How resident access will work

COR Rio states that vehicles belonging to residents of the surrounding area will be allowed to enter upon presentation of proof of residence. Residents inside the affected area should therefore carry a document showing their address and be prepared to present it at control points.

The published notice does not specify a single accepted proof-of-residence format or identify exclusive resident entry points. The confirmed requirement is proof of residence for vehicle access.

How to plan travel near São Januário

  • Before 2:30 p.m.: this is the period before the first road closures begin, although some parking restrictions are already in effect.
  • After 2:30 p.m.: avoid relying on Avenida Roberto Dinamite and the closed sections of Francisco Palheta and Ferreira de Araújo as through routes.
  • After 4:30 p.m.: expect a wider restricted area, additional closures, a traffic change on Rua do Bonfim and a temporary direction reversal on Rua Teixeira Júnior.
  • If you live nearby: carry proof of residence for vehicle access.
  • If you plan to park: check the restrictions before leaving because some begin well before kickoff.
  • During the operation: follow traffic officers and variable message signs installed in the area.

What the traffic operation will include

According to the Rio Operations and Resilience Center, the operation will include CET-Rio agents, traffic support staff, operational vehicles and motorcycles. Seven variable message signs will provide information on closure times and alternative routes. COR Rio technicians will also monitor traffic through cameras and may adjust traffic-light timing if necessary.

The official publication does not provide one written alternative route for every trip. Because the best diversion depends on origin and destination, drivers should rely on local signage and COR Rio real-time updates during the operation.
