In Macondo, repeating a name is never just repeating a name. José Arcadio, Aureliano, Arcadio and Remedios cross generations, change positions in the family and, sometimes, seem to change places even in the memory of those watching.
Confusion is not a failure of attention. It comes from the very construction of One Hundred Years of Solitude, an extensive, non-linear family story deliberately marked by repetitions. Screenwriter Camila Brugés told Tudum that the novel brings together around 50 relevant characters and required the team to reorganize events and trajectories for the audiovisual adaptation.
This guide organizes the Buendía family tree up to the generation that gains importance in Part 2. It contains family relationships revealed in Part 1, basic information from the novel necessary to understand the names and data that Netflix itself has already released. It does not anticipate destinies, deaths, twists and turns or the closure of the family.
The first batch of seven episodes of Part 2 premieres on August 5, 2026. The special episode that ends the adaptation arrives separately, on August 26, 2026. So it's not one episode a week from the start: the seven regular chapters arrive together, followed by the big finale three weeks later.
Before the tree: what is the spoiler limit?
The organization below assumes that the reader has already watched all eight episodes of Part 1.
The guide reveals:
- who is whose son, grandson or great-grandson;
- which characters were incorporated into the house, but were not born into the family;
- how Pilar Ternera connects two branches;
- who are the twins mentioned by Netflix in the release of Part 2;
- why similar names do not indicate the same person.
The guide does not reveal:
- the fate of the characters in Part 2;
- the events associated with the titles of the new episodes;
- the descendants that appear after the twins;
- the final meaning of the manuscripts;
- the outcome of Macondo.
The official synopsis already associates Fernanda del Carpio with Aureliano Segundo and presents José Arcadio Segundo as the other twin. To preserve a stricter limit, the tree does not expand Fernanda's branch or show the generations that come after.
Buendía family tree without spoilers for Part 2
José Arcadio Buendía + Úrsula Iguarán
Founders of Macondo and couple that starts the main lineage.
- José Arcadio
- eldest son of the founding couple;
- is related to Pilar Ternera;
- from this relationship comes Arcadio;
- later, he connects with Rebeca, an adopted member of the house.
- Colonel Aureliano Buendía
- second son of the founding couple;
- marries Remedios Moscote;
- with Pilar Ternera, there is Aureliano José;
- another branch brings together 17 children called Aureliano, who do not need to be memorized individually at this point.
- Amaranta
- daughter of José Arcadio Buendía and Úrsula;
- sister of José Arcadio and Colonel Aureliano;
- does not start a branch of descendants on this tree.
- Rebeca
- raised as a daughter in the Buendía household;
- she is not the biological daughter of José Arcadio Buendía and Úrsula;
- must appear next to the second family generation, but with the indication of adoption.
Arcadio + Santa Sofía de la Piedad
- Remedios the Beautiful, also identified by the original name Remedios la Bella;
- Aureliano Segundo;
- José Arcadio Segundo, twin brother of Aureliano Segundo.
Colonel Aureliano Buendía + Pilar Ternera
- Aureliano José.
This organization follows the canonical relationships of the characters and the identities used in the adaptation. Netflix presents José Arcadio Buendía, Úrsula, José Arcadio, Aureliano, Amaranta, Rebeca, Arcadio, Pilar Ternera and Remedios Moscote among the central characters of the first part. Literary reference sources confirm the branches of Arcadio, Aureliano José and the twins.
The family divided by generations
The word “generation” can vary depending on the edition, literary study or the way of counting people incorporated into the house. In this guide, it only indicates the distance from the founding couple.
First generation: the founders
José Arcadio Buendía and Úrsula Iguarán are the starting point. In addition to being the central couple at the origin of the family, they are the founders of Macondo.
The patriarch's full name is essential. When José Arcadio Buendía appears, he is the founder. When only José Arcadio appears, the reference is usually to the son.
Second generation: the children of the house
The couple's three biological children are:
- José Arcadio;
- Aureliano, who becomes Colonel Aureliano Buendía;
- Amaranta.
