Lençóis Maranhenses in 5 days: Barreirinhas, Santo Amaro or Atins?

In five days, trying to sleep on all three bases tends to cost too much time. See when to prioritize Barreirinhas, Santo Amaro or Atins and how to divide the nights.

For a first trip of five days and four nights, the most balanced split is usually two nights in Barreirinhas and two in Santo Amaro do Maranhão. Barreirinhas facilitates arrival, concentrates services and provides access to classic circuits; Santo Amaro makes up for it with its proximity to the dune field. Atins makes more sense when the beach, village and slower-paced travel are an important part of the experience.

The main mistake in such a short script is trying to sleep on all three bases. In transport offers consulted in August 2026, a shared stretch from Atins to Barreirinhas takes approximately 90 minutes, while Barreirinhas–Santo Amaro appears with estimates of around 1h30 to 2h. Added check-out, waiting, connection and new check-in, adding Atins between the other two bases can transform a few hours of travel into a good part of a day.

Barreirinhas, Santo Amaro or Atins: which base makes more sense?

The three do not fulfill the same function in the script. ICMBio considers Barreirinhas and Santo Amaro to be two of the main cities with access to the National Park; Atins is a village in the municipality of Barreirinhas, located outside the conservation unit, close to the mouth of the Preguiças River and the northeastern limit of the park.

Base Best for Relationship with the parkRole on a 5-day trip
Barreirinhas First trip, greater range of services, classic circuits and Rio Preguiças Access to the Lagoas and Atins hubs; circuits such as Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Bonita depart from here 2 nights in the most balanced itinerary
Santo Amaro Prioritize dunes and lagoons and reduce travel to attractions The headquarters is less than 2 km from the park and there is access on foot in permitted areas or by accredited vehicles 2 nights, or more if the main focus is the lagoons
Atins Beach, kitesurfing, village atmosphere and a more relaxed pace It is outside the park, close to Canto dos Lençóis and the northeast limit It would enter in place of one of the other bases, not as a third stop

Barreirinhas has the easiest logistics for those who are still understanding the destination. The Maranhão Tourism Department describes it as the park's main tourist base, with more diverse accommodation. On the ICMBio side, it is from Barreirinhas that, among others, the Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Bonita circuits leave; the Blue Lagoon is usually operated as a part-time tour.

Santo Amaro has another advantage: the distance between the city and the park is small. ICMBio informs that the municipal headquarters is less than 2 km from the conservation unit. Among the officially described routes are Betânia, Ponta Verde and América, as well as other attractions subject to natural conditions and local operations.

Atins offers a different experience. The village is close to the beach, the mouth of Preguiças and Canto dos Lençóis. It's a coherent choice for those who want to combine dunes with beaches or kitesurfing, but it's not an obligatory stage on a first short trip.

The division that works best in five days

Considering five consecutive days, four nights and arrival and departure through the São Luís region, this is an efficient division for a first trip:

  1. Day 1 — São Luís → Barreirinhas: travel in the morning whenever possible. If arrival permits and there is compatible operation, fit in a half-day circuit at the end of the day; otherwise, preserve the afternoon and start the tours the next day.
  2. Day 2 — Barreirinhas: reserve the day for one of the Polo Lagoas circuits. Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Bonita are among the official itineraries in the region. If a trip along the Preguiças River is a priority, use this day for it and agree to reduce the number of lagoon circuits.
  3. Day 3 — Barreirinhas → Santo Amaro: transfer early. Road travel is currently announced by operators with a duration of approximately 1h30 to 2h. If you arrive in the morning or early afternoon, it may be possible to enjoy a shorter tour, depending on the time and conditions of the day.
  4. Day 4 — Santo Amaro: leave the only day completely free from the base for a longer itinerary, such as Betânia or Ponta Verde, choosing with the operator according to the conditions of the lagoons.
  5. Day 5 — Santo Amaro → São Luís: turn around with enough margin for the flight. Shared transport times should not be treated as a guaranteed air connection.

