Is Metroid Ravenous a Dread sequel? What Nintendo confirmed about the new Switch 2 2D game

Ravenous is the new 2D Metroid for Switch 2 and brings Samus’s Metroid powers back, but Nintendo has not defined it as a direct Dread sequel.

Metroid Ravenous has not yet been officially presented as a direct sequel to Metroid Dread. In the September 9, 2026 announcement, Nintendo called it an “all-new 2D adventure” starring Samus Aran and, on the official game page, “the latest game in the 2D Metroid series.” That confirms Ravenous belongs to the same 2D line, but it does not by itself establish that the story begins immediately after Dread.

There is, however, an important narrative connection: Nintendo itself says Samus will have to use her latent Metroid powers—and, in another official description, her “newly awakened Metroid instincts”—to drain energy from enemies. That makes the link to the franchise’s most recent story arc look deliberate, but Ravenous’s exact place in the timeline has not been explained.

Is Ravenous a sequel to Dread?

The most accurate answer today is: Nintendo has not confirmed Ravenous as a “direct sequel” to Dread. The available official material does not use that label, does not say how much time has passed between the games, and does not state that the new mission starts immediately after the events on ZDR.

What can safely be said is that Ravenous is the next chapter in the 2D Metroid series after Dread. Metroid Dread, released in 2021, continued the classic 2D story line and brought forward biological elements tied to Samus since Metroid Fusion. Nintendo’s own Dread retrospective notes that in Fusion, Samus received a vaccine created from Metroid cells, making that inheritance an established part of the character. The new game once again puts that trait at the center of gameplay.

So calling Ravenous a “successor to Dread” in the sense that it is the next major 2D Metroid is fair. Calling it a “direct continuation of Dread’s story” still requires confirmation Nintendo has not provided.

What connects Ravenous to the franchise’s recent arc

The clearest link is not a returning character or planet, but Samus herself. The official description says she must use latent Metroid powers to survive. In gameplay terms, that becomes a more aggressive loop: counter an attack, create an opening, and absorb the enemy’s energy.

The concept matches the identity of the Metroid creatures, which have long been associated with energy absorption. Nintendo’s official Metroid Dread series-history material explains that Metroids were created by the Chozo and that Samus received Metroid biological material during Fusion. Ravenous therefore is not inventing this connection from scratch; it is using it as the basis of a central mechanic.

What remains unclear is how that ability reached the state shown in the new game and what happened between the two missions. Nintendo has not yet published a detailed chronological synopsis that fills that gap.

What the new story is about

Ravenous begins with Samus in a survival situation. Her ship crash-lands on an unfamiliar moon and she is attacked by a mysterious group. Gravely wounded, the bounty hunter has to explore an underground world, recover resources, and gain new abilities to reach the surface.

Nintendo also identifies five enemies as Space Ninjas. They are positioned throughout the labyrinthine setting and are set to face Samus in close-range duels with their own weapons. That gives the announcement a second axis beyond traditional exploration: a personal pursuit and a defined group of high-level enemies to overcome.

What has changed in the gameplay shown so far

The most distinctive new element is energy absorption. Rather than simply destroying enemies at range, Samus can use a counter to stun them and then drain their energy. The official description suggests timing matters: the drain must be performed quickly after the stun.

At the same time, Ravenous keeps recognizable series pillars: interconnected corridors, ability acquisition, beams and missiles, bosses, and exploration of a labyrinthine environment. Nintendo classifies the game as action, adventure, and shooter, for one player.

The official pages also list amiibo compatibility, surround sound, and HDR on compatible TVs. The North American Special Edition page additionally lists 120 Hz output support, although technical features may depend on the game mode and display hardware being used.

Confirmed editions and amiibo

The Direct confirmed a standard edition and a Special Edition, both launching on January 28, 2027. The Special Edition includes the game, a SteelBook case, and a Samus (Metroid Suit) amiibo figure from the Metroid Ravenous series. Nintendo also announced individual Samus and Chozo Statue figures for launch.

The official Special Edition page says the Samus (Metroid Suit) amiibo can provide in-game extras, but the functionality details have not yet been announced. Any more specific list of bonuses would therefore be speculation at this stage.

What has not been confirmed yet

  • that Ravenous begins immediately after Dread’s ending;
  • how much time has passed between the two adventures;
  • a return to ZDR, the E.M.M.I., or specific Dread characters;
  • the full explanation for the current state of Samus’s Metroid powers;
  • the development team, which is not identified on the initial official pages consulted;
  • all amiibo functionality details.

How to describe Metroid Ravenous without going beyond the announcement

The safest wording is: Metroid Ravenous is the franchise’s new 2D game, exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2, launching January 28, 2027, and it brings Samus’s Metroid powers back as a central element. The connection to Dread is strong and deliberate, but Nintendo has not yet confirmed that it is a direct sequel or revealed its exact place in the timeline.

Until Nintendo publishes a more detailed story explanation, that distinction helps separate what the Direct actually confirmed from interpretations suggested by the trailer and the franchise’s continuity.
