Updated September 1, 2026. To obtain the free public-transit pass for people with disabilities in Aracaju, the current process starts with the SMTT, where the applicant submits documents and schedules a medical assessment. The benefit is not granted solely because a diagnosis is presented: the assessment is mandatory for approval of the free-pass card, with or without a companion. After approval, the SMTT forwards the case to AracajuCard, and the user moves to the issuance stage for the Mais Aracaju Especial card.
The most important point for anyone finding old instructions online is the address: the SMTT's current service page says the Medical Assessment Sector is at Rua Roberto Fonseca, 200, Inácio Barbosa. Older content still mentions Galeria do Farol or Shopping Farol, but those are not the address currently indicated by the SMTT.
Who can apply for the disability free transit pass in Aracaju
AracajuCard states that the Mais Aracaju Especial card is intended for people with disabilities under the applicable municipal legislation. The SMTT currently organizes assessments for different profiles, including neurodivergent people and people with physical, intellectual or mental, visual, or hearing disabilities. The specific eligibility decision, however, depends on the medical documentation and the assessment.
This means that having a medical report or a diagnostic code does not automatically mean approval. The report supports the application, but the free-pass benefit is granted through the SMTT assessment process. The evaluation also determines whether a companion is needed.
Documents required to start the application
According to the SMTT's current service page, applicants must bring originals and copies to the Medical Assessment Sector:
- identity document;
- CPF taxpayer number;
- medical report with the CID/ICD diagnostic code;
- current, legible proof of address from Aracaju, Barra dos Coqueiros, Nossa Senhora do Socorro, or São Cristóvão.
The SMTT also lists additional documents for specific situations:
- applicants under 18: copy of the responsible adult's ID and CPF;
- visual disability: visual-acuity test;
- hearing disability: audiometry.
An SMTT guidance update published in November 2025 adds that the medical report must be complete, identify the disability, and, when necessary, be accompanied by tests supporting the condition and the need being evaluated.
Does the medical report have to be less than six months old?
There is a difference between official pages. The current SMTT checklist asks for a medical report with CID/ICD but does not state a maximum age for that report. AracajuCard's general Mais Aracaju Especial page, however, still mentions a medical report issued within the previous six months. To avoid an unnecessary trip, the safest option is to bring a recent report and, if yours is older, confirm in advance with the Medical Assessment Sector whether it will be accepted.
Where and how to schedule the medical assessment
The first step is in person at the SMTT, Rua Roberto Fonseca, 200, Inácio Barbosa. The applicant submits the documentation and schedules the medical evaluation. In its November 2025 update, the SMTT reported service Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Because service hours can change, it is wise to confirm before traveling using the current contacts published by the SMTT.
On the SMTT contact page, the Medical Assessment unit lists (79) 98836-6497 and (79) 98836-6535; the agency also lists (79) 3179-1410 for the assessment/Programa Atende service.
For children, the SMTT has clarified that the child does not need to be present merely to schedule the assessment, but the beneficiary's presence is mandatory on the day of the evaluation.
How the assessment and companion authorization work
The medical assessment is the step that determines approval of the free pass and whether the benefit will be granted with or without a companion. AracajuCard states that the companion is included only when that need is recognized on the card, so it is not automatic for every disability-pass holder.
In practical terms, bring documents and examinations that help demonstrate not only the diagnosis but also the functional limitations relevant to travel and any need for assistance from another person. The assessment is individual.
What happens after approval
After approval, the SMTT says it forwards the case to AracajuCard and notifies the user. From that point on, the card-production stage is handled with the fare-card operator.
The SMTT instructs users to schedule card production through (79) 3045-2550. AracajuCard's current in-person service page also says disability gratuity service, after approval by the SMTT assessment, is provided at the CEAC unit in Aracaju Parque Shopping, with advance scheduling through Agenda Fácil. The posted hours are 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. on business days.
For a first card, the specific Mais Aracaju Especial pages indicate that the user should present an identity document, CPF, and SMTT approval; there is no issuance fee, and biometric registration is performed. AracajuCard gives an estimated availability time of about two business days after registration is completed.
Yellow, purple and gray: what changes in the Mais Aracaju Especial card
AracajuCard maintains three versions of the Especial card, and the color reflects how the benefit is used:
| Card | Companion | Main use described |
|---|---|---|
| Yellow | No companion | Free travel; passing through the turnstile is not mandatory. |
| Purple | With one companion | Free travel for the holder and authorized companion; passing through the turnstile is not mandatory. |
| Gray | May be configured according to the authorization | Use at the validator with biometric identification and mandatory passage through the turnstile. |
AracajuCard itself states that companion authorization must be shown on the card after the need is established. Therefore, the user does not choose the color independently: the card issued follows the result of the process.
How to use the card without risking a block
The Mais Aracaju Especial is personal and non-transferable. The benefit must be used in the presence of the registered holder. In SMTT guidance about companion cards, the practical rule is to present the beneficiary first and only then have the companion pass. The agency warns that if the companion goes through before the holder, the card can be blocked.
For the gray card, AracajuCard instructs the user to tap the card on the validator and complete biometric identification before going through the turnstile. For yellow and purple cards, the general page states that going through the turnstile is not mandatory. Because operating procedures can be adjusted, users should also follow the instructions provided when the card is issued.
Where the free pass is valid
According to AracajuCard, the Mais Aracaju Especial provides 100% fare exemption on urban public-transit vehicles serving Aracaju and the metropolitan municipalities covered by the system: Nossa Senhora do Socorro, São Cristóvão, and Barra dos Coqueiros, in addition to the capital.
