Brazilian Serie B 2026 after 26 rounds: 4th and 5th are level and the top-six gap is 2 points

The table is compressed: Vila Nova and Fortaleza have 44 points, while sixth-placed CRB are only two ahead of Operário-PR and Atlético-GO.

Short answer: after 26 rounds of the 2026 Brazilian Serie B, the traditional “top four” is so tight that fourth-placed Vila Nova and fifth-placed Fortaleza are level on 44 points. But the most important line in 2026 is not the top four: only first and second earn direct promotion, while teams finishing third through sixth enter playoffs for the other two promotion places. In that snapshot, CRB are sixth on 42 points, only two ahead of Operário-PR and Atlético-GO, both on 40.

How the top of the table looks after 26 rounds

The official CBF standings, updated on September 7, show only five points separating the leader from the playoff cutoff. Juventude and Criciúma have 47 points, with Novorizontino immediately behind on 46.

CBF itself noted after the round ended on September 6 that at least 14 clubs were chasing the leading positions. That illustrates how compressed the standings are: 12 points separate first from 14th, with 12 rounds still to play.

Why focusing only on the top four is misleading in 2026

The format has changed. Serie B still has 38 rounds in a double round-robin league, but promotion is no longer simply awarded to the top four. According to the technical documents released by CBF, the champion and runner-up go up directly. Then third play sixth and fourth play fifth over two legs; the winners claim the remaining two places in the 2027 Serie A.

That creates three different lines to monitor. The first is the top two, which means direct promotion. The second is the top six, which determines who at least reaches the playoffs. The top four still helps visualize the leading group, but it is not the promotion cutoff by itself this season.

The gaps that best explain the promotion race

Between 2nd and 3rd: one point

Criciúma have 47 and Novorizontino 46. The boundary between direct promotion and the playoffs is therefore just one point. A single round can reverse that status without either club moving far away from the other.

Between 4th and 5th: zero points

Vila Nova and Fortaleza both have 44 points. So if the question is literally how many points separate the top four from the nearest chaser, the answer is none: the first team outside the top four is level on points with fourth and trails only on tiebreakers.

Between 6th and 7th: two points

This is the most practical line for clubs chasing a place in the decisive phase. CRB have 42; Operário-PR and Atlético-GO have 40. A win for a chaser combined with dropped points by the sixth-placed side can immediately change the top-six composition.

From 6th to 14th: seven points

Sport are four behind CRB; Náutico and Athletic-MG are five back; Goiás and Cuiabá are six behind; São Bernardo are seven back. The group is not uniform, but it explains why a sizeable pack can still look upward without turning every small gap into a guaranteed trend.

A simple map by points bands

  • 47 to 46 points: Juventude, Criciúma and Novorizontino form the group currently holding the two direct promotion places and the first playoff position.
  • 44 to 42 points: Vila Nova, Fortaleza and CRB complete the top six, with small gaps between them.
  • 40 to 38 points: Operário-PR, Atlético-GO and Sport are the nearest challengers to the playoff cutoff.
  • 37 to 35 points: Náutico, Athletic-MG, Goiás, Cuiabá and São Bernardo need to make up five to seven points to reach the current sixth-placed team.

What round 26 changed at the top

The race tightened further. Juventude drew 2-2 with Atlético-GO and moved to 47 points, while Criciúma beat Cuiabá 2-0 to reach the same total. Novorizontino finished only one point behind the leaders. The result is a top section with no comfortable cushion: only five points separate first from sixth.

That does not mean every club has the same chance of promotion. Current points, form, home advantage, upcoming opponents and tiebreakers can all alter the path. The table after 26 rounds measures distance; it should not automatically be converted into a promotion forecast.

What to watch next without turning the table into a prediction

There are 12 rounds left, meaning each club can still contest 36 points. Instead of searching for a “magic” target, it is more useful to track three concrete movements: who enters or remains in the top two, who stays inside the top six, and whether the gap between sixth and the first chaser expands or shrinks.

Tiebreakers also matter. Vila Nova and Fortaleza are already level on points, as are Operário-PR and Atlético-GO. In a compressed table, wins, goal difference and the other criteria in the competition rules can separate teams even when their point totals are identical.

Where to check the official updates

To follow the standings without relying on projections, use the Serie B table on CBF's website. CBF also published a specific recap of round 26 and keeps the technical documents for the 2026 format available. Together, they help separate current position, promotion rules and editorial interpretation.
