Brazil's 2026 Série B changed the logic of the promotion race. After the 38-round league phase, only the teams finishing 1st and 2nd are promoted directly to the 2027 Série A. Clubs ending the season from 3rd to 6th enter playoffs that decide the other two promotion places. The change was formalized by the CBF in the competition regulations and technical documents.

How promotion works in the 2026 Série B

The championship still has 20 clubs playing a double round-robin schedule, for 38 matches per team. The difference is what happens after the final league table is set.

Final positionOutcome
1st and 2ndDirect promotion to the 2027 Série A
3rd to 6thQualification for the promotion playoffs
17th to 20thRelegation to the 2027 Série C

The CBF confirms the 38-round format and the two direct promotion places for the top two teams. It also confirms that the other two places will be decided through ties pairing 3rd with 6th and 4th with 5th. See the technical documents published by the CBF.

What is the playoff bracket

The four clubs finishing from 3rd to 6th are split into two independent ties:

  • 3rd place vs 6th place;
  • 4th place vs 5th place.

Each tie has a first leg and a second leg. The winner of 3rd vs 6th earns one promotion place, while the winner of 4th vs 5th takes the other. There is no final between the two promoted playoff winners.

Who hosts the second leg and what happens if the aggregate score is level

The teams finishing 3rd and 4th have an important sporting advantage: they host the second leg. In addition, if the tie is still level after the scores from both matches are combined, the promotion place goes to the team that finished higher in the league phase.

In practice, 3rd place has the advantage of an aggregate draw against 6th, and 4th has the same advantage against 5th. There is no penalty shootout when the aggregate score is level. This detail keeps final league position important even for clubs that have already secured a top-six place. ge explains the playoff tiebreak rule.

Simple example

If the 6th-placed team wins the first leg 1-0 and the 3rd-placed team wins the second leg 2-1, the aggregate score is 2-2. In that situation, the 3rd-placed team is promoted because it finished higher in the regular league table. For the 6th-placed club to advance, it must finish the two matches ahead on aggregate.

When the promotion playoffs will be played

The league phase is scheduled to end on November 14. The playoff matches are scheduled for November 21 and November 28, 2026, with the first legs followed by the second legs. The higher-ranked teams, 3rd and 4th, host the second match. See the playoff calendar reported from the regulations.

What changes in the final stretch of the Série B

The main effect is that the table no longer has only one relevant promotion line. Instead of watching only the former top four, the run-in now has two distinct zones:

  • Top two: 1st and 2nd secure promotion without a knockout tie;
  • Top six: teams from 3rd to 6th remain in the promotion race, but must go through the playoffs.

With Round 28 completed in September, each club has ten league matches left. That means the difference between finishing 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th or 6th has concrete consequences. Second place avoids the playoffs. Third and fourth enter the knockout stage with the second leg at home and the advantage if the aggregate score is level. Fifth and sixth can still go up, but they must overcome a better-ranked opponent across the two legs.

Why 3rd and 4th are worth more than simply reaching the top six

Qualifying for the top six is the first target, but the position inside that group also matters. The regulations reward 3rd and 4th in two ways: hosting the second leg and advancing if the aggregate score is level.

That is why a club already mathematically guaranteed a top-six finish can still have a competitive reason to chase a higher position. Likewise, a team in 5th or 6th can try to climb the table to move onto the favorable side of the playoff advantage.

What are the league-phase tiebreak criteria

If two or more clubs finish level on points, the final table follows the tiebreak criteria set by the regulations. The order is:

  1. most wins;
  2. best goal difference;
  3. most goals scored;
  4. head-to-head record, when only two clubs are tied;
  5. fewest red cards;
  6. fewest yellow cards;
  7. drawing of lots.

These criteria can decide the line between 2nd and 3rd, determine who reaches the top six, or establish who finishes 3rd and 4th and therefore carries the playoff advantage.

What to watch in the final rounds

To understand the run-in without turning the current standings into a prediction, focus on four objective points: the gap to the top two, the gap to 6th place, the battle for 3rd and 4th, and the tiebreak criteria. A league table after any single round is only a snapshot and can change through Round 38.

The CBF has already published the detailed schedule for Rounds 31 to 34, including dates, venues, kickoff times and broadcasts. Check the official schedule for Rounds 31 to 34.
