2026 Farroupilha Parade: who can register September 9–12 and what to prepare

Registration is in person September 9–12 in Porto Alegre. See who the notice covers, what the form requires, and the GTA rule for horses.

Cavaleiros em trajes gaúchos desfilam em Porto Alegre com bandeiras do Rio Grande do Sul diante de um prédio histórico.

Registration for Porto Alegre’s 2026 Farroupilha Parade will be open from September 9 to 12, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., at Galpão do Turismo RS – Governo do Estado, on Rua Glaucus Saraiva, inside the Acampamento Farroupilha at Parque Harmonia. The parade itself is scheduled for September 20 on Avenida Edvaldo Pereira Paiva.

The official notice is directed at piquetes and traditionalist organizations: the registration form collects institutional information, and the announced evaluation criteria apply to organizations. The notice does not set out a separate walk-in registration procedure for individual participants.

Who can register for the 2026 Farroupilha Parade

Rio Grande do Sul’s Secretariat of Culture says that “interested parties” should go to the registration point and, when describing the form and evaluation, specifically refers to piquetes and traditionalist organizations. The safest reading is therefore that the announced registration is for groups seeking to take part institutionally in the parade.

The notice does not list separate participant categories, describe individual registration, or state a specific membership requirement beyond the group’s traditionalist context. If an organization’s eligibility is unclear, it is best to confirm with the organizers before making the trip.

The official notice describes in-person registration and does not provide an online form for this procedure.

What information to prepare for the registration form

According to the Secretariat of Culture, the form must include information that will be read out as the piquete or organization passes along the avenue. Prepare:

  • name of the organization;
  • date it was founded;
  • name of its first leader (“primeiro patrão”);
  • name of its current leader (“atual patrão”);
  • the organization’s motto;
  • a brief history;
  • number of participants.

The notice does not list a personal ID, taxpayer number, company registration, meeting minutes, proof of address, or similar documents as mandatory registration requirements. Those items should not be presented as requirements unless the organizers confirm them.

Bringing horses? A GTA is mandatory

Every horse taking part in the parade must have a Guia de Trânsito Animal (GTA), Brazil’s Animal Transit Guide. This requirement is stated explicitly in the registration announcement.

Rio Grande do Sul’s Secretariat of Agriculture explains that a GTA is the document used for animal transport and records information such as origin, destination, sanitary conditions, and the purpose of the movement. The responsible party must meet the sanitary requirements that apply to the species. In Rio Grande do Sul, the service is available through official channels, including the Produtor Online platform; for equids, the Galope tool can pre-validate animal data, tests, and vaccinations to facilitate travel for events and outings.

Do not leave the animals’ documentation until registration day. Parade registration and sanitary documentation serve different purposes: registering the organization does not replace the GTA or other sanitary conditions required for transporting a horse.

How organizations will be evaluated in the parade

Traditionalist organizations will be evaluated under criteria established by the Movimento Tradicionalista Gaúcho (MTG). The state notice highlights three points:

  • the peão’s traditional attire;
  • the prenda’s traditional attire, with women’s bombacha trousers permitted;
  • horse tack and saddling (encilha).

The official announcement also says that the three organizations with the largest number of mounted participants will receive awards.

Practical checklist before going to the registration point

  • confirm that participation will be registered in the name of the piquete or traditionalist organization;
  • organize the seven institutional details requested for the form;
  • have an up-to-date participant count;
  • if horses will participate, check the GTA status for each animal and the applicable sanitary requirements;
  • go to Galpão do Turismo RS between September 9 and 12, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.;
  • if your case involves an issue not covered by the notice — such as who may represent the organization or whether extra paperwork is needed — confirm it with the organizers before the deadline.

What the official notice does not yet specify

In the notice consulted, the Secretariat of Culture does not specify a list of personal documents for the representative, a power-of-attorney template, a company-registration requirement, individual registration, parade order, or the assembly time for September 20. Those details should not be inferred from the registration announcement.

Because the announced registration window closes on September 12, any additional instructions published by the organizers before that date should take precedence over earlier guidance.

Key dates

  • September 9: in-person registration opens.
  • September 12: last day of the announced registration window.
