Netflix + SEGA: What Is Confirmed for Crazy Taxi, Sonic and Stranger Than Heaven

The multi-title deal already defines formats and some creative talent, but it still gives no release dates for the three adaptations.

Netflix and SEGA's September 14, 2026 announcement confirms a collaboration to adapt properties from the publisher's catalog, but it should not be read as a release calendar. The official statement defines the format and some of the creative talent attached to three projects — Crazy Taxi, Sonic, and STRANGER THAN HEAVEN — without announcing a release date for any of these Netflix productions.

The status of each adaptation

ProjectWhat is confirmedWhat is still undated or undisclosed
Crazy TaxiA feature-film adaptation; it is presented as the first project out of the deal. Dan Gregor and Doug Mand are writing. Neal H. Moritz, Toby Ascher, and Toru Nakahara are among the producers. The announcement gives no release date, filming start, director, or cast.
SonicA new animated series in development with Carlos Stevens and Toru Nakahara, aimed at an upper-preschool audience. The concept is a high-energy comedy with Sonic and his friends as heroes. The statement gives no final title, release date, episode count, or voice cast.
STRANGER THAN HEAVENA live-action film in development based on the RGG Studio game. Toru Nakahara is credited as producer.Netflix says details are under wraps; the announcement gives no release date, director, or film cast.

Crazy Taxi is the most defined project in the deal

In the official Netflix announcement, Crazy Taxi is described as the first project out of the collaboration. The feature already has announced writers: Dan Gregor and Doug Mand, the duo associated with the 2025 reboot of The Naked Gun. Producers include Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher of Original Film, along with Toru Nakahara.

That makes the movie more concrete than a bare statement that a brand is “in development,” but it still does not justify assuming that production is filming or close to release. The statement does not name a director, cast, filming schedule, or release window.

It is also important not to confuse the movie with the new game. SEGA separately announced that Crazy Taxi: World Tour is planned for 2027. That is a video-game release window, not a date for the Netflix film.

Sonic will be a new animated series, not a release date for more Sonic Prime

For Sonic, Netflix and SEGA confirm a new animated series that is still in development with Carlos Stevens and Toru Nakahara. The official description positions it for an “upper pre-school” audience, with comedy, energy, and Sonic and his friends operating as a team of heroes.

The same announcement notes that all three seasons of Sonic Prime are already available on Netflix, but it does not present the new project as a fourth season of Prime. The safe reading is therefore that this is another animated series in development. No final title, episode count, voice cast, or premiere date is given.

STRANGER THAN HEAVEN will get a live-action film, but details are under wraps

The third confirmed project is a live-action STRANGER THAN HEAVEN film, based on the game from RGG Studio, the team known for the Like a Dragon/Yakuza series. Netflix summarizes the setting as the story of a foreigner rising through early-20th-century Japan from poverty to the yakuza underworld and the entertainment business. For the adaptation itself, however, the announcement explicitly says that details remain under wraps.

Toru Nakahara is listed as producer. Beyond that, the September 14 statement does not announce a director, writer, cast, or release date. The same separation from the game matters here: SEGA set the STRANGER THAN HEAVEN game for January 15, 2027, but that date does not apply to the Netflix film.

What the deal confirms — and what it does not

The corporate announcement matters because it turns three SEGA properties into identifiable Netflix projects with formats already defined. It also makes clear that the collaboration is meant to span different styles, including live-action comedy, kids' animation, and live-action crime. What it does not provide is a public production calendar.

  • Confirmed: Crazy Taxi will be a feature film and already has announced writers and producers.
  • Confirmed: Sonic will get a new animated series in development for a young audience.
  • Confirmed: STRANGER THAN HEAVEN will get a live-action film; Toru Nakahara is producer.
  • Not announced in the statement: release dates for any of the three adaptations.
  • Not announced in the statement: filming, season, or production schedules that would indicate when each title will arrive on Netflix.

How to follow future updates without confusing the games and the adaptations

For future news, the safest rule is to check whether a date refers to the Netflix production or the SEGA game. Crazy Taxi: World Tour has a 2027 window and the STRANGER THAN HEAVEN game has a January 15, 2027 release date, but neither milestone was presented as a premiere date for its adaptation.

Likewise, “in development” confirms that a project exists, but it does not mean production has started, filming has been scheduled, or release is near. Until Netflix or SEGA publishes further information, the verifiable picture is straightforward: all three projects are confirmed, their broad formats are known, and the adaptations' release dates were not disclosed in the September 14 announcement.
