Part 2 of One Hundred Years of Solitude advances precisely to the section in which the Buendía family becomes more difficult to follow. The names are repeated, the twins occupy the center of the story and characters that seemed to be on the side start to connect one generation to the next.
Seven episodes were released by Netflix on August 5, 2026. The final episode, presented as a special with a length close to that of a feature film, premieres on August 26. This guide reveals relationships and characters necessary to follow part 2, but does not describe their fate or open the genealogical branch directly linked to the ending.
The starting point for understanding part 2
The most useful rule is this: the main branch of the second part does not continue directly through the sons of Colonel Aureliano Buendía. He goes by Arcadio, son of José Arcadio and Pilar Ternera.
Arcadio and Santa Sofía de la Piedad are the parents of Remedios the Beautiful and the twins José Arcadio Segundo and Aureliano Segundo. It is these two brothers who lead the transition to the new generations.
Aureliano Segundo links himself to Fernanda del Carpio, while José Arcadio Segundo assumes a more direct relationship with Macondo's transformations. The official synopsis highlights the railway, the opening of the city to the outside world and the arrival of the banana trade as central elements of this new phase.
Buendía family tree by generation
Mild spoiler warning: the tree below reveals marriages, children, and family ties featured in the novel. It does not reveal deaths, individual fates or the relationship leading up to the final episode.
1st generation — the founders
José Arcadio Buendía + Úrsula Iguarán
Biological children:
- José Arcadio;
- Aureliano Buendía, who becomes Colonel Aureliano Buendía;
- Amaranta.
Rebeca is raised as a daughter of the house, but does not belong to the Buendía biological lineage. This difference matters because she marries José Arcadio, son of the founders.
2nd generation — the children of the founders
José Arcadio + Pilar Ternera
- Arcadio.
José Arcadio marries Rebeca, but Arcadio is the son of his previous relationship with Pilar Ternera.
Colonel Aureliano Buendía + Pilar Ternera
- Aureliano José.
The colonel also has 17 other children, all called Aureliano, with different women. They form a numerous side branch, but are not the main genealogical line leading to subsequent generations.
Amaranta
- No descendants.
3rd generation — the Arcadio branch
Arcadio + Santa Sofía de la Piedad
- Remedios, the Beautiful;
- José Arcadio Segundo;
- Aureliano Segundo.
This is the most important point in the tree for part 2. José Arcadio Segundo and Aureliano Segundo are twin brothers and grandchildren of José Arcadio, the eldest son of the founders.
4th generation — the twins and the new family line
José Arcadio Segundo
- No children;
- is the twin associated with the opening of Macondo to the outside world and the Melquíades manuscripts in the official presentation of part 2.
Aureliano Segundo + Fernanda del Carpio
- Renata Remedios, called Meme;
- José Arcadio;
- Amaranta Úrsula.
Aureliano Segundo also maintains a relationship with Petra Cotes, but the couple does not form a new branch of descendants in the novel.
Remedios the Beautiful
- No descendants.
5th generation — where this guide stops
Meme, José Arcadio and Amaranta Úrsula are brothers and children of Aureliano Segundo and Fernanda del Carpio.
The subsequent generation is born from this nucleus, but its composition directly interferes with the understanding of closure. Therefore, the rest of the tree was omitted. The series is presented by Netflix as a story that spans seven generations; here, the founding couple is counted as the first.
Who is who among the repeated names
The qualifiers used below — “founder,” “twin,” or “son of Fernanda” — are resources of this guide. They are not part of the characters' official names.
