Ultimate Championship 2026: prize money by place and why there will be no medals

See the prize-money scale by place, how relay amounts are listed, and why World Athletics replaced medals with a trophy-and-bracelet system.

The 2026 World Athletics Ultimate Championship will have a total US$10 million prize pot, described by World Athletics as the largest ever offered at a single track and field event. The individual scale starts with US$150,000 for the champion, followed by US$75,000 for second and US$40,000 for third, and runs down to US$2,000 for 16th place. In the relays, the official table ranges from US$80,000 for first to US$8,000 for eighth.

The other major change concerns the symbol of achievement. There will be no medals. World Athletics has chosen to concentrate the champion’s physical award in a trophy, while every participating athlete receives a personalised bracelet that serves as a participation token. For the winner, that bracelet fits into the trophy and completes the piece.

2026 Ultimate Championship prize money: quick answer

  • Total prize pot: US$10 million across the championship.
  • Individual event champion: US$150,000.
  • Individual runner-up: US$75,000.
  • Individual third place: US$40,000.
  • Lowest published individual tier: US$2,000 for 16th place.
  • Relays: the published table ranges from US$80,000 for first to US$8,000 for eighth.
  • Medals: none will be awarded. The trophy is reserved for champions, while participants receive a personalised bracelet.

The championship takes place in Budapest from 11 to 13 September 2026. To see why some events have eight athletes while others begin with 16, read Outra Arena’s guide to the format, schedule and 28 finals of the Ultimate Championship. The lane draft, jump-off and 8–8–6–4 rules are covered in a separate technical guide.

World Athletics says every athlete who lines up in Budapest will be financially rewarded. The list down to 16th is the maximum published individual scale, but it should not be multiplied mechanically across all 26 individual events: the Ultimate uses different field sizes, from eight to 16 athletes depending on the discipline and its progression format.

8thUS$8,000

The programme includes two mixed relays, the 4x100m and 4x400m. The public prize-money release lists one amount for each relay placing. As of 3 September 2026, that publication did not explain how each amount would be divided among the athletes on the relay team. It would therefore be unsafe to treat the US$80,000 first-place figure as an individual payment to each runner.

How to read the US$10 million total

The US$10 million figure is the championship-wide prize pot, not the reward for a single event. The Ultimate has 28 finals — 26 individual events and two mixed relays — and World Athletics describes the fund as a record for one track and field event. US$150,000 is the top individual tier, with progressively smaller amounts paid for lower places.

It is also important not to add the full 16-place scale as though every discipline had 16 paid positions. Some track events begin with two eight-athlete semifinals, while the 1500m, 5000m, relays and field events start much closer to or directly at the final. The size and progression of each field determine which finishing places exist.

Why the Ultimate Championship will have no medals

The absence of medals is deliberate. When World Athletics revealed the trophy system on 1 September, it said the Ultimate concept is built around identifying one champion in each discipline. Sebastian Coe explained that distributing traditional physical awards to the top three did not fit that central idea, so the organisation chose to reserve the trophy for the winner.

That does not remove the financial reward for second, third or the other published places. The change affects the ceremonial object: the prize-money ladder remains, but there are no gold, silver or bronze medals.

What athletes receive instead of a medal

Every athlete who competes in the inaugural edition will receive a personalised bracelet. The athlete’s name is engraved on the outside and the official event name on the inside. World Athletics describes the bracelet as a participation token recognising the status of the elite athletes selected for the championship.

Champions also receive a dedicated trophy. It is designed with a recessed space into which the winner’s bracelet fits, completing the object. World Athletics says the design evokes a stone sculpture and the idea of “carving your name in history”, with elements inspired by the Ultimate symbol and gold detailing.

The idea of creating an object that could only be completed by the champion’s own token came from Noah Lyles, named Ultimate MC and Creative Adviser. Hungarian designers, jewellers and sculptors produced the pieces.

What do second and third place receive?

They receive the prize money attached to their finishing place and the same participation bracelet given to the other competitors. The trophy belongs to the champion. The Ultimate therefore separates two kinds of recognition: financial rewards remain tiered by result, while the main physical symbol of the title is concentrated on the winner.

There will be no traditional medal ceremony either

The trophy presentation is designed to happen within the competition environment itself. According to World Athletics, after winning an event the champion will take the trophy from a plinth at the event site. The “Trophy Moment” will use video, sound and fireworks; the athlete will then complete a lap of honour and follow a Champion’s Pathway toward the television mixed zone while carrying the trophy.

This is a change in presentation, not in sporting result. Places are still determined by each event’s rules, but the ceremony has been redesigned to give the new championship its own identity.
