessment with financial, medical, and legal questions that required factual detail, responses containing at least one error would have been about 68% less frequent with GPT-5.6 Sol than with GPT-5.5 Instant. For Luna, the reported reduction was approximately 62%.

These numbers do not equate to an independent test of the model nor do they allow us to conclude that factual errors fell to this extent in any type of conversation. These are the results of an internal evaluation, with a specific section released by OpenAI itself.

What changes for those who use ChatGPT Free

The switch to free users happens in stages. In the August 6 announcement, OpenAI reported that GPT-5.6 Luna would become the default model for the Free and Go plans during that week, that is, in the period from August 3 to 9, 2026. This means that the change may not have appeared simultaneously in all accounts.

The second stage begins the week following the announcement. According to the company, Free and Go will receive unlimited text chats with Luna and a new Think button, which allows you to dedicate more thought to a difficult question. The Help Center clarifies an important detail: Think about these plans continues to use GPT-5.6 Luna, not GPT-5.6 Sol.

“Unlimited”, in this case, also needs to be read within the advertised scope. OpenAI says that text chats will be without the conventional limit, subject to anti-abuse mechanisms. File uploads, generation or use of images and other tools will continue to be subject to their own limits.

Sol and Luna after the announcement

Main change of August 6th ChatGPT behavior update and new reasoning control Expansion as default model for Free and Go

Additional reasoning Effort control for eligible users Think Button, using Luna itself
Unlimited text chats It was not the news announced for Sol Announced for Free and Go starting next week
Free user access to the Sun No Free continues using Luna

The separation is important because scaling Luna doesn't mean OpenAI is giving away the Sun for free. The Help Center explicitly states that Free and Go do not have access to GPT-5.6 Sol in standard ChatGPT conversations.

What hasn't changed in this update

The August 6th update targeted the Chat experience on ChatGPT. OpenAI reported that the existing versions and availability of GPT-5.6 in Work and Codex have not been changed by this release. In particular, the version of Sol used in these products did not receive the same update announced for everyday ChatGPT conversations.

There was also no announcement that limits on files, images and other tools would be removed from the Free and Go plans. The benefit of unlimited use cited by the company refers to text chats and remains subject to abuse protections.

And Sol and Luna, as models, were not born in this update. The GPT-5.6 family was previously available. What has changed now is the configuration of the experience within ChatGPT and, in the case of Luna, the reach among entry plan users.

The rollout may leave different accounts for a few days

There's a reason two people with the same account type might see different interfaces right now. The Help Center describes GPT-5.6 as a gradual release and warns that features may not yet be available to all eligible accounts.

The official documentation itself still reflects parts of this transition: the August 6 announcement describes a shift between quick responses and deeper reasoning with Sol on eligible plans, while the technical availability page retains references to GPT-5.5 Instant in some configurations. This recommends caution when treating a specific configuration as universal while the rollout is in progress.

For those who use ChatGPT, therefore, the easiest change to verify is not a supposed jump in performance measured by third parties. It is the reorganization of the product: Sol receives adjustments aimed at the daily use of eligible subscribers, while Luna takes on a larger space in Free and Go, with expansion of the text and reasoning without transforming these plans into free access to Sol.
