How Confiança won promotion from Série D in 2014: unbeaten run and the Jacuipense tie

Promotion was sealed in the quarterfinals: a 2-0 away win, a 0-0 return and an unbeaten 12-match run up to the Série C place.

Confiança earned promotion from Série D to Série C on October 19, 2014, after a 0-0 draw with Jacuipense at Estádio Presidente Médici in Itabaiana. The result completed a tie that had begun with a 2-0 away win in Feira de Santana and sent the club to the Série D semifinals — the stage that, under that season's rules, guaranteed promotion to the 2015 Série C.

By the final whistle against Jacuipense, Dragão was still unbeaten: 12 matches, seven wins and five draws, with 20 goals scored and only six conceded. That campaign helps explain why 2014 returned to the center of the club's memory after the 2026 relegation: the 2027 Série D will be Confiança's first season in the division since that promotion. But the precedent needs to be read carefully because the current fourth-tier format is different.

What decided promotion in 2014

The key point is simple: Confiança did not need to win the Série D title to go up. Promotion was confirmed in the quarterfinals. Under that format, the winners of the four quarterfinal ties advanced to the semifinals and, at the same time, secured the four places in the following year's Série C.

Confiança reached the quarterfinals after winning its first-stage group and eliminating Central of Caruaru in the round of 16. The opponent in the promotion tie was Jacuipense. The first leg was played on October 12 at Joia da Princesa in Feira de Santana, and the return one week later in Itabaiana.

First stage: top of the group with five wins and three draws

Confiança played in Group A4 with Porto-PE, Globo-RN, Betim-MG and Vitória da Conquista-BA. Because the group had five teams, each club played eight matches, home and away. The top two advanced to the knockout stage.

Betinho's team finished first with 18 points, five wins, three draws and no losses. It scored 16 goals and conceded five. The consistency included strong home results and important points away from home.

The 5-1 win over Betim was the biggest scoreline of that stretch. The 3-0 win over Vitória da Conquista at Sabino Ribeiro clinched qualification, and the 1-1 draw with Porto in the next round secured first place in the group.

Round of 16: building an advantage against Central

In the round of 16, Confiança faced Central of Caruaru. It won the first leg 1-0 on September 28 at Lacerdão, with a goal by Leandro Kível. In the return on October 4 at Presidente Médici, it drew 1-1 and advanced.

That took the team to the quarterfinals still unbeaten. It had ten matches without a loss and the chance to turn the next tie into national promotion.

Jacuipense 0-2 Confiança: the advantage that opened the path

The first quarterfinal was played on October 12, 2014, at Joia da Princesa. Confiança beat Jacuipense 2-0. Eron opened the scoring and Bibi added the second goal.

The away win completely changed the return-leg scenario. Because the tie was decided over two matches, Confiança could lose by one goal in Itabaiana and still advance. A 2-0 Jacuipense win would take the decision to penalties; a larger margin would qualify the Bahia side.

The 2-0 win also extended Confiança's unbeaten run to 11 matches. Contemporary coverage was already treating the next game as the match that could seal promotion.

Confiança 0-0 Jacuipense: the match that confirmed Série C

On October 19, in front of roughly nine thousand supporters at Presidente Médici, Confiança managed its advantage and drew 0-0. Jacuipense needed to attack, created dangerous situations and applied pressure at times, but could not erase the deficit from the first leg.

The aggregate score ended 2-0 to Confiança. Reaching the semifinal automatically meant promotion to the 2015 Série C. At that point, the campaign stood at 12 matches, seven wins, five draws, 20 goals scored and six conceded. Goalkeeper Everson had been beaten, on average, only once every two matches.

ge's coverage at the time described the achievement as the first promotion by a Sergipe club in Brazil's national championships. For Confiança, it was also a return to the third tier after five years.

What happened after promotion

Promotion did not mean the Série D title. Already promoted, Confiança faced Tombense in the semifinal. It lost the first leg 1-0 in Tombos on October 25 and drew the return 1-1 in Itabaiana on November 2. Tombense advanced and later won the championship.

That sequence matters because it prevents a common confusion when 2014 is retold: Confiança's major achievement was the promotion secured in the quarterfinals, not the national trophy.

Why 2014 is a useful precedent for 2027 — and why it is not a recipe

Relegation from the 2026 Série C confirmed Confiança in the 2027 Série D, marking the club's return to the fourth tier after 13 seasons. The memory of 2014 is unavoidable because that was the last cycle in which Dragão had to climb out of Série D to regain national ground.

The precedent shows concrete elements: Confiança finished the group stage in first place, entered the knockout rounds unbeaten, built an advantage away from home and sustained a highly efficient defense. Promotion came from the combination of a consistent campaign and knockout performance, not from a single match.

But the 2027 rules will not be a repeat of 2014. The CBF has already set, in its calendar framework, a Série D with 96 clubs and six promotion places to Série C. The recent model also expanded the knockout phase and created playoffs to fill additional promotion spots. The specific 2027 regulations should be checked once published, because operational details can change.

So the historical value of 2014 lies less in copying the route and more in remembering the competitive pattern that worked: first-stage leadership, a low goals-against rate, the ability to earn points away from home and emotional control in knockout football. In 2027, the objective will be the same — returning to Série C — but the path will be longer and will depend on the rules of the new Série D.
