In the 2026/27 Champions League, the accumulation rule changes depending on the stage of the competition. From the first league-phase match onward, a player is suspended for accumulation after the 4th yellow card and then after the 6th, 8th and subsequent even-numbered cautions. In practical terms, a player is one booking away from suspension when sitting on 3, 5 or 7 yellows.
League-phase cautions are not wiped before the knockout stage: they carry into the knockout phase play-offs, round of 16 and quarter-finals. The reset comes after the quarter-finals, when accumulated yellows are not carried into the semi-finals. The wording of the regulations, however, distinguishes accumulated cautions from a suspension that has already been triggered.
How many yellow cards trigger a suspension in the 2026/27 Champions League?
| Stage | When accumulation triggers a suspension | What happens to the cards |
|---|---|---|
| Before the league phase | 3rd, 5th, 7th yellow and subsequent odd-numbered cautions | A separate reduction rule applies after every two eligible rounds; at the end of the play-offs, yellow cards and pending yellow-card suspensions expire before the league phase. |
| From the league phase onward | 4th, 6th, 8th yellow and subsequent even-numbered cautions | Cards and pending suspensions carry into the next round, subject to the reset exceptions in Article 63.04. |
| After the quarter-finals | The accumulated yellow-card record is reset | Yellow cards are not carried into the semi-finals. |
In the league phase, the fourth yellow is the first one that brings a ban
The most common source of confusion is the first suspension threshold. Article 63 of the official 2026/27 UEFA Champions League regulations, in force since 29 July 2026, states that from the first league-phase match onward, a player or team official is suspended for the next competition match after receiving four yellow cards that did not result in a red card. Further accumulation suspensions follow on the 6th, 8th and subsequent even-numbered cautions.
Example: if a player enters the final league-phase match with three yellows and receives a fourth, the suspension must be served in the next competition match for which the player would be eligible. If the club advances to the knockout phase play-offs or directly to the round of 16, the ban does not disappear merely because the stage has changed.
When is a player one booking away from suspension?
There is no special official label equivalent to the Brazilian expression “pendurado”; the practical question is whether the player is one yellow away from a ban. From the league phase onward, that happens at 3, 5, 7, 9... accumulated yellows. The next caution takes the total to 4, 6, 8, 10... and triggers the automatic one-match suspension.
- 3 yellows: the next one, the 4th, triggers a suspension.
- 5 yellows: the next one, the 6th, triggers a suspension.
- 7 yellows: the next one, the 8th, triggers a suspension.
That is why saying that “three yellows mean a suspension” is incorrect for the 2026/27 league phase and knockout stage. The three-card threshold belongs to the rule used before the league phase.
Are yellow cards reset between the league phase and the knockout stage?
No. Article 63.03 says that single yellow cards and pending suspensions are carried forward to the next round of the competition, except for the cases in Article 63.04. The total accumulated in the league phase therefore remains relevant in the knockout phase play-offs, round of 16 and quarter-finals.
This changes the risk for a player who finishes the league phase on three yellows: that player enters the knockout stage one caution away from suspension. The same logic applies at five or seven.
When are the cards wiped?
The regulations provide two distinct reset points:
- After the qualifying play-offs, before the league phase: all yellow cards and pending yellow-card suspensions expire and are not carried into the league phase.
- After the quarter-finals: all accumulated yellow cards expire and are not carried into the semi-finals.
It is important not to confuse wiping the caution count with cancelling a suspension that has already been triggered. Article 63.04 expressly says that, after the quarter-finals, yellow cards expire; it does not repeat there the expiry of “pending yellow-card suspensions” that is stated for the end of the play-offs. Read together with Article 63.03, that means a sanction already generated by the threshold card remains to be served.
What if the suspension-triggering yellow comes in the quarter-finals?
The post-quarter-final reset protects a player from carrying a simple caution balance into the semi-finals when that balance has not yet produced a ban. For example, a player who finishes the quarter-finals on three or five yellows does not carry that total forward.
If the player reaches the number that triggers a sanction — such as the 4th or 6th yellow — the situation is different: the suspension was generated before the caution record was wiped. Under the combined wording of paragraphs 63.03 and 63.04, the pending ban must be served in the next match for which the player would otherwise be eligible.
What if there is a red card?
Yellow-card accumulation should not be confused with a sending-off. The same Article 63 provides, as a rule, that a player sent off is automatically suspended for the next match in a UEFA club competition. Serious offences may result in a longer sanction. The accumulation thresholds also refer specifically to yellow cards that did not result in a red card.
Practical summary for following the knockout stage
- From the league phase onward, the first accumulation suspension is on the 4th yellow.
- The next ones come on the 6th, 8th and subsequent even-numbered cautions.
- A player is one booking away from suspension on 3, 5, 7 and so on.
- League-phase yellows carry into the knockout stage; there is no reset before the knockout phase play-offs or round of 16.
- After the quarter-finals, accumulated yellows are wiped and are not carried into the semi-finals.
- A suspension already triggered by the threshold card should not be treated as a simple caution balance that is wiped.
