Ted Lasso 4: what to remember before the premiere without rewatching three seasons

Ted returns to Richmond to coach a women's team. Remember in three layers the essentials of previous seasons and what has already been confirmed.

Relações principais entre Ted, Rebecca, Keeley, Roy, Beard e Higgins antes da quarta temporada de Ted Lasso.

The fourth season of Ted Lasso begins with a familiar reversal: after leaving London to be close to his son, Ted returns to AFC Richmond — but not to resume exactly the job he had before. Your new challenge is to coach a second division women's football team.

To understand this return, you don't need to watch all the episodes. Just remember how Richmond stopped being Rebecca's revenge project, why Ted chose to return to the United States and how a proposal from Keeley paved the way for the new core of the series.

Spoiler Warning: This guide reveals events from the first three seasons. Does not present spoilers for season four episodes or treat plot rumors as fact.

What is officially confirmed about the fourth season

The fourth season premieres globally on Apple TV on August 5, 2026, with one episode. The following chapters will be available on Wednesdays until October 7, 2026. Apple describes the new premise as follows: Ted returns to Richmond to coach a Division II women's team, as he and the players learn to take risks before they have all the answers.

The official announcement confirmed the return of:

  • Jason Sudeikis as Ted Lasso;
  • Hannah Waddingham as Rebecca Welton;
  • Juno Temple as Keeley Jones;
  • Brett Goldstein as Roy Kent;
  • Brendan Hunt as Coach Beard;
  • Jeremy Swift as Leslie Higgins.

The season also introduces a new group of characters linked to women's football. Tanya Reynolds, Jude Mack, Faye Marsay, Rex Hayes, Aisling Sharkey, Abbie Hern and Grant Feely are among the additions announced by Apple.

The April 28 statement did not include all important characters from previous seasons. Nick Mohammed, who plays Nate, and Phil Dunster, who plays Jamie, for example, do not appear on that specific list of returns. This does not confirm their absence: it just means that their participation was not announced in that material. The series' current page highlights Ted, Rebecca, Keeley, Higgins, Roy, Beard and part of the new core as the main cast.

The period announced by Apple covers ten consecutive Wednesdays. The numbering below is an editorial organization; The episode titles had not been disclosed in the sources consulted on August 4, 2026.

Tier 1: Ted Lasso Essentials in Five Minutes

1. Rebecca hired Ted to fail and ended up trusting him.

At the start of the series, Rebecca Welton takes over at AFC Richmond following her divorce from Rupert Mannion. Wanting to destroy something her ex-husband loved, she hires an American football coach with no experience in English football and tries to sabotage the club itself.

The plan falls apart because Ted transforms relationships around the team. When Rebecca confesses what she did, he accepts her apology. From then on, the two build a friendship based on trust, vulnerability and mutual support — a fundamental relationship to understand why Ted's return to Richmond is not just a professional decision.

2. Richmond fell, rose and almost became champion

The club's sporting trajectory can be summarized in three movements:

  1. Season 1: Richmond is relegated from the Premier League.
  2. Season 2: the team gains access and returns to the first division.
  3. Season 3: Discredited at the start of the championship, Richmond competes for the title until the final round, beats West Ham and finishes in second place, behind Manchester City.

The Club, therefore, does not begin the fourth season as the failure that Rebecca intended to produce. It has become a competitive, valuable, and emotionally connected organization to the community.

3. Ted left office to be close to Henry

At the end of the third season, Ted decides to return to Kansas to participate more actively in the life of his son, Henry. The last scene shows him accompanying and guiding the boy in a football match.

This choice did not mean that Ted had stopped loving Richmond. She showed that her work in London was no longer worth the distance from her family. The fourth season will have to start from this decision: Apple confirmed the return to Richmond, but did not explain in advance what convinced him to cross the Atlantic again.

4. The women's team was born from Keeley's idea

In the final minutes of the third season, Keeley presents Rebecca with a proposal to create an AFC Richmond women's team. Season four turns that seed into its main starting point.

