NHL 2026-27 expands to 84 games per team: how the schedule changes and why preseason is shorter

The NHL's two extra 2026-27 games are both divisional. See how the 84-game matrix works and why the new CBA shortens preseason.

The NHL is moving from 82 to 84 games per team in 2026-27, but the two additional games are not spread across the league: both are added within each club's own division. In practice, every team will face each of its seven divisional rivals four times — twice at home and twice on the road — eliminating the rotation that had two divisional opponents appearing only three times on the schedule. The change is part of the new NHL-NHLPA collective bargaining agreement and comes with a shorter preseason.

What changes from 82 to 84 games

The two-game increase has a very specific effect. The 2025-26 matrix allocated 26 games to divisional opponents, 24 to the other division in the same conference and 32 to the opposite conference. In 2026-27, the latter two blocks stay the same; the divisional block rises from 26 to 28.

The comparison is reflected in the NHL's official schedule matrices for 2025-26 and 2026-27.

How the 2026-27 matchup matrix works

With eight teams in each division, every club has seven divisional rivals. The new setup is straightforward in that block: four games against each rival, two at home and two on the road, for 28 total. Against the eight clubs in the other division of the same conference, each team still plays three games per opponent, with home and road assignments balancing out across the group. Against the 16 teams in the opposite conference, the format remains two games per opponent, one in each arena.

7 divisional rivals7 × 428
8 teams in the other division of the conference8 × 324
16 teams in the other conference16 × 232

For fans, the most important point is divisional symmetry. In 2025-26, each club played five divisional rivals four times and two divisional rivals only three times. Beginning in 2026-27, all seven divisional opponents appear four times. That gives every divisional rivalry the same number of regular-season meetings and adds one home game and one road game to each team's total.

Why the preseason is shorter

The reduction is the other half of the change negotiated in the new CBA. The regular season gained two games, while the preseason is now capped at four games per club. The NHL says the 2026 exhibition schedule contains 65 games over eight days, from September 19 through September 26, across 36 NHL or neutral-site venues. The regular season begins September 29.

The effect on preparation matters because the reduction is not just a smaller exhibition total. On September 15, the NHL reported that teams will have about one week less to prepare than under the previous setup. For the 10 teams playing on opening night, only 12 days separate the first training-camp practice from the first regular-season game. The same report notes that most clubs previously played six to eight exhibition games.

The new agreement also contains a specific limit: players with at least 100 NHL games of experience may play in no more than two preseason games. That further narrows the window for working veterans into exhibition lineups and changes how coaches distribute the limited game slots.

What changes in roster preparation

  • Less room for evaluation: prospects, professional tryout players and skaters competing for the final roster spots have fewer games to make an impression.
  • More urgency to assemble the main group: coaches have to move earlier toward the lines, pairings and combinations they expect to use when the season starts.
  • Practices matter more: with fewer exhibition games, practices, meetings and special-teams sessions carry more of the burden of installing systems, the power play and the penalty kill.
  • Veterans have fewer tune-up appearances: the two-game preseason limit for players with more than 100 NHL games reduces the runway for a gradual ramp-up.

The result is not that the preseason stops being an evaluation period, but that its priority shifts. With a longer regular-season schedule and a compressed September runway, teams must balance two competing jobs: deciding the final roster spots while also getting the core lineup ready for games that already count in the standings.

Key dates in the transition to 2026-27

DateMilestone
September 17, 2026First training-camp practices referenced by the NHL
September 19Preseason begins
September 26Preseason ends, with 14 games on the final day
September 292026-27 regular season opens
April 10, 2027Final day of the regular season, with all 32 teams in action

The 84-game schedule is the NHL's first of that length since 1993-94. The league has scheduled 1,344 regular-season games in 2026-27. The practical meaning is simpler than the headline number: the two extra games complete a four-game set against every divisional rival, while September preparation is compressed to make room for the new structure.
