Rio Rotativo Digital: where the 1,600 new spaces are, how to pay with Jaé and the 10-hour rule

The expansion that began on September 16 brings Rio Rotativo Digital to Urca, new streets in Centro and another stretch of the Barra waterfront. See the covered areas, how to activate parking in Jaé and how the new 10-hour limit works.

Since September 16, 2026, Rio Rotativo Digital has included about 1,600 new parking spaces in Urca, Centro and Barra da Tijuca. At the same time, the maximum stay in digital parking spaces increased from six to ten hours across the city. The fee remains R$ 2 for each two-hour period.

For drivers, the change has two practical effects: there are new stretches where payment must be made through the Jaé app, and it is now possible to buy up to five consecutive two-hour periods in the same space. City Hall says the expansion brings the system to about 5,600 parking spaces in Rio.

Where the new Rio Rotativo Digital spaces are

City Hall's official announcement identifies three expansion areas. It gives an approximate total of 1,600 new spaces but does not break that number down among Urca, Centro and Barra. The safest reference for drivers is therefore the on-site signage and the service map in Jaé or on the official Rio Rotativo Digital page.

Before this expansion, the system was already operating around Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas, along the Leme, Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon and São Conrado waterfronts, on part of Barra between Praia dos Amores and Praça do Ó, and in Tijuca. The Municipal Department of Transportation maintains a map of active areas and notes that outside the demarcated zones, the parking rules that previously applied at the location remain in force when applicable.

How to pay for Rio Rotativo Digital with Jaé

Payment is made through the Jaé app. The official service page says the parking amount is deducted from the Jaé digital wallet, which can be topped up by Pix or credit card. Transit voucher funds cannot be used to pay for parking.

  1. Park in a space marked as Rio Rotativo Digital.
  2. Open the Jaé app and select Rio Rotativo.
  3. Check the address detected automatically by GPS. If necessary, adjust the location to match where the vehicle is parked.
  4. Enter the vehicle's license plate.
  5. Select the desired parking period.
  6. Complete the purchase using the balance in the Jaé digital wallet. The wallet can be topped up by Pix or credit card.

Rio Rotativo Digital spaces are also displayed on the Jaé app map, which helps drivers confirm whether a street is covered. Purchases and renewals are digital, so there is no need to return to the vehicle while the parking period can still be renewed.

How the new 10-hour limit works

The rule took effect across the Rio Rotativo Digital network on September 16. Each period still costs R$ 2 and covers two hours. Drivers can buy up to five consecutive periods, for a total of ten hours in the same space.

Periods purchasedTotal timeTotal cost
12 hoursR$ 2
24 hoursR$ 4
36 hoursR$ 6
48 hoursR$ 8
510 hoursR$ 10

After reaching ten hours, official guidance is to wait one hour before parking again in the same area. The longer limit does not turn the space into unrestricted parking: use still requires the purchase of valid periods and remains subject to rotation rules.

Can a parking attendant take payment?

No. Accredited parking attendants may guide drivers and support the operation, but they are not authorized to collect money for parking. Rio Rotativo Digital payments must be made exclusively through Jaé.

The app also has a channel for reporting improper payment requests. City Hall says attempts by third parties to charge drivers can be reported through official channels. Parking attendants do not issue fines; enforcement remains the responsibility of the traffic authority.

What if the driver has no internet connection?

The official FAQ says the parking period can be purchased once the user regains internet access by entering the address where the vehicle was parked. Because compliance depends on having a valid period recorded in the system, it is advisable to activate the parking as soon as a connection is available and confirm in the app that the purchase was successfully registered.

If the driver leaves before the purchased period ends, there is no refund for unused time. Renewal can be completed in the app until the ten-hour limit is reached.

How reserved spaces for older adults and people with disabilities work

Exemption rules for designated reserved spaces remain in effect. According to the Municipal Department of Transportation, the permit must be displayed visibly on the dashboard and the vehicle must be parked in a space designated for an older adult or a person with a disability. The permit does not exempt payment when the vehicle is in a regular Rio Rotativo Digital space.

What to check before leaving the car

  • Make sure the space is marked as Rio Rotativo Digital.
  • Confirm the address shown by Jaé and the registered license plate.
  • Make sure the digital wallet has enough balance before completing the purchase.
  • Check the end time and renew through the app if needed.
  • Do not hand money to parking attendants or third parties for use of a digital space.
  • After completing ten hours, observe the one-hour interval before parking again in the same area.