| Name found | Who is it | Clue to avoid confusion |
|---|---|---|
| José Arcadio Buendía | Founder of Macondo and husband of Úrsula | He is the only José Arcadio regularly called by his full name, with Buendía |
| José Arcadio | Eldest son of the founders | He is the brother of Colonel Aureliano and father of Arcadio |
| Arcadio | Son of José Arcadio and Pilar Ternera | He is the father of the twins in part 2 |
| José Arcadio Segundo | Son of Arcadio and twin brother of Aureliano Segundo | The “Second” is part of the name by which it is known |
| José Arcadio, son of Fernanda | Son of Aureliano Segundo and Fernanda del Carpio | Belongs to the generation of Meme and Amaranta Úrsula |
| Colonel Aureliano Buendía | Son of the founders and leader of the liberal wars | He is the central Aureliano from the first part |
| Aureliano José | Son of the colonel with Pilar Ternera | “José” comes after Aureliano |
| Aureliano Segundo | Son of Arcadio and twin of José Arcadio Segundo | Marries Fernanda del Carpio |
| The 17 Aurelianos | Colonel's children with different women | They form a lateral group; there are not 17 versions of the same character |
Repetition is not an oversight. The novel uses a limited set of names to reinforce the sense that behaviors, conflicts, and forms of loneliness reappear across generations.. Full names help, but they don't serve as absolute personality rules — the twins themselves complicate any attempt to separate the Buendías into fixed patterns.
The five characters that support part 2
Úrsula Iguarán
Úrsula remains the great reference of continuity. She knows the origins of the family, observes the repetition of names and tries to prevent younger generations from repeating previous mistakes.
Screenwriter Camila Brugés explained that one of the adaptation's decisions was to give Úrsula a stronger point of view, although the story remains collective. In the series, she helps to articulate the passage of time and the relationship between the different family branches.
Colonel Aureliano Buendía
The colonel connects the two parties. He belongs to the generation of the founders' children, but the consequences of their wars and decisions continue to shape Macondo as the twins take on greater space.
José Arcadio Segundo
He is the son of Arcadio and Santa Sofía de la Piedad. The Netflix synopsis associates it with the project of connecting Macondo to the outside world, fulfilling an old desire of José Arcadio Buendía.
To remember: José Arcadio Segundo is the twin linked to the collective changes in Macondo.
Aureliano Segundo
He is also the son of Arcadio and Santa Sofía. His marriage to Fernanda del Carpio establishes the family line that leads to Meme, José Arcadio and Amaranta Úrsula.
To remember: Aureliano Segundo is the twin linked to the new Buendía household.
Fernanda del Carpio
Fernanda arrives from outside Macondo and marries Aureliano Segundo. It introduces another family formation, new customs and a different conception of order within the house.
The third episode released on August 5th bears his name, a sign of his importance for the reorganization of the family at this stage.
Book and series: what changes without revealing the ending
- The events are reorganized in a more chronological way. The novel moves forward and backward in time, repeats episodes and anticipates destinies. The script team needed to order events and build more linear dramatic arcs for television.
- Úrsula gains a more visible structural function. The adaptation maintains the collective character of the work, but uses the matriarch as one of the main points of guidance between generations.
- The narrator's voice was preserved within limits. The screenwriters initially considered dispensing with it, but concluded that part of the novel's identity would disappear without this voice. The narration should not only serve to summarize time jumps or explain the action.
- The passage of time needs to appear on the screen. The book can span years in a few sentences. The series translates this transformation through the characters, the Buendía house and a Macondo that receives a railway, electricity and other changes.
- The conclusion gained a separate format. Instead of releasing eight identical episodes, Netflix made seven chapters available on August 5th and reserved a final special for August 26th, described by the company as close to a feature film.
How to follow along without consulting the tree for each scene
When a familiar name appears, look for the complement first:
- Buendía usually indicates the founder or the colonel;
- José after Aureliano identifies Aureliano José;
- Second identifies the twins of Arcadio's generation;
- Meme is Renata Remedios' nickname;
- Fernanda is the wife of Aureliano Segundo, not a descendant of the founders.
It also helps to follow the story by cores. The colonel represents the continuity of wars; José Arcadio Segundo follows the changes in Macondo; Aureliano Segundo and Fernanda lead the youngest family branch; Úrsula connects them all.
Open this tree while watching and, when you need to organize events beyond kinship, go to the plot map. The objective is not to memorize seven generations, but to know which branch each character appears in.
