The Rays and Yankees will play four games in three days at Yankee Stadium from Sept. 22 through Sept. 24, 2026, with the AL East race at stake. The situation entering the series is straightforward: Tampa Bay is 95-60, New York is 89-66, six games back, and each team has seven regular-season games remaining. According to MLB, one Rays win in this series clinches the division. For the Yankees, the only way to reach the end of Sept. 24 with a chance to pass Tampa Bay is to win all four games.
Schedule for the four Rays vs. Yankees games
The series opens with a separate-admission doubleheader on Sept. 22. The first game is a makeup of the May 23 matchup that was postponed because of the weather forecast. The times below follow MLB's official schedule and include Brasília time, which is one hour ahead of U.S. Eastern Time on these dates.
| Date | Game | ET | Brasília time | Venue |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sept. 22 | Rays @ Yankees, Game 1 | 1:05 p.m. | 2:05 p.m. | Yankee Stadium |
| Sept. 22 | Rays @ Yankees, Game 2 | 7:05 p.m. | 8:05 p.m. | Yankee Stadium |
| Sept. 23 | Rays @ Yankees | 7:05 p.m. | 8:05 p.m. | Yankee Stadium |
| Sept. 24 | Rays @ Yankees | 7:05 p.m. | 8:05 p.m. | Yankee Stadium |
As usual, game times and broadcasts are subject to change. The official MLB schedule is the reference for the latest programming. The reason for the first game of the doubleheader is documented in the May 23 postponement notice.
Where the AL East stands before the series
| Team | Wins | Losses | Pct. | Position |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tampa Bay Rays | 95 | 60 | .613 | Leader |
| New York Yankees | 89 | 66 | .574 | 6.0 games back |
Both clubs have already secured postseason berths. What remains at stake is their route through October. If Tampa Bay closes out the AL East, it also secures the No. 1 seed in the American League, a bye through the Wild Card Series and home-field advantage in the ALDS and, if it advances, the ALCS. For New York, losing the division race means proceeding through the Wild Card path. MLB details those implications in its official series preview.
What the Rays need to win the division
The Rays need to win only one of the four games in the Bronx. That is enough because a Tampa Bay win is also a direct Yankees loss. With the current six-game lead and only seven games remaining for both teams, that result eliminates New York's ability to finish ahead.
In practical terms, the Rays' first win from Sept. 22 through Sept. 24 ends the AL East race immediately. Tampa Bay would not need to wait for the results of the final weekend.
What the Yankees need to keep the race alive
The Yankees need a four-game sweep. Any loss in the series mathematically hands the division to the Rays. If New York wins all four games, Tampa Bay would move to 95-64 and New York to 93-66, leaving a two-game gap with three games remaining for each club.
Under that scenario, Tampa Bay would finish the regular season at Philadelphia from Sept. 25 through Sept. 27, while the Yankees would host Baltimore on the same dates. Only then could the division race reach the final weekend.
The tiebreaker can change hands during the series
Before the opener, Tampa Bay leads the season series 6-3. MLB uses head-to-head record as the first tiebreaker and no longer plays an extra tiebreaker game, the former Game 163. If the Rays win at least one game in the Bronx, they also clinch the season series. If the Yankees sweep all four, New York flips the season series to 7-6 and would own the tiebreaker if the clubs finish with identical records.
For a two-team tie, the order begins with head-to-head record, then intradivision record, intraleague record and additional criteria. The complete rules are in MLB's tiebreaker guide. The official 2026 playoff picture lists the Rays vs. Yankees season series at 6-3 before these four games.
If the Yankees sweep, what are the scenarios for the final three games?
The scenarios below follow arithmetically from the current records, a hypothetical New York sweep and the fact that the Yankees would then own the head-to-head tiebreaker 7-6.
- Rays go 2-1 or 3-0 against the Phillies: Tampa Bay wins the division regardless of what New York does against Baltimore.
- Rays go 1-2: the Yankees must go 3-0 against the Orioles. Both teams would finish 96-66, and New York would take the division on the head-to-head tiebreaker.
- Rays go 0-3: the Yankees need at least a 2-1 finish. At 2-1, both clubs would finish 95-67 and New York would win the tiebreaker; at 3-0, the Yankees would finish 96-66 and take the lead outright.
- Yankees do not sweep the Sept. 22-24 series: the scenarios above disappear because any Rays win already clinches the AL East.
What changes from game to game
The first game on Sept. 22 can end the division race immediately. If the Yankees win it, the second game of the doubleheader carries the same condition. The same pattern applies on Sept. 23 and Sept. 24: as long as New York remains unbeaten in the series, the race stays alive; the moment Tampa Bay wins a game, the AL East is decided.
That is why the four scheduled games do not create a symmetrical situation. The Rays arrive in the Bronx with four chances to get the one win they need. The Yankees arrive with no margin for a loss.
