Expired Brazilian CNH in 2026: who is valid through Dec. 9 and when the 30-day renewal period starts

Contran Deliberation 279 extended through December 9 the validity of CNHs and ACCs expiring from June 5 through December 8, 2026. See who is covered and when the 30-day renewal window begins.

If the original expiry date on your Brazilian National Driver's License (CNH) or Authorization to Drive a Moped (ACC) falls between June 5 and December 8, 2026, inclusive, its validity was exceptionally extended through December 9, 2026. The rule is set out in Contran Deliberation No. 279 of September 9, 2026.

The key planning point is this: the additional 30-day renewal period starts only after the extension ends. In practical terms, that later window opens on December 10, 2026. The Deliberation does not state a calendar end date for those 30 days; a simple count of 30 consecutive days starting on December 10 places day 30 on January 8, 2027. Because state Detrans handle procedures and service calendars, confirm the operational deadline with your state's agency before leaving renewal until the last moment.

Who is covered by the extension through December 9

The rule uses the document's expiry date as the criterion. It covers CNHs and ACCs expiring from June 5, 2026 through December 8, 2026. You do not have to apply for the extension: the Deliberation expressly says that no new document or procedure is required to record the extended validity.

Original expiry dateCovered by Deliberation 279?What happens
Before June 5, 2026No, not under this ruleDeliberation 279 does not extend that document's validity.
June 5 through December 8, 2026YesThe CNH or ACC remains valid through December 9, 2026.
After December 8, 2026No, not under this ruleThe document follows the validity rules normally applicable to it.

December 9 is the new validity date, not the start of a late period

For covered documents, December 9, 2026 is the end date of the exceptional extension. That means a document that originally expired, for example, in July, August, September or November 2026 continues to be treated as valid through that date, provided the driver is not in one of the situations excluded by the rule.

The Deliberation also requires bodies within Brazil's National Traffic System to observe the extension, including during traffic enforcement. The extension therefore does not depend on a visible annotation appearing on the physical or digital license.

When the 30 days for renewal begin

Paragraph 1 of Article 2 is straightforward: once the extension period ends, covered drivers have 30 days to renew their driving document. Since the extension runs through December 9, the subsequent period begins on December 10, 2026.

This distinction prevents a common mistake: the 30 days should not be counted from the original date printed on a CNH or ACC that falls within the exceptional window. For drivers covered by Deliberation 279, the reference point becomes the end of the extension.

Who cannot rely on this extension

The Deliberation expressly excludes drivers whose right to drive is suspended or revoked. An extension of the document's validity does not override a suspension or revocation.

It is also important not to broaden the rule by analogy. The text names CNH and ACC. It does not say that every other driving document or administrative situation automatically receives the same treatment.

Do I need a new license or a registration procedure now?

Not to record the extension. Paragraph 2 of Article 2 says that no new document or specific procedure is necessary for the extension to take effect. This does not stop a driver from starting the renewal process through the state Detran when the service is available; it only means that the additional validity does not depend on an application.

At renewal time, individual requirements may still vary according to license category, the driver's record and the general rules that apply. Check your state's Detran renewal service for exams, documents, fees and appointment requirements.

What changed from the earlier extension

In June 2026, Contran Deliberation No. 278 created an initial window for documents expiring from June 5 through September 8. Contran's official registry says that Deliberation was approved by Resolution No. 1,029/2026. The official Contran list of deliberations shows Deliberation 279 published on September 9, 2026 with the new extension.

In practice, the September rule expands the range of covered expiry dates through December 8, 2026 and sets December 9, 2026 as the common new validity date for covered documents.

Why this transition exists

The broader context is the recent change in Brazilian driver licensing rules. Law No. 15,428/2026 amended the Brazilian Traffic Code, including provisions on examinations and renewals. Among other points, it provides for automatic renewal for a driver registered in the National Positive Drivers Registry (RNPC), while still requiring the physical and mental fitness examination.

Deliberation 279 should be read as an exceptional validity rule during this adjustment period. It does not replace all permanent CNH renewal rules.

Checklist: what to do based on your expiry date

  1. Check the original expiry date on your CNH or ACC.
  2. If it falls from June 5 through December 8, 2026, treat the document as extended through December 9, 2026.
  3. Confirm that your right to drive is not suspended or revoked.
  4. Do not request a replacement solely to record the extension: the rule says no such procedure is required.
  5. Plan renewal from December 10, 2026 onward and check your state's Detran for the operational calendar, exams, fees and service arrangements.

If information conflicts, use the federal rule as the reference point

Because the Deliberation was published very recently, some state service pages may take time to reflect the new December window. If you find older information referring only to September, compare it with Contran Deliberation No. 279 and look for an update from your local Detran.

The central answer is clear: CNHs and ACCs expiring from June 5 through December 8, 2026 remain valid through December 9; after that, the 30-day renewal period begins, except for drivers whose right to drive is suspended or revoked.