Rebeca becomes part of the house and is treated socially as their sister, but does not belong to the biological branch. This distinction is important to understand their relationships without transforming “growing up in the same house” into “being the daughter of the same couple”.
An analysis of the first part published by Time also identifies José Arcadio, Aureliano and Amaranta as the children raised by the founding couple, while describing Rebeca as the orphan taken in by the Buendías.
Third generation: Pilar Ternera's two sons
Pilar Ternera connects the two main male branches of the second generation:
- with José Arcadio, she has Arcadio;
- with Aureliano, she has Aureliano José.
This is one of the most efficient keys to avoid getting lost. Arcadio and Aureliano José have the same mother, but different fathers. They are not the same person nor are they brothers of the Colonel: they belong to the next generation.
Fourth generation: the children of Arcadio
Arcadio and Santa Sofía de la Piedad form the branch that leads to the new characters highlighted in Part 2:
- Remedios, the Beautiful;
- Aureliano Segundo;
- José Arcadio Segundo.
Aureliano Segundo and José Arcadio Segundo are twins. The names, however, already mix the two traditional patterns of the family: one carries “Aureliano”, while the other carries “José Arcadio”.
The official release of Part 2 identifies the two as twin sons of Arcadio.
Who's who: quick table to avoid changing names
| Character | Position in the family | How to recognize | Not to be confused with |
|---|---|---|---|
| José Arcadio Buendía | Founder of Macondo | Uses her full name and is Úrsula's husband | José Arcadio, his son |
| José Arcadio | Eldest son of the founders | Usually appears without “Buendía” in the name used by the narrative | Arcadio, your son |
| Arcadio | Grandson of the founders | Son of José Arcadio and Pilar Ternera | José Arcadio or Aureliano |
| Colonel Aureliano Buendía | Son of the founders | The title “Colonel” is the best anchor | Aureliano José and Aureliano Segundo |
| Aureliano José | Grandson of the founders | Composite name; son of Colonel and Pilar | The Colonel himself |
| Aureliano Segundo | Great-grandson of the founders | One of Arcadio's sons; twin brother of José Arcadio Segundo | Aureliano José |
| José Arcadio Segundo | Great-grandson of the founders | Twin of Aureliano Segundo | José Arcadio, second generation |
| Remedios Moscote | Family member by marriage | The surname Moscote differentiates the character | Remedios, the Beautiful |
| Remedios, the Beautiful | Daughter of Arcadio and Saint Sophia | Belongs to the twin generation | Remedios Moscote |
| Rebeca | Adopted daughter of the house | Grows up among the founders' children, but is not a biological daughter | Amaranta |
| Pilar Ternera | Mother of two branches | Mother of Arcadio and Aureliano José, with different parents | Santa Sofía de la Piedad |
| Santa Sofía de la Piedad | Arcade's Companion | Mother of Remedios, Aureliano Segundo and José Arcadio Segundo | Pilar Ternera |
The simplest rule to differentiate José Arcadio, Arcadio and the “Seconds”
Think of a four-step ladder:
- José Arcadio Buendía is the founder.
- José Arcadio is the son of the founder.
- Arcadio is the son of José Arcadio.
- José Arcadio Segundo is the son of Arcadio.
The word Segundo does not mean “son of José Arcadio”. It is part of the name of a character from another generation and also differentiates him from other José Arcadios in the family.
When in doubt, don't first try to remember what the character did. Ask: who are his parents? Position in the tree is often safer than similarity in personality.
How to differentiate Aurelianos
There is also a useful sequence:
- Aureliano, son of the founders, becomes Colonel Aureliano Buendía;
- Aureliano José is the son of the Colonel and Pilar Ternera;
- the 17 Aurelianos form a collective branch linked to the Colonel;
- Aureliano Segundo is the son of Arcadio and belongs to the twin generation.