Therefore, the new team does not emerge as an isolated initiative by Ted. It is born from the partnership between two women who have developed a friendship and professional relationship since the first season.

5. Roy inherited command of the men's team

After Ted's departure, Roy Kent takes over as head coach of AFC Richmond. The former captain also begins therapy, recognizing that intensity, loyalty and strength alone do not resolve his emotional difficulties.

Apple confirmed Brett Goldstein for season four, but did not detail how Roy's work on the men's team will intersect with Ted's new project.

6. Beard stayed in London

Coach Beard arrives to board the flight to the United States with Ted, but decides to remain in the United Kingdom. The final montage shows his marriage to Jane and suggests that his life is definitely linked to Richmond.

Brendan Hunt is officially among the returns. Thus, Ted does not begin the new work without his historical partner — although the dynamic between them may have changed after the events of the previous finale.

7. Nate has completed a cycle of falling and repairing

Nate starts the series as an ignored wardrobe worker, becomes a trainer and comes to believe that Ted does not sufficiently recognize his value. In the second season, his frustration turns to resentment: he breaks up with Richmond and accepts to work for Rupert at West Ham.

In the third, Nate realizes the type of environment Rupert builds, leaves the rival club and returns to Richmond in an inferior position. Ted forgives him, but returning does not automatically erase the previous damage. In the end, Nate returns to the coaching staff.

As Nick Mohammed was not listed among the returns in the initial season four announcement, Nate's current fate should be treated as an open question, not a confirmed absence.

8. Keeley didn't choose Roy or Jamie

The relationship between Keeley and Roy ends before the end of the third season. Roy and Jamie compete for her attention again, but Keeley refuses the idea of being treated as a choice between the two.

Professionally, she rebuilds her public relations agency and partners with Barbara. Her proposal to create the women's team shows that Keeley's trajectory is now defined less by her romances and more by her ability to create her own projects.

Layer 2: the chronology of the three seasons

Season 1: Form a team before winning games

Ted arrives in England without mastering the rules of football, but he understands people. He tries to transform a cast divided by egos, insecurities and internal disputes into a team capable of trusting each other.

Roy, a veteran captain, initially rejects the new coach's methods. Jamie Tartt, talented and individualistic, comes into conflict with Roy and the rest of the cast. Keeley stops being just Jamie's girlfriend, gets closer to Rebecca and begins to build a professional identity.

At the same time, Ted's marriage ends. His permanent willingness to help others contrasts with the difficulty of accepting that some relationships cannot be repaired with effort and optimism alone.

The season ends with Rebecca's confession, Ted's forgiveness, and Richmond's demotion. Sports failure does not destroy the project: for the first time, owner, coaches and players share the same direction.

Season 2: optimism meets its limits

In the second division, Richmond faces a string of draws and the pressure to return to the Premier League. Sports psychologist Sharon Fieldstone arrives at the club and challenges Ted's resistance to therapy.

The coach's panic attacks can no longer be hidden. With Sharon's help, he begins to confront his grief, anxiety, and the idea that showing suffering would be incompatible with his role as a leader.

Roy leaves sports commentary and joins the coaching staff. Keeley receives support to open her own agency. Nate, on the other hand, confuses recognition with power and interprets Ted's attention to others as abandonment.

Richmond gains access, but the season ends with a rift between Ted and Nate. The team moves up a division while its coaching staff leaves.

Season 3: from “Lasso Way” to “Richmond Way”

Back in the Premier League, Richmond is treated as a relegation candidate. Roy takes the place left by Nate, while Nate takes charge of Rupert's West Ham.

After fluctuations and the passing of star Zava, Ted, Beard and Roy develop their own version of “total football”. The change works because players have already learned to communicate, take up space for each other and prioritize the team.

Journalist Trent Crimm accompanies the club to write a book initially called The Lasso Way. Ted suggests removing his name from the title. The final version is called The Richmond Way, indicating that the culture created at the club no longer belongs to one person.

