Fact check reviewed: 28 September 2026. The Taça de Portugal, Taça da Liga and Liga Portugal are not three versions of the same competition. Liga Portugal Betclic is the top-flight league championship, decided on points over two rounds. The Taça da Liga is a short cup run by Liga Portugal, with eight clubs determined by the previous season's final standings. The Taça de Portugal is the national cup organised by the Portuguese Football Federation, brings together clubs from several levels plus district and regional representatives, and is decided by knockout rounds.
Key differences in one table
| Competition | Organiser | Who takes part and how they enter | Format | Route to the title | Related berth or consequence |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Taça de Portugal | Portuguese Football Federation, FPF | In 2026/27 there are 146 clubs: 42 representatives of district and regional associations, 52 from Campeonato de Portugal, 19 from Liga 3, 15 from Liga Portugal 2 and 18 from Liga Portugal 1. | Knockout competition with staggered entry by division. In 2026/27, the semi-finals are also single matches at neutral venues. | A club must survive each knockout round to reach the final. | The domestic cup is the specific route recognised by UEFA for a Europa League berth, subject to the access and reallocation rules applying to the relevant season. |
| Taça da Liga | Portuguese Professional Football League, Liga Portugal | Eight clubs: the top six in Liga Portugal 1 and the top two in Liga Portugal 2 from the previous season, excluding B teams. | Quarter-finals, semi-finals and final, all as single matches. The semi-finals and final form the Final Four. | Three wins are enough to become champion, starting in the quarter-finals. | The competition regulations do not create a separate European berth. UEFA qualification comes through the league and the national cup under European rules. |
| Liga Portugal | Portuguese Professional Football League, Liga Portugal | 18 clubs qualified for the top division according to the previous season's standings and the promotion, relegation and licensing rules. | Points-based league with two symmetrical rounds: every club plays every other club at home and away. | The champion is the club that finishes top of the standings after the tie-break rules are applied where necessary. | The final table determines the champion, Portugal's UEFA places, and the relegation and play-off positions under the applicable regulations. |
Taça de Portugal: the broadest competition of the three
The defining feature of the Taça de Portugal is the breadth of its field. In 2026/27, the published format includes clubs from Liga Portugal 1, Liga Portugal 2, Liga 3 and Campeonato de Portugal, together with representatives of district and regional associations. B teams and other cases barred by the regulations do not enter as if they were independent first teams.
Entry is staggered. The first round begins with clubs from the lower national levels and district or regional representatives, with byes provided for in the format. Liga Portugal 2 clubs enter in the second round. Liga Portugal 1 clubs that are not playing in UEFA competitions enter in the third round. The five Portuguese clubs involved in UEFA competitions in 2026/27 enter only in the fourth round.
This makes the Taça de Portugal very different from the Taça da Liga: a club outside the two professional divisions can progress through successive rounds and eventually face top-flight opposition. Another important 2026/27 change is that the semi-finals no longer use two legs and are instead played as one-off matches at neutral venues. The route to the final is therefore an essentially continuous knockout path.
Taça da Liga: eight clubs and a much shorter route
The Taça da Liga is also a knockout cup, but entry is far more restricted. Liga Portugal's 2026/27 regulations set eight participants: the top six from the previous season's Liga Portugal 1 and the top two from Liga Portugal 2. B teams are excluded.
The quarter-finals begin with pairings tied to the previous final standings. First in Liga Portugal 1 hosts second in Liga Portugal 2; second in Liga Portugal 1 hosts first in Liga Portugal 2; third in the top division hosts sixth; and fourth hosts fifth. The winners advance to two single-match semi-finals. The final is also a single match, and the Final Four is staged at a neutral or neutralised stadium designated by Liga Portugal.
There is also a practical difference in tie resolution: the Taça da Liga regulations state that a match level at the end of regulation time goes to kicks from the penalty mark. There is no league phase inside the competition in 2026/27.
Liga Portugal: consistency across 34 matches per club
Liga Portugal 1 follows the opposite logic from the two cups. The regulations provide for 18 clubs and a points competition. Liga Portugal points competitions have two symmetrical rounds: every participant plays all the others once at home and once away. With 18 clubs, that means 34 matches for each team.
A win is worth three points, a draw one, and a defeat zero. The title does not depend on a final: it goes to the club that finishes top after the full schedule and after the regulatory tie-break criteria are applied when required.
Entry into the following edition depends on remaining in the top flight, promotion from Liga Portugal 2, and compliance with legal and regulatory requirements. For 2026/27, the regulations provide for the bottom two clubs to be relegated directly and for a play-off involving the club immediately above the direct relegation places and the best eligible Liga Portugal 2 club after the direct promotion positions.
What “knockout” means in each competition
In the Taça de Portugal and Taça da Liga, losing a knockout tie ends a club's participation. The difference is the size of the path and the entry rules. The Taça de Portugal starts with a much larger field and includes clubs from different levels; the Taça da Liga starts directly at the quarter-final stage with eight qualified teams. Liga Portugal is not knockout football: a defeat costs points, but the club remains in the championship and can recover over later rounds.
How European places work
UEFA places should be read separately from the domestic competition format. Europa League entry rules reserve a route for the domestic cup winner, while other places for an association are allocated through league position according to the applicable access list and coefficient. If the Taça de Portugal winner has already secured European football by another route, reallocation follows the UEFA rules for the relevant season.
The Taça da Liga, by contrast, does not appear as an independent qualification route in UEFA entry rules. Winning it gives the club the Taça da Liga title, but it does not replace league position or domestic-cup-winner status for European qualification.
Which competition answers which question?
- Who is Portugal's top-flight national champion? Liga Portugal.
- Which competition brings several tiers together in a nationwide knockout cup? Taça de Portugal.
- Which cup includes only eight qualifiers from the two professional leagues? Taça da Liga.
- Which one demands the greatest consistency across the season? Liga Portugal, because every point from the two rounds counts towards the table.
- Which offers the shortest route to a trophy? Taça da Liga, because a participant begins in the quarter-finals and needs to get through three matches.
In short, “league” and “cup” describe different competitive logics. Liga Portugal rewards accumulated performance over 34 matches per club. The Taça da Liga is a compact professional knockout tournament based on the previous season's standings. The Taça de Portugal is the broadest national knockout competition, with staggered entry and clubs from several levels of Portuguese football.
