Water bill with new QR Code in August: is NFAg legitimate? See what has changed in Sergipe

Iguá announced new NFAg fields and QR Code for checking the water bill. Understand what is legitimate, what has not changed and how to check the invoice.

If you received a water bill from Iguá Sergipe with different fields and a new QR Code, the visual change, in itself, is not a sign of a scam. The concessionaire announced on July 17, 2026 that, from August 1, its invoices would begin to incorporate information related to the Electronic Water and Sanitation Invoice, the NFAg. Among them are the invoice number and a QR Code intended for consulting the tax document.

There is, however, an important distinction: the NFAg QR Code is presented by Iguá itself as a means of consulting the invoice, not as a new way of paying the bill. Therefore, finding this code on the invoice is compatible with the new model announced, but it does not dispense with normal care before payment.

What is NFAg and what is the QR Code for

The NFAg is the Electronic Water and Sanitation Invoice, identified as electronic fiscal document model 75. The national project provides for it to electronically record water and sanitation operations, with authentication by the issuer and monitoring by the Tax Authorities. The official NFAg portal, maintained in the infrastructure of the Virtual Finance Secretariat of Rio Grande do Sul, already provides technical documentation, services and the project environment.

In the Iguá account, the company informs that the access key and QR Code are used to access the NFAg consultation. In other words, this QR Code has a fiscal function: it allows you to verify the electronic document associated with the charge. The company also informs that the consultation is free and does not require the customer to request the invoice in advance.

This helps clarify a common doubt: there is no need to find an invoice strange just because a QR Code appears that didn't exist before. Care must be taken to confirm whether the charge actually came from the dealership and whether the data matches.

What changed in the water bill

Part of the document transformation began before August. Iguá's own information area records that the printed invoice gained a new model in January 2026, with fields prepared to meet the new tax requirements. For August, the company's statement announced the incorporation of NFAg information and changes to the model of digital versions and duplicates.

In practice, the customer can find elements that were not previously part of the usual bill reading, especially the invoice number, the access key and the QR Code intended for consultation.

The change is related to the implementation of the new tax documents of the Consumption Tax Reform. The Federal Revenue includes NFAg among the new obligations that already have a defined layout.

What should stay the same

According to Iguá Sergipe, the adoption of the new fiscal model does not, in itself, change the charge for water and sewage services. The July statement expressly states that there is no change in the water meter reading, tariff structure, expiration date or payment options because of the new document.

So, they should continue to work in the same way:

  • calculation of consumption based on the water meter reading;
  • the due date of the invoice;
  • the tariff structure applicable to the service;
  • the payment channels and methods already made available by the concessionaire;
  • the bill itself as the document used to make the payment.

The Iguá guidance area also reinforces that the NFAg should not increase the bill value or change the consumption calculation. This does not mean that a bill can never vary from month to month; This means that the simple inclusion of the NFAg or QR Code is not a justification for increasing the charge.

How to check an invoice with the new QR Code

The safest path is not to decide whether the account is true just by appearance. A fake document can also imitate colors, logos and QR Codes.

Compare the charge received with a duplicate obtained directly from Digi Iguá or through the dealership's official channels. Check the registration number, address of the consumer unit, period of consumption, value and expiration date before paying.

It is also important to remember the function of the new code: if it is identified as an NFAg QR Code, its purpose is to consult the tax document. Do not automatically treat this code as a payment QR.

If the invoice presents unexpected differences, Iguá itself advises not to make payment before confirming authenticity. On Sergipe's official website, the dealership provides support via phone/WhatsApp 0800 400 4482 and also makes its digital channels available.

There is a caveat about the NFAg date

The research found an inconsistency that deserves to be noted. The official statement from Iguá Sergipe, published on July 17th, states that the new information would appear on the invoice on August 1st. Indexed versions of the concessionaire's own guidance page also relate the issuance of the NFAg to that date.

On the other hand, a recent version of this same area of guidance consulted during the investigation presented information that the NFAg did not yet have a defined date for issuance. Furthermore, the Federal Revenue page updated on May 6 said that the NFAg had a defined layout, but that the effective date would be determined in a technical document. The NFAg national portal consulted on August 7th continued to inform that its documentation was in draft format and was awaiting a joint normative act for definitive publication.

This does not make the new layout used by Iguá or the QR Code intended for the consultation false. It just means that it is more prudent to separate two statements: the inclusion of new fields and the QR Code on Iguá invoices has been officially announced; The statement that the NFAg became mandatory throughout the country exactly on August 1, 2026 does not appear equally clearly in the federal sources consulted.

For the consumer, the practical guidance remains simple: an account with the new fields may be legitimate, but any charge must be confirmed through official channels if there is a discrepancy in value, expiration date, registration data or appearance of the document.