Richmond finishes as runner-up. Rebecca maintains control of the club, but sells 49% to fans. Roy takes over the men's team, Beard remains in London, Nate is reinstated, Keeley proposes the women's team, and Ted returns to Kansas.

Layer 3: how the main relationships turned out

Relationship Where was it in the third season Why It Matters Now
Ted and Rebecca Friends and allies, after starting as a victim and perpetrator of sabotage Rebecca continues to lead Richmond and Ted returns to the club
Ted and Henry Ted returns to Kansas to be present in his son's life The new trip to London needs to coexist with this priority
Ted and Beard Beard chooses to stay in England The two return to work in the same universe, but now have lives that are less dependent on each other
Rebecca and Keeley Friends and professional partners The idea for the women's team comes from Keeley and depends on Rebecca's support
Roy and Keeley Separated, without definitive reconciliation Both are confirmed in the new season
Roy and Jamie Rivalry evolves into mentoring and friendship The relationship represents one of the most complete transformations brought about by the club's culture
Ted and Nate Reconciliation begun, with Nate back in Richmond The pardon occurred, but Nate's current situation was not announced
Rebecca and Rupert Rebecca stops measuring her success by her ex-husband's defeat Richmond stops being an instrument of revenge and becomes a community
Richmond and the fans Part of the club is sold to fans The institution now belongs symbolically — and partly financially — to the community

What changed about the starting point of the series

The first season begins with a man with no experience in English football trying to lead athletes who don't respect him. The fourth begins with an experienced coach in the Richmond universe entering another sporting environment, with new players, another division and different institutional challenges.

The most important change is not just swapping the men's team for the women's team. Ted can no longer play the same role as an innocent foreigner who doesn't know everything. He knows the club, has accumulated authority and carries the results of his previous choices.

At the same time, the women's team should not be treated as a simple repeat of the original Greyhounds. The new premise raises questions about resources, structure, visibility and forms of leadership in women's sport. Reuters reported that the production consulted women's football professionals and that the season addresses differences in investment and working conditions between teams. These elements were released before the premiere, but episode details have been deliberately excluded from this guide.

The separation is important because trailers, promotional photographs and interviews can suggest paths without confirming how events will be presented. Expectations should not be published as a synopsis.

Five themes to observe without trying to guess the plot

Leadership requires adaptation

Ted got results because he learned to listen to different people. Now, he will need to demonstrate whether his method is truly adaptable or whether it only worked within the culture he built with the former cast.

Belonging without dependence

Season 3 concluded that Richmond was not “Ted’s team.” It was a community capable of continuing after him. His return could test whether the club has matured or whether it still depends excessively on the presence of the former coach.

The cost of second chances

Rebecca, Jamie, and Nate were given opportunities to change, but their paths only worked when they recognized the damage they had caused. The series tends to differentiate forgiveness from the absence of consequences.

Work and family

Ted left his job to be close to his son. Any new professional choice will be compared to this decision, even if the series presents circumstances that are still unknown.

Supporting a project is not the same as understanding it

Rebecca, Keeley and Ted can believe in the women's team and still make mistakes. The more interesting question is not whether they have good intentions, but whether they can listen to the people directly affected by their decisions.

Do you only have time to watch three episodes?

A minimal review can be made with the three season finales:

  1. Season 1, episode 10 — “The Hope That Kills You”: shows the relegation, the club’s new unit and the commitment to rebuild.
  2. Season 2, episode 12 — “Inverting the Pyramid of Success”: brings together access to the Premier League, Ted's crisis and the break with Nate.
  3. Season 3, episode 12 — “So Long, Farewell”: Defines the fate of Ted, Roy, Beard, Rebecca, Keeley, Nate and the club itself.

Those who prefer not to review anything can just keep this sentence: Ted left a Richmond capable of walking without him, and now he returns to help build a part of the club that didn't yet exist.
