Starting in November 2026, Xbox Cloud Gaming will no longer be included without monthly hour limits for eligible Game Pass plans. Microsoft confirmed a different monthly allowance for each tier: 15 hours for Game Pass Ultimate, 10 hours for Premium and 5 hours for Essential. After using the included allowance, subscribers will be able to buy additional cloud playtime through the Xbox Store.
How many Xbox Cloud Gaming hours each plan will include
| Plan | Cloud hours included per month | Practical view |
|---|---|---|
| Game Pass Ultimate | 15 hours | The largest allowance of the three plans. |
| Game Pass Premium | 10 hours | Five fewer hours than Ultimate. |
| Game Pass Essential | 5 hours | One third of the Ultimate allowance. |
Today, before the change takes effect, eligible subscribers can stream without these monthly limits. In its September 3, 2026 announcement, Xbox estimated that the new rule will affect about 4% of Game Pass subscribers. The exact start date within November has not yet been announced.
How the hours will be counted
The key is to separate what has been confirmed from what still needs to be explained. Xbox confirmed that each plan will include a set number of cloud gaming hours each month, but it did not detail how the meter will work.
So far, there is no official confirmation on whether queue time, loading, paused gameplay or idle periods will count; Microsoft has also not said how partial minutes will be rounded, which day the allowance will renew, or whether unused hours can roll over. Microsoft itself said it will explain in November how players can check their remaining time.
For personal planning, the safest interpretation is to treat the allowance as a monthly bank of cloud gaming time without assuming rounding or renewal rules that have not been published.
Simple usage scenarios
| Usage pattern | Ultimate — 15h | Premium — 10h | Essential — 5h |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1-hour sessions | 15 sessions | 10 sessions | 5 sessions |
| 2-hour sessions | 7 full sessions plus 1 hour remaining | 5 sessions | 2 full sessions plus 1 hour remaining |
| 30 minutes per day | 30 days | 20 days | 10 days |
These examples are simple arithmetic to make the allowance easier to visualize; they do not describe an official session rule because Xbox has not yet published the meter details.
What happens when the allowance runs out
After using all hours included with the plan, subscribers will be able to purchase additional cloud playtime through the Xbox Store. Microsoft has not yet announced the price, package sizes, any expiration rules for purchased hours, or the markets where each option will be available. The announcement says availability, purchasing options and cloud gaming features may vary by market.
Also beginning in November, Xbox plans to allow cloud gaming without a Game Pass subscription: players will be able to buy standalone hours and stream eligible games they own on supported devices. That creates an option for occasional access without maintaining a recurring subscription.
The monthly cap is not the free 1-hour ad-supported session
They are separate initiatives. On July 23, 2026, Xbox began a test with Xbox Insiders of free, ad-supported streaming for select games from the user's own library. In that test, each session has a one-hour limit and ads play before the session begins.
That one-hour session in the ad-supported test is not the 5-, 10- or 15-hour monthly Game Pass allowance announced for November. It also should not be read as one free hour per month: it is a separate test with its own rules and limited availability across supported devices and regions.
What to review before November
- Your plan: confirm whether you use Ultimate, Premium or Essential and compare the corresponding allowance.
- Your real cloud usage: estimate how many hours per month you rely on streaming, especially if you play on a phone, tablet, TV or Xbox One.
- Extra hours: wait for pricing, package sizes and market availability before estimating the cost of exceeding the allowance.
- Games and devices: buying hours without Game Pass will apply to eligible games the user owns on supported devices; the list and availability may vary.
- The meter: check the official guidance when Xbox explains how to view remaining time.
What has not been announced yet
As of September 4, 2026, Xbox has not publicly confirmed the exact November activation date, the price of extra hours, purchasing formats, whether unused hours can roll over, the monthly renewal timing, or exactly how queueing, loading, pausing and idle time will be counted. These points should be treated as pending, not as established rules.
