The Gift of Deceit: who are Lúcia, Maíra and Irina, and what is the central conflict?

Netflix's new Brazilian series puts a turbulent mother-daughter relationship under pressure when Irina enters the picture. Here is what the teaser confirms and what remains unknown.

Três mulheres em um ambiente sofisticado e noturno, posicionadas em tensão entre si diante de uma vista do Rio de Janeiro.

The Gift of Deceit starts from a family conflict that already exists: Lúcia Rossetti and Maíra Rossetti, a mother and daughter from Rio de Janeiro's elite, have a complex and turbulent relationship. Irina's arrival in that dynamic does not create the tension from scratch; according to Netflix's official presentation, her path crossing theirs makes the web of mysteries and tensions intensify.

That is the key to understanding the teaser without turning promotional material into a complete synopsis. Netflix has already defined who sits at the center of the story and the kind of friction driving the series, but it is still withholding crucial information about the three women's pasts, interests and alliances.

Who is Lúcia Rossetti?

Lúcia, played by Marieta Severo, is officially introduced as an art collector living within the luxury of Rio's elite. The most important detail, however, is relational: she is Maíra's mother, and their relationship begins the series already marked by complexity and turbulence.

So far, Netflix has not explained what caused that strain or detailed what Lúcia wants to protect, hide or achieve. There is therefore no official basis yet for reducing her to a specific role such as antagonist, manipulative matriarch or victim of a conspiracy. What is confirmed is her social position, her connection to the art world and her conflict with her daughter.

Who is Maíra Rossetti?

Maíra, played by Alice Wegmann, is Lúcia's daughter and the other side of the family relationship that structures the starting point. The official publicity does not yet provide her profession, her own objective or the concrete cause of the conflict with her mother.

That lack of detail matters: the teaser places Maíra at the center of the game of appearances, but does not settle whether she is reacting to Lúcia, driving part of the intrigue or being displaced by Irina's arrival. Treating any of those possibilities as fact would go beyond what Netflix has revealed.

Who is Irina?

Irina, played by Nanda Costa, is the character Netflix has deliberately said the least about. The official material confirms that her path crosses those of Lúcia and Maíra and that, from that meeting onward, the web of mysteries and tensions intensifies.

That makes it reasonable to describe her as a dramatic catalyst, but not as a villain, ally, rival or love interest: none of those functions has been confirmed. Her background, the reason she meets the Rossettis and the bond she forms with each of them remain open questions.

What is the central conflict in The Gift of Deceit?

Based on what had been released by September 15, 2026, the central conflict can safely be framed this way: an already turbulent mother-daughter relationship is put under pressure by the arrival of a third woman, while secrets, intrigue and shifting loyalties deepen distrust among the characters.

Netflix itself presents the series as a blend of melodrama and suspense and uses ideas such as manipulation, family conflict, intrigue, twists, betrayals and secrets in its materials. That defines the dramatic field, but it still does not reveal the central secret, who is lying to whom or which character knows the most.

What the teaser's music adds to the reading

The teaser is set to a new recording of Dom de Iludir, a song written by Caetano Veloso, performed by Liniker. The choice directly matches the promise of a story built around appearance, truth, lies and interpretation. It is a tonal device: it helps establish the series' theme, but it is not evidence that any specific character is lying to or manipulating the others.

That distinction matters because the promotional material is designed to suggest relationships and risks without explaining the plot mechanics. The safest reading is to treat the Lúcia–Maíra–Irina triangle as the core of the tension rather than filling in gaps that the series still intends to reveal.

Cast and creative team already confirmed

In addition to Marieta Severo, Alice Wegmann and Nanda Costa, the announced cast includes José de Abreu, Felipe Camargo, Luciana Paes, Laila Garin, Rui Ricardo Diaz, Heloisa Jorge, Allan Souza Lima, Jonas Bloch, Giovanna de Jesus, José Mata, Thiago Justino, Hamilton Dias, Laura Vick, Yanna Lavigne and Rosanna Viegas.

The series was created by Diane Maia and Mirna Nogueira, with Mirna also serving as head writer. Mauro Mendonça Filho is the general director, with Gabriela Amaral Almeida and Daniela Carvalho also directing. The production is by Conspiração for Netflix, with Amaia as associate producer.

When does The Gift of Deceit premiere?

The only official timing currently available is that The Gift of Deceit will premiere later in 2026. As of September 15, Netflix had not announced a specific date. Any exact day or month attached to the release at this point should therefore be treated as unconfirmed.

The primary references for new information are Netflix's official announcement and the Tudum feature on the teaser.
