Two Sergipe fans, four games for each side and very different objectives. After 15 rounds of the 2026 Series C, Itabaiana occupies 17th place with 17 points, while Confiança is 20th, with 12. Ferroviária, eighth placed, marks its entry into the G-8 today with 23 points; At the bottom, Barra is 18th with 15, followed by Anápolis and Confiança, both with 12.
As there are still four matches remaining, there are 12 points available. This takes Itabaiana's ceiling to 29 and Confiança's to 24. The mathematics, however, says more when these numbers are crossed with the format of the competition: the first eight advance to the second phase and only the last two are relegated to Series D in 2027.
| Club | Position | Points | Distance to the current G-8 | Situation regarding Z-2 | End ceiling |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Itabaiana | 17th | 17 | 6 points | 5 points above 19th | 29 |
| Trust | 20th | 12 | 11 points | inside the Z-2; 3 behind 18th | 24 |
These distances are a snapshot of round 15, not fixed targets. Ferroviária, Barra, Anápolis and all other competitors also have four games to change the cuts.
What victory, draw or defeat already changes in the 16th round
The first round of this sequence is especially enlightening for Confiança. As eight teams already have at least 23 points, any result that leaves the club's maximum possible below this mark mathematically ends the dispute for the G-8.
| Result in the 16th round | Itabaiana after Caxias | Itabaiana Ceiling | Confidence after Paysandu | Trust Ceiling |
| Victory | 20 | 29 | 15 | 24 |
| Draw | 18 | 27 | 13 | 22 |
| Defeat | 17 | 26 | 12 | 21 |
For Confiança, therefore, there is only one mathematical route to continue dreaming of the G-8: beat Paysandu and then also win the other three matches. A draw in Belém limits the team to 22 points; a defeat, to 21. In both cases, it would be impossible to reach any of the eight clubs that have already reached 23.
This does not mean that four wins would guarantee classification. With 24 points, Confiança would still need a very broad combination of stumbles from teams that are currently ahead of them. In practice, permanence is the objective that offers a much more concrete route.
For Itabaiana, the scenario is less extreme. Even a defeat against Caxias would still leave a ceiling of 26 points. The problem is that each lost point increases the dependence of those who already occupy or pursue the G-8.
Itabaiana needs at least six points to reach today's cutoff
Feroviária's 23 points establish an objective reference: Itabaiana needs to add at least six of the remaining 12 points just to reach this mark.
If you score six points, you will end up with 23. This can happen, for example, with two wins and two losses or with one win and three draws. Reaching 23, however, does not mean joining the G-8. Itabaiana could end up tied with their opponents and depend on the tiebreaker criteria, in addition to needing the line not to rise.
With seven points, it would reach 24; with eight, to 25; with nine, to 26; with ten, to 27; and with four wins it would reach 29. The higher this total, the lower the number of external combinations needed, but there is currently no number below the ceiling that can be treated as an early guarantee of classification.
More immediate competitors help show why. In addition to the three clubs with 23 points between sixth and eighth — Paysandu, Maringá and Ferroviária —, Ypiranga, Caxias and Floresta appear with 21. Amazonas and Figueirense have 20. There are, therefore, several teams between Itabaiana and the G-8.
The 16th round itself offers a direct opportunity: Caxias has 21 points. If Itabaiana wins at Mendonção, it goes up to 20 and leaves the opponent at 21, reducing the difference between the two from four to one point.
Permanence of Itabaiana passes through Barra and Maranhão
The dispute over the G-8 does not eliminate the need to look down. Itabaiana has a five-point advantage over Anápolis and Confiança, who open Z-2 with 12, but is just two points above Barra, in 18th place.
This is why the 17th and 18th rounds can be worth more than three common points. Itabaiana visits Barra on August 16th and Maranhão on August 23rd. Barra is today the last team outside the drop zone; Maranhão is immediately above Itabaiana, with 18 points.