The order Barreirinhas first and Santo Amaro later also avoids ending the trip in Atins, from where it would still be necessary to make an additional stage before continuing towards São Luís.

If the five days are full in the region, not counting arrival and departure trips, the proportion may change to two nights in Barreirinhas and three in Santo Amaro. The extra day is better spent deepening a base than adding another check-in.

When is it worth sleeping only in Santo Amaro

If the priority is to spend as much time as possible among dunes and lagoons, without special interest in the Preguiças River, the Barreirinhas structure or Atins beach, staying four nights in Santo Amaro is the solution with fewer hotel changes.

This does not mean that Santo Amaro is objectively “better” than the other bases. It's a logistical decision: the proximity to the park reduces the time between accommodation and various attractions. The municipality has inns and restaurants and, according to ICMBio, is less than 2 km from the conservation unit.

For a trip whose declared objective is “to see as many lagoons in five days”, this alternative may be even more efficient than the 2 + 2 split.

What if Atins is a priority?

Atins deserves two nights when the traveler wants the village itself to be part of the trip. Beach, wind sports, walks in the surrounding area and access to Canto dos Lençóis give the place a different profile from Barreirinhas and Santo Amaro.

In this case, the best decision is to remove Santo Amaro or Barreirinhas from the itinerary, instead of trying to keep all three.

A Barreirinhas + Atins combination is logistically simple because there is transport between the two. A shared service consulted in August 2026 advertises approximately 90 minutes by speedboat between Atins and Barreirinhas. The times, however, depend on the operator, the day and availability.

There is also a recent change that deserves attention from anyone thinking about renting a car. In a letter signed on July 11, 2026, ICMBio reinforced the ban on private and non-accredited vehicles in the dune field and determined that the road outside the park is the authorized land route between the headquarters of Barreirinhas and Atins. Therefore, do not plan to reach Atins by crossing the dune field with your own vehicle.

For four nights, a combination of two nights in Barreirinhas and two in Atins works best for those who have a night-only flight on the last day or a later night in São Luís. Otherwise, relying on Atins → Barreirinhas → São Luís on the same day as the flight leaves little room for delays.

Three bases in five days almost never pay off

On paper, Barreirinhas + Atins + Santo Amaro seems to offer a more complete trip. In practice, there are three check-ins, three check-outs and at least two important base changes.

The regular services found in the research treat Atins–Barreirinhas and Barreirinhas–Santo Amaro as separate sections. Using only the advertised times, it would be approximately three hours or more of effective travel between Atins and Santo Amaro via Barreirinhas, before considering waiting and connecting.

With just four nights, the gain from sleeping in the three locations hardly compensates for the time taken away from sightseeing. To get to know all three more calmly, it makes more sense to extend the trip.

Don't choose the lake just by its name

Lençóis is a dynamic landscape. Lagoons appear, change and can lose volume as rain, wind and the dry season advance. ICMBio itself mentions this variation when describing the Barreirinhas circuits.

Therefore, the itinerary must first define base and region of the tour. The choice of the specific lagoon can be confirmed closer to the trip with an accredited provider who knows which spots are in the best condition that week.

The park remains open to visitors throughout the year. Official material from ICMBio generally indicates May to September as the most favorable period for finding full lagoons after the rainy season, although the condition of each lagoon varies from year to year.

What to check before booking tours

ICMBio informs that it does not charge admission to enter the Lençóis Maranhenses National Park. What the visitor pays for are the services contracted with agencies and operators. For motorized tours within the unit, accredited vehicles and providers must be used; Private vehicles cannot tour the park.

Before finalizing the itinerary, confirm the transfer times between the bases, the collection time at the accommodation, the status of the lakes and whether the provider has valid accreditation. Schedules published by the transport company are an operational reference, not a permanent guarantee.

For five days, the decision can be summarized as follows: Barreirinhas + Santo Amaro for a balanced first trip; Santo Amaro alone to maximize park time; Barreirinhas + Atins when the beach and town are a central part of the trip. Sleeping at the three bases is better for a longer itinerary.
