The 2026 Brazilian Rapid Chess Championship and Brazilian Blitz Chess Championship will be held in Fortaleza as separate competitions, even though they are promoted together. According to the Brazilian Chess Confederation (CBX), the Rapid event takes place on October 31 and the Blitz event on November 1 at Hotel Beira Mar, jointly organized by CBX and the Ceará Chess Federation (FCX). Official registration closes on October 28, 2026, at 11:59 p.m.

To decide which event to enter, the main differences are the time control and number of rounds: Rapid will have 7 rounds at 10 minutes + 5 seconds increment per move, while Blitz will have 11 rounds at 3 minutes + 2 seconds per move. Both use the Swiss system and are independent for titles, standings, prizes, technical records and rating.

There is also a Rapid + Blitz combo for R$300. At the published prices, buying the two entries separately would cost R$400, so the combo reduces the total by R$100.

Which event fits your playing profile?

The choice is better understood as a difference in time management and decision speed, not as a difference in “level” between the formats. In Rapid, the initial 10 minutes plus a 5-second increment allow more room to calculate variations, reset a plan and recover some clock time after each move. In Blitz, the initial 3 minutes plus a 2-second increment make clock pressure much more constant.

  • Rapid: generally makes more sense for players who prefer a little more calculation per move, want to reduce purely intuitive decisions and are comfortable with short games without going all the way to blitz speed.
  • Blitz: generally suits players who are already used to making very fast decisions, managing critical seconds and maintaining accuracy under intense time pressure.
  • Combo: is the practical choice for players who want to compete for both titles and can reserve both consecutive days. It also costs less than buying the two entries separately.

These are practical selection criteria, not performance guarantees. The better format depends on opening preparation, clock experience and each player's tolerance for time pressure.

Schedule: when to arrive and when play starts

The technical meeting is scheduled for October 30 at 8:00 p.m. online. On October 31, accreditation and on-site confirmation for Rapid begin at 8:30 a.m., with the first round at 10:00 a.m. On November 1, Blitz on-site confirmation is scheduled for 9:30 a.m., rounds begin at 10:00 a.m., and the awards ceremony is planned for 1:00 p.m.

Because tournament times can receive operational adjustments, recheck the event-specific CBX announcement and the regulations close to travel. CBX had already stated in its annual calendar that dates and venues could be adjusted through later announcements, so the event-specific notice published on September 10 is the most current reference for this edition.

How to register by October 28

Registration is completed through the official electronic form. CBX states that the final deadline is October 28, 2026, at 11:59 p.m. The published fees are R$250 for Rapid, R$150 for Blitz and R$300 for the combo.

The form lists payment by Pix and states that registration is confirmed only after the participant's data, payment and conditions in the regulations have been checked. Requested fields include:

  • email and full name;
  • CPF and date of birth;
  • state (UF) and phone/WhatsApp;
  • CBX ID and FIDE ID, if available;
  • chosen event: Rapid, Blitz or combo;
  • registration category;
  • proof of payment, by file link or notice that it will be sent later;
  • acceptance of the regulations and authorization for image and data use for sporting and institutional purposes.

The form also has an optional field for bank details for any eventual prize payment. Before submitting, double-check the CBX ID, chosen event and payment proof, because confirmation depends on verification of those details.

Who can enter and how rating is handled

According to CBX, the competition is open to chess players who are regularly registered with the federation and whose registration and financial status comply with the event requirements and applicable rating rules. For FIDE registration and rating purposes, the announcement says athletes must be listed under the Brazilian flag (BRA) with FIDE.

The main competitive categories are Open/Overall and Women. Women play in the same overall tournament, with a separate women's classification for specific prizes that can be combined with any prize earned in the overall standings.

If there is any uncertainty about registration status, FIDE flag, a legal discount or eligibility for the GM/IM exempt option shown on the form, the safest approach is to confirm the condition in the regulations and with the organizers before paying.

Prize fund and independence of the two events

CBX announced a proposed total cash prize fund of R$9,000, distributed among the top finishers in the Open/Overall standings and the top three women in each event. Rapid and Blitz are independent competitions: one result is not added to the other to determine champion, standings, prizes or rating.

In practical terms, a player who buys the combo is entering two distinct events. Performance, placing and rating changes may therefore differ between the two formats.

Checklist before submitting registration

  1. Confirm that your CBX registration is in good standing.
  2. Choose Rapid, Blitz or the combo based on your profile and availability.

  5. Make the payment according to the form instructions.
  6. Keep the receipt and provide it in the form.
  7. Submit the registration by October 28 at 11:59 p.m.
  8. Recheck the regulations, technical meeting and schedule close to the event.
