Brasileirão 2026: why 6th place can miss the Libertadores — and when G5 becomes G6 or G7

In 2026, the Brasileirão guarantees five places in the 2027 Libertadores; the cutoff can move to 6th or 7th depending on overlaps with the Copa do Brasil and continental titles.

Short answer: in the 2026 Brasileirão, sixth place does not automatically qualify for the 2027 Copa Libertadores. CBF rules reserve five berths through Série A: 1st through 4th enter the group stage, while 5th enters the preliminary stage. The other two national berths come from the Copa do Brasil: the champion goes to the group stage and the runner-up to the preliminary stage. That is why the Brazilian shorthand “G6” only appears when a berth is reassigned or a club qualifies through another route.

This is a change from the system used through 2025, when the Brasileirão awarded six Libertadores places. For 2026, one of those places was moved to the Copa do Brasil, which now also qualifies its runner-up. The rules are set out in the 2026 Brasileirão Série A Specific Regulations and the 2026 Copa do Brasil Regulations.

The 2026 baseline is G5, not G6

Brasileirão Série A2nd placeGroup stage
Brasileirão Série A3rd placeGroup stage
Brasileirão Série A4th placeGroup stage
Brasileirão Série A5th placePreliminary stage

That is the no-overlap scenario. If the seven national berths are occupied by seven different clubs, finishing 6th in the league is not enough. The club would qualify only if it had its own separate route, such as winning the Copa do Brasil or a continental title.

Why sixth place can miss out

The main source of confusion is treating “G6” as a fixed rule. In 2026, it is not. Sixth place by itself does not generate a Libertadores berth. It only becomes relevant when a berth originally held by another club must be passed down to the highest-placed Brasileirão club that has not yet qualified.

There is also an important difference between the league cutoff becoming G6 and the club that finished 6th qualifying through another title. If the sixth-placed club wins the 2026 Libertadores or Copa Sudamericana, it qualifies through CONMEBOL. That alone does not mean every sixth-placed team would have qualified.

When G5 becomes G6

In practice, one duplicated national berth is enough to push a place back into the league table. The regulations say that the berth is reassigned to the highest-placed Série A club not already qualified.

  • Copa do Brasil champion already qualified: if the cup winner already has a better or equivalent berth through another route, the rules reorganize the Copa do Brasil places. In situations covered by CBF regulations, the runner-up can be upgraded to the direct group-stage berth and a preliminary berth returns to the league.
  • Copa do Brasil champion finishes 5th: because the cup berth is more favorable, the club uses the direct group-stage place; the preliminary berth earned through 5th place is passed to the next Série A club not yet qualified.
  • Copa do Brasil runner-up already qualified: if the runner-up already has a group-stage berth through another competition, or already has a preliminary berth through the Brasileirão, the duplicated berth is redirected to Série A.
  • Continental champion also has a national berth: if the 2026 Libertadores or Copa Sudamericana champion also qualifies through the Brasileirão or Copa do Brasil, it keeps the CONMEBOL title-holder berth and the national berth is passed to the next best league finisher.

With one transfer of this kind, the Brasileirão cutoff will normally reach 6th place. The stage entered by the sixth-placed club depends on the berth that was freed: a group-stage berth remains a group-stage berth, while a preliminary berth remains preliminary.

When G5 can become G7

For 7th place to qualify through the Brasileirão, two berths need to be passed back to the league table. The simplest example is when both Copa do Brasil berths overlap with clubs that are already qualified through other routes. In that case, the two highest-placed league clubs without a berth can be called up, extending the cutoff to 6th and 7th.

The two inherited places are not automatically identical. If the returned berth was direct, the receiving club enters the group stage; if it was preliminary, the receiving club enters the preliminary stage. Depending on how the Copa do Brasil champion and runner-up overlap with the league positions, the outcome can be one direct berth plus one preliminary berth, or two preliminary berths being passed down.

Scenario table: what moves the cutoff

ScenarioLikely effect on the tableWhat to watch

Two national berths return to the leagueG76th and 7th qualify; stage depends on the returned berths

Continental titles can push the line beyond G7

Article 6 of the Série A regulations expressly addresses the winners of the 2026 Libertadores and 2026 Copa Sudamericana. If one of those champions also occupies a national berth, the Brasileirão or Copa do Brasil berth is reassigned to the highest-placed Série A club not already qualified.

That means G7 is not an absolute mathematical ceiling. In combinations involving Brazilian continental champions and Copa do Brasil overlaps, the cutoff can move beyond 7th. The accurate summary is: G5 is the initial guarantee through the Brasileirão; G6, G7 or a wider cutoff depend on results in other competitions and duplicated qualification routes.

There is an additional rule for Copa do Brasil finalists

The Copa do Brasil regulations state that only clubs participating in Série A in 2027 may take part in the 2027 Libertadores. If the Copa do Brasil champion is not in the top division the following year, the direct berth is reassigned under the competition rules; if the runner-up also cannot use its berth, the preliminary place can be passed to the highest-placed Brasileirão club not already qualified.

Another useful caveat: reaching the Copa do Brasil semifinals does not create a continental berth. The regulations explicitly state that semifinal losers do not qualify for the Libertadores through this competition.

How to read the standings without assuming an automatic G6

  1. Start with the fixed G5 from the Brasileirão: 1st to 4th in the group stage and 5th in the preliminary stage.
  2. Mark the Copa do Brasil champion and runner-up and check whether they already have a berth through another competition.
  3. Check the 2026 Libertadores and Copa Sudamericana champions and whether they also occupy a national berth.
  4. For every duplicated national berth, move to the highest-placed Série A club not yet qualified.
  5. Keep track of the stage attached to the transferred berth: group stage and preliminary stage are not automatically interchangeable.
  6. For Copa do Brasil finalists, also check whether they will be in Série A in 2027.

What sixth place means in 2026

Sixth place is a position of possibility, not a guaranteed berth. Without reassignment, it misses the Libertadores. With one duplicated berth, it can qualify; with two, 7th place can also come into play. Only after the Copa do Brasil, the continental titles and all overlaps are settled can the true Libertadores cutoff be identified with certainty.

For the regulatory basis, see the 2026 Brasileirão Série A regulations, especially Article 6, and the 2026 Copa do Brasil regulations, Article 4. CBF also recorded the change after the Série A Technical Council, when it announced the reduction from six to five league berths and the creation of the second Copa do Brasil berth.