Winning confrontations of this type has a double effect: it increases Sergipe's score and prevents a direct opponent from scoring. Depending on what happens in the 16th round, the duel with Barra could open up an important margin for staying. Against Maranhão, a victory could also bring Itabaiana closer to the mid-range that still looks towards the G-8.
Confidence needs to go beyond at least two clubs
To remain in Series C, Confiança does not necessarily need to reach 16th place. As only the last two will be relegated, just finish the first phase in 18th or above.
Today, the two closest targets are precisely Anápolis, with the same 12 points, and Barra, with 15. The nominal distance to the first position outside the Z-2 is three points, but simply reaching 15 does not solve the situation: Barra can also score and ties in the classification lead to tiebreaker criteria.
The calendar offers Confiança a rare chance to directly influence the score of one of these rivals. In the 18th round, the team hosts Anápolis at Batistão. It is the confrontation in which a victory is worth not only three own points, but also the certainty that a direct competitor will not score.
Against Barra, there is no more direct confrontation in this first phase. Therefore, Confiança needs to follow the results of the Santa Catarina club round by round. The same reasoning goes for any team that falls close to the zone during the final sequence.
The four final games of Confiança and Itabaiana
The CBF scheduled the 16th round from August 8th. The Sergipe fans take the field on Sunday and Monday: Itabaiana x Caxias will be on August 9th, at 6:30 pm, and Paysandu x Confiança closes the round on August 10th, at 8 pm.
| Round | Itabaiana | Trust | Reading the scenario |
| 16th | Itabaiana x Caxias — 09/08, 6:30 pm | Paysandu x Confiança — 10/08, 8pm | Itabaiana faces a close competitor from the G-8; Confidence needs to win to maintain any mathematical chance of classification |
| 17th | Barra x Itabaiana — 16/08, 6:30 pm | Confiança x Maringá — 16/08, 4pm | direct confrontation of Itabaiana in the lower part; Confiança receives a team today within the G-8 |
| 18th | Maranhão x Itabaiana — 23/08, 6:30 pm | Confiança x Anápolis — 23/08, 4pm | two games with a direct impact on the fight against relegation |
| 19th | Itabaiana x Botafogo-PB — 29/08, 5pm | Ferroviária x Confiança — 29/08, 5pm | last simultaneous round against opponents that currently occupy the G-8 |
The CBF's detailed table also confirms that all games in the 19th round are scheduled for August 29th, at 5pm, which reduces the possibility of a team entering the field already knowing the result of their direct competitors.
What to watch out for in the 16th round
- Itabaiana x Caxias: victory takes Itabaiana to 20 points and keeps Caxias at 21, directly shortening the gap to a competitor at the top.
- Paysandu x Confiança: only victory keeps the G-8 mathematically possible for Confiança. For permanence, any point helps, but the effect needs to be compared to the Z-2 results.
- Anápolis x Guarani: the result is of direct interest to Confiança. The less Anápolis scores, the better for the attempt to exit the zone.
- Ituano x Barra: Barra is today the first team outside the Z-2. A stumble keeps the line closer to Confiança and is also of interest to Itabaiana.
- Figueirense x Ferroviária, Maringá x Amazonas and Ypiranga x Floresta: these are matches between teams that are ahead of Itabaiana or close to the G-8 cutoff. The results could significantly change the actual distance to eighth place.
The final stretch, therefore, has two different readings in Sergipe. Itabaiana can still finish with 29 points and maintains a mathematical route to the G-8, but it needs to add up and hope for a favorable combination in the block that today goes from 20 to 23 points. At the same time, it faces Barra and Maranhão in games that could practically lead to its permanence.
For Confiança, the urgency is greater. The club is three points behind first place outside of Z-2 and needs to overcome at least two teams to escape. The direct confrontation with Anápolis could be decisive, while Barra's results will have almost as much weight as the games themselves.
The table must be recalculated after each round. A single weekend can eliminate the possibility of G-8 for one of the clubs, change the standing line or turn the following clashes into direct decisions.
