When the doubt is between a fim and afim, pronunciation does not help much: the two forms sound very similar, but they perform different functions in Portuguese. The safest route is to test the meaning of the sentence. If it expresses purpose, desire, or interest, the spelling is generally a fim, as two words. If it expresses similarity, relation, or affinity, use afim, as one word.
The substitution test in a few seconds
Instead of memorizing an isolated definition, replace the expression with another phrase that carries the same meaning. The test below solves most real-life cases.
| What does the sentence mean? | Substitution test | Form |
|---|---|---|
| Purpose or goal | Replace it with “para”, “com o objetivo de”, or “com a finalidade de”. | a fim de |
| Desire or interest | Replace it with “com vontade de”, “querendo”, or “interessado em”. | a fim de |
| Similarity, relation, or affinity | Replace it with “semelhante”, “relacionado”, “compatível”, or “próximo”. | afim / afins |
When to write “a fim” as two words
The sequence a fim de commonly indicates purpose. In this use, it can often be replaced by para without changing the core meaning.
In standard usage, the de is not dropped; the expected construction is a fim de que, not “a fim que”.
In professional writing, “para” is often more direct
A fim de is correct, but it can sound more formal. In emails, instructions, and documents, para often produces a shorter sentence: “Envie os dados até sexta para concluirmos a análise.” If choosing between the two constructions does not change the meaning, prefer the one that makes the text clearer.
“Estar a fim de” is also written separately
In informal Brazilian Portuguese, estar a fim de can express desire, willingness, or interest — including interest in someone. Although this use does not literally express purpose, the spelling remains separate. The test changes: instead of replacing it with “para”, try “estar com vontade de” or “estar interessado em”.
- “Estou a fim de sair hoje.” → “Estou com vontade de sair hoje.”
- “Ela não está a fim de discutir isso agora.” → “Ela não quer discutir isso agora.”
- “Ele está a fim de uma colega.” → “Ele está interessado em uma colega.”
In very formal writing, this colloquial construction can be replaced by more specific verbs such as querer, pretender, or ter interesse em. That is a matter of register, not spelling correctness.
When to write “afim” as one word
Afim is used when the sentence refers to affinity, similarity, closeness, or a relation between elements. As an adjective, it can vary in number: afim in the singular and afins in the plural.
- “As duas equipes trabalham em áreas afins.” → areas that are related.
- “Os autores defendem ideias afins.” → ideas that are similar.
- “Buscamos um profissional com formação afim à função.” → training related to the role.
The plural form is especially common in phrases such as “áreas afins”, “temas afins”, “disciplinas afins”, and “atividades afins”. It also appears substantivized in constructions such as “livros, revistas e afins”, meaning related items.
The most confusing error: “afim de”
When the intended meaning is para, com vontade de, or interessado em, writing “afim de” merges two different structures. Compare:
- “Estou afim de viajar.” → not appropriate with this meaning; use “Estou a fim de viajar.”
- “Criamos o guia afim de orientar novos usuários.” → use “Criamos o guia a fim de orientar...” or, more directly, “Criamos o guia para orientar...”.
- “Marketing e vendas são áreas a fim.” → if the idea is a relation between the areas, use “áreas afins”.
Do not decide only by looking at the next word. Meaning is decisive: a fim is part of a phrase, while afim describes or names something that has a relation of affinity.
How to decide in conversation, essays, and professional writing
| Context | Sentence | How to test it | Choice |
|---|---|---|---|
| Conversation | “Você está ___ de pedir pizza?” | “Você está com vontade de pedir pizza?” | a fim |
| Conversation | “Temos gostos ___.” | “Temos gostos semelhantes.” | afins |
| Essay | “A escola criou o projeto ___ ampliar o acesso.” | “A escola criou o projeto para ampliar o acesso.” | a fim de |
| Professional writing | “Procura-se experiência em áreas ___.” | “... em áreas relacionadas.” | afins |
| Professional writing | “Atualizamos o fluxo ___ reduzir retrabalho.” | “... para reduzir retrabalho.” | a fim de, or simply para for concision |
Four traps to check before sending
- Mixing up purpose and affinity. If you can replace the expression with “para”, write a fim de.
- Writing “afim de” to express desire. In “estou a fim de sair”, the correct form is separate.
- Forgetting the plural of “afim”. With a plural noun, common forms are “ideias afins” and “áreas afins”.
- Using “a fim que”. To introduce a purpose clause, the standard construction is a fim de que, equivalent to “para que”.
Final shortcut: three questions before you write
- Does the sentence express a goal? Test “para”. If it works, use a fim de.
- Does it express desire or interest? Test “com vontade de” or “interessado em”. Use a fim de.
- Does it express similarity or relation? Test “semelhante” or “relacionado”. Use afim or afins.
This criterion matches the distinction recorded in reference materials. Brasil Escola distinguishes afim, associated with affinity, from a fim de, associated with purpose. Ciberdúvidas da Língua Portuguesa also records the colloquial Brazilian use of estar a fim de to express desire and confirms the separate spelling; in another answer, it explains a fim de que as equivalent to “para que”.