The title “Coronel”, the complement “José” and the term “Segundo” function as labels. Reading just the first word of the name is the quickest way to confuse three different generations.
Why does García Márquez repeat so many names?
Repetition is part of the architecture of the novel.
A SparkNotes literary guide notes that García Márquez works with a reduced set of names to dramatize the repetition of stories, mistakes, and characteristics between generations. The text recommends paying attention to the full name, because small variations indicate different people.
Penguin also highlights that members of the family tend to repeat the mistakes of their ancestors and that the abundance of Arcadios, Aurelianos, Úrsulas and Amarantas is a deliberate difficulty in reading.
This does not mean that all Aurelianos have the same personality or that each José Arcadio repeats exactly the previous one. Names create echoes, not copies. The twins Aureliano Segundo and José Arcadio Segundo make this principle even more unstable: even the expectation created by the name can be questioned.
Essential Chronology of Part 1
1. José Arcadio Buendía and Úrsula found Macondo
The story begins with the couple's displacement, the founding of the village and the formation of the house that will become the center of the narrative.
2. The first family grows
José Arcadio, Aureliano and Amaranta form the nucleus of the children. Rebeca is incorporated into the house, while Pilar Ternera and the Moscote family create new emotional and family connections.
3. Children start new branches
José Arcadio and Aureliano have children linked to Pilar Ternera. It is at this point that Arcadio and Aureliano José appear — two similar names, but belonging to the grandchildren's generation.
4. Politics transforms Aureliano
Aureliano becomes identified as Colonel Aureliano Buendía, while the political conflict alters Macondo and the family organization.
5. Arcadio leads to the generation of twins
Arcadio's branch leads to Aureliano Segundo and José Arcadio Segundo, the twins who gain importance in the sequel.
The official synopses of the eight episodes of Part 1 cover the foundation of Macondo, the arrival of Rebeca, the Moscote family, Aureliano's political transformation and the growth of the Arcadio branch.
Characters who were not born Buendía, but organize the tree
Pilar Ternera
It is the connection between José Arcadio and Colonel Aureliano. Without her, the branches of Arcadio and Aureliano José appear independent, when in fact they share the same mother.
Santa Sofía de la Piedad
She is the mother of the generation formed by Remedios, the Beautiful, Aureliano Segundo and José Arcadio Segundo. Your name is rarely confused with another, but your position is essential.
Moscote Remedies
The surname is protection against confusion. Remedios Moscote belongs to Aureliano’s generation; Remedios, Bela belongs to the generation of Arcadio's children.
Pietro Crespi
It is linked to the stories of Rebeca and Amaranta, but does not create a biological branch on the presented tree.
Melquíades
He is close to different generations and to the Buendía house, but he is not related. His presence permeates the story through other types of bonds.
Fernanda del Carpio
She is a character from Part 2. Netflix has already announced her connection with Aureliano Segundo and named one of the new episodes after her. As this relationship is part of the promotional synopsis, it is not leaked information; Still, their descendants and their trajectory were left outside this tree so as not to anticipate the continuation.
When does Part 2 of One Hundred Years of Solitude premiere?
The official schedule is:
- August 5, 2026: premiere of the seven regular episodes of Part 2;
- August 26, 2026: premiere of the final special episode, directed by Laura Mora.
Adding up the eight episodes of Part 1, the seven episodes released on August 5 and the final special, the adaptation will have 16 chapters. Netflix describes the ending as an episode with a format similar to that of a feature film.
How to use this tree while watching
Keep three anchors:
- Full name: “José Arcadio Buendía” is not “José Arcadio”.
- Parents: finding out whose son the character is solves most of the doubts.
- Generation: founder, son, grandson or great-grandson.
It also helps to reserve the title Colonel exclusively for Aureliano, son of the founders. For others, always use the complement: Aureliano José or Aureliano Segundo.
Save this tree before returning to Macondo and keep the guide open during the first few episodes. As Part 2 progresses, new branches may be added in a separate version, clearly marked with spoilers.
