Maracanã is preparing a special operation to recover its pitch after the NFL game between the Baltimore Ravens and Dallas Cowboys, scheduled for September 27, 2026. The priority is to use the football-free window that begins immediately after the event and have the field ready to host Fluminense vs Coritiba, scheduled for October 8. Stadium management acknowledges that it cannot know in advance exactly how much damage the American football game will cause, so it is working with options ranging from localized repairs to a complete turf replacement.
How much time is available to recover the pitch
The calendar leaves roughly ten working days for intervention between the end of the NFL event and the eve of football's return to the stadium. UOL Esporte reported that the emergency plan includes larger crews and doubled work shifts. The next match scheduled at Maracanã is Fluminense vs Coritiba on October 8.
That window is short for a deep renovation. A full replacement of the pitch could take up to 12 days, according to UOL's reporting. The final decision therefore depends on the field's condition after the NFL game, the state of the soil and, above all, the weather in the following days.
What will happen immediately after the NFL game
The operation is designed to start as soon as the event ends. The plan described by management and reported by the media includes:
- a rapid assessment of the most affected areas, to decide where sod slabs or rolls must be replaced;
- doubled shifts and overnight work, reducing idle time between stages;
- additional staff, with Maracanã's own team working alongside Greenleaf employees, who are responsible for pitch maintenance;
- immediate partial replacements in areas that do not respond to conventional treatment;
- intensive maintenance, including fertilization, ventilation and artificial lighting already used in the stadium's routine care.
Maracanã CEO Fred Nantes said it is not possible to guarantee in advance how the pitch will react to the event, but said management is working so the field will be fit for Fluminense's next home match. That represents an operational expectation that the pitch can be used, not a guarantee that its appearance or playing quality will be ideal.
A full turf replacement is still being considered
In addition to localized repairs, management is studying whether to replace the entire turf starting September 28. Reserve fields are being grown at a farm in Saquarema, in the state of Rio de Janeiro, and could supply the material. The option, however, faces two practical constraints.
The first is time. A full installation may take up to 12 days, while the window before Fluminense vs Coritiba is shorter. The second is weather. ge reported that the reserve grass must be dry before it can be harvested in rolls and transported. A run of rainy days could prevent that operation and keep the plan focused on partial repairs.
Why rain matters so much to the decision
Stadium management attributes part of the pitch deterioration in 2026 to the combination of heavy use, high moisture, temperatures above the seasonal average and limited recovery time. In a September presentation, the consortium said the share of matches played with rain on the day of the game or during the previous 24 hours increased from 20% in 2025 to 46% in 2026.
When the soil is waterlogged, heavy machinery cannot enter without risking further marks on the surface. That limits correction work precisely when the window between events is small. Maracanã also said it will reach the end of September with 58 matches played during the year and that the concession contract requires at least 70 matches annually, according to figures presented by the consortium itself and reported by ge.
Maracanã is also trying to reduce the impact before the NFL game
Post-event recovery is not the only front. Before the game, Maracanã sought information from the team at Neo Química Arena about care measures used after previous American football games. Because the two stadiums use different grass species, management said it does not intend simply to copy the same protocol.
Another precaution concerns field paint. An NFL field receives sport-specific markings, including yard lines, end zones and event branding. According to ge, management planned to test the paint and removal product first in a nursery area outside the main field to see how the grass reacts before application.
When the NFL game takes place and what comes next
| Date | Event | Effect on the schedule |
|---|---|---|
| 09/27/2026 | Baltimore Ravens vs Dallas Cowboys, NFL Rio Game | Event that triggers the emergency recovery operation |
| 09/28 to 10/07 | Main maintenance window | Period for repairs, partial replacements and a possible broader turf replacement |
| 10/08/2026 | Fluminense vs Coritiba | First football match scheduled at the stadium after the NFL game |
The NFL confirms that the Ravens and Cowboys will play at Maracanã on September 27 at 5:25 p.m. Brasília time. From a maintenance perspective, the key point is that football returns shortly afterward, leaving little room for a major intervention.
What to expect from the pitch on October 8
The safest statement at this point is that management plans to provide a usable field for Fluminense vs Coritiba. There is no basis to say the pitch will be fully recovered or visually uniform, because the outcome will depend on the event's damage, the grass's response to treatment and the amount of rain during the maintenance window.
If the damage is localized, the likely priority will be partial replacement and intensive treatment. If the condition is more severe and the weather is favorable, a complete replacement could return to consideration. The operation is therefore an adaptive plan: the maintenance team will decide the depth of the intervention after diagnosing the field once the NFL game is over.
The long-term solution is scheduled for December
Regardless of what happens between September and October, Maracanã has already announced a structural change for the end of the season. After the Brazilian Championship, the stadium intends to replace the current Bermuda Celebration grass with Celebration Hybrid, a variety management describes as more resistant and faster to recover, including under colder and shaded conditions.
That December replacement is separate from the emergency post-NFL operation. Until then, the goal is to keep the field functional through intensive maintenance, targeted repairs and decisions conditioned by the calendar and the weather.
