Champions League, Europa League and Conference League: what happens when a Portuguese club is eliminated in qualifying?

See which competition and round a Portuguese club enters after elimination in UEFA qualifying or the play-offs in 2026/27.

A Portuguese club eliminated in the preliminary stages of UEFA competition does not always have the same destination. In the 2026/27 season, UEFA connects the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League through a transfer matrix: in certain rounds, the losing club drops into the competition below; in others, it enters directly at a later stage; and in the Conference League, elimination means the end of the European campaign.

The rule does not depend on the club being Portuguese. The destination is determined by the competition, the qualifying path and the round in which the club is eliminated. That is why two Portuguese clubs can have different outcomes even if they lose in the same week.

The rule in one sentence

  • Champions League: elimination in qualifying can lead to the Europa League or, in the first qualifying round of the champions path, directly to the Conference League.
  • Europa League: elimination in qualifying leads to the Conference League, with the entry round determined by where the defeat occurred.
  • Conference League: there is no lower UEFA club competition. A team that loses a qualifying tie or the play-off is out of European competition for the season.

The official basis is Article 15.03 of the 2026/27 Champions League regulations, which sets out the transfer table between the three competitions.

Why does the Champions League have two paths?

Champions League qualifying separates clubs into the champions path and the league path. The first is for domestic champions that do not enter the league phase directly. The second is for clubs qualifying through league positions in associations with multiple Champions League places.

This distinction changes what happens after a defeat. In the champions path, losing in the first qualifying round does not send a club to the Europa League: it enters the second qualifying round of the Conference League. From the second qualifying round onward, defeats feed into the Europa League. In the league path, clubs eliminated in the second qualifying round enter the Europa League third qualifying round, while clubs eliminated in the third qualifying round or play-off enter the Europa League league phase directly.

In the Europa League, each lost round maps to a Conference League stage

The logic is more linear. A team eliminated in the Europa League first qualifying round enters the Conference League second qualifying round. A team eliminated in the second round enters the Conference League third round. A team eliminated in the third round enters the Conference League play-off. Finally, a team that loses the Europa League play-off receives a place in the Conference League league phase.

UEFA summarised this mechanism when explaining 2026/27 qualifying: teams eliminated in the Champions League and Europa League qualifying rounds received another opportunity in the competitions below, while teams beaten in the Champions League and Europa League play-offs moved directly into the Europa League and Conference League league phases respectively. The round-by-round detail appears in UEFA's official Europa League qualifying guide.

What if the club is already in the Conference League?

The Conference League is the final competition in this sequence. A defeat in its qualifying phase does not transfer the club anywhere else. Whether the loss comes in the first, second or third qualifying round, or in the play-off, the team ends its European campaign for the season. UEFA's official 2026/27 Conference League qualifying guide confirms that play-off losers were eliminated from the competition.

How the system applied to Portuguese clubs in 2026/27

Portugal's entrants provide practical examples. Porto and Sporting CP reached the Champions League league phase directly, so they did not go through qualifying. Torreense entered the Europa League league phase directly. Benfica and Braga, however, had qualifying routes.

Benfica, third in Portugal the previous season, began the Europa League in the second qualifying round. They beat St. Gallen, Hearts and Aarhus to reach the league phase. Had Benfica lost to St. Gallen, they would have entered the Conference League third qualifying round. Had they lost to Hearts, they would have moved into the Conference League play-off. Had they lost to Aarhus in the Europa League play-off, they would have entered the Conference League league phase directly. The results and route are recorded in UEFA's official qualifying record.

Braga, fourth in Portugal, entered the Conference League play-off and beat Austria Wien. At that point there was no safety net: a defeat would have ended Braga's European campaign. UEFA lists Braga among the clubs that reached the Conference League league phase through qualifying.

What to check before applying the map to another season

The overall structure is set by the regulations for each edition, but the access list can be adjusted before the season because of titleholder places, domestic competition outcomes, European Performance Spots and other rebalancing effects. UEFA's regulations provide for a circular confirming the final adapted access list.

For a specific case, four facts are therefore required: the competition of entry, qualifying path, entry round and elimination round. Once those are known, the transfer table gives the destination regardless of the club's nationality.

Quick examples

  • A Portuguese club loses in the Europa League second qualifying round: it enters the Conference League third qualifying round.
  • A Portuguese club loses in the Europa League third qualifying round: it enters the Conference League play-off.
  • A Portuguese club loses the Europa League play-off: it enters the Conference League league phase.
  • A Portuguese club loses the Champions League play-off: it enters the Europa League league phase.
  • A Portuguese club loses the Conference League play-off: it is out of European competition.

In short, there is no single answer to "the club lost in qualifying, what happens now?". In the 2026/27 structure, the outcome is a function of the competition, path and round. The safest way to follow a Portuguese club is to cross-check the season's access list with the transfer table in the official regulations.
