If you are planning a short trip to the 2026 Festa de São Francisco das Chagas in Canindé, the best date depends more on the type of celebration you want to experience than on trying to “see everything.” The official program runs from October 7 to 17. From October 8 through 16 there are Masses at several times, a Simplified Novena at 3 p.m., a procession with the Panel of São Francisco at 5:30 p.m., and the Solemn Novena at 6 p.m. October 17, meanwhile, concentrates the closing solemnity, with the Pilgrims’ Mass at 5 a.m., the Solemn Mass at 9 a.m., and the final procession at 5 p.m.
For anyone who wants to combine Mass, novena and a procession in a single day, October 16 is the most complete choice: it is the ninth and final night of the novena, dedicated to the Transitus of Saint Francis, while keeping the regular schedule of Masses and the procession with the panel. If your priority is the main closing procession, choose October 17. For two days, October 16–17 is the most concentrated itinerary; for three days, October 15–17 lets you attend the final two novena nights and the closing events at a less rushed pace.
Quick choice: which date fits what you want to attend
| Priority | Best window | What the official program offers |
|---|---|---|
| Opening of the festival | Oct. 7 | 4 a.m.: raising of the flags and Eucharistic celebration; Masses at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m.; 6 p.m.: procession with the Panel of São Francisco. |
| Mass + novena + procession on the same day | Oct. 8–16 | Masses throughout the day; 3 p.m.: Simplified Novena; 5:30 p.m.: procession with the panel; 6 p.m.: Solemn Novena. |
| Final night of the novena | Oct. 16 | Ninth novena night, centered on the Transitus of Saint Francis, plus the regular daily Masses and procession with the panel. |
| Solemnity and final procession | Oct. 17 | 5 a.m.: Pilgrims’ Mass; 9 a.m.: Solemn Mass; 5 p.m.: closing procession with the image of São Francisco das Chagas. |
1-day itinerary: October 16 for Mass, novena and procession
If you can spend only one day in Canindé and want to experience the three main elements covered here — Mass, novena and procession — October 16 is the most efficient date. From October 8 through 16, Masses at Quadra da Gruta are scheduled for 6 a.m., 7:30 a.m., 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 4 p.m. The Simplified Novena is at 3 p.m. in the Basilica; at 5:30 p.m. the procession with the Panel of São Francisco heads toward Praça dos Romeiros; and at 6 p.m. the Solemn Novena begins.
On the 16th, this sequence carries extra symbolic weight because it is the ninth novena night and the Transitus of Saint Francis. A visitor arriving in the morning can choose one Mass, reserve the afternoon for the novena, and stay for the procession and the solemn celebration. It is a full schedule, but it avoids depending on several separate dates.
If your priority is not the novena but the festival’s main procession, replace October 16 with October 17. The regular October 8–16 novena is no longer held that day, but the Solemnity of São Francisco das Chagas and the 5 p.m. closing procession take place.
2-day itinerary: October 16 and 17 for the climax of the festival
For a short two-day trip, October 16 and 17 concentrate the transition from the last novena night to the closing solemnity.
- Oct. 16: choose a Mass at Quadra da Gruta; if you wish, attend the Simplified Novena at 3 p.m.; at 5:30 p.m. join the procession with the panel; at 6 p.m. attend the ninth night of the Solemn Novena.
- Oct. 17: the program starts early with the Pilgrims’ Mass at 5 a.m. in Praça dos Romeiros. Quadra da Gruta has Masses at 6 a.m., 7:30 a.m., 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.; the 9 a.m. celebration is the Solemn Mass. At 5 p.m., the closing procession leaves Praça da Basílica and ends with a blessing, thanks, farewell and the announcement of the 2027 festival.
This is the strongest choice for visitors who want to experience the closing without staying for the entire week. It also leaves room to attend only one morning celebration and save energy for the late-afternoon events.
3-day itinerary: October 15–17 for a slower pace
With three days, October 15, 16 and 17 form a balanced sequence. On the 15th and 16th, the full rhythm of Masses, novena and procession with the panel is available; on the 17th, you can attend the solemnity and the final procession.
- Oct. 15: eighth novena night. It is a useful day to learn the rhythm of the festival without relying on one single date for the entire program.
- Oct. 16: ninth novena night and the Transitus of Saint Francis. You can prioritize the 6 p.m. Solemn Novena and leave a Mass for the previous day or the closing day.
- Oct. 17: reserve the day for the solemnity. If you do not want to start at 5 a.m., the 9 a.m. Solemn Mass and 5 p.m. procession already provide a clear core for the end of the trip.
The advantage of the third day is not simply to “see more,” but to reduce scheduling conflicts. Instead of squeezing Mass, meals, movement between locations, novena and procession into a tight sequence, you can spread the experiences out.
If you prefer the opening, consider October 7 and 8
There is another option for visitors who are more interested in the beginning of the ritual cycle than in the closing. On October 7, the festival opens at 4 a.m. with the raising of the flags and a Eucharistic celebration; there are Masses at 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. and a procession with the Panel of São Francisco at 6 p.m. On October 8, the regular novena schedule begins: the Simplified Novena at 3 p.m. and the Solemn Novena at 6 p.m., as well as Masses and the 5 a.m. Stations of the Cross.
So an October 7–8 itinerary works well for anyone who wants to witness the opening and the first novena night even without staying for the final solemnity.
Fixed times that help build any itinerary from October 8 to 16
The official program repeats several times each day, which makes planning much easier:
- Stations of the Cross: 5 a.m. on Avenida Francisco Cordeiro Campos, ending with a Eucharistic celebration at Igreja de Cristo Rei.
- Masses at Quadra da Gruta: 6 a.m., 7:30 a.m., 9 a.m., 11 a.m. and 4 p.m.
- Mass at Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora das Dores: 8 a.m.; from October 13 to 16 there is also a 3 p.m. Mass.
- Mass at Matriz de São Pedro: October 13–16 at 10 a.m.
- Simplified Novena: 3 p.m. in the Basilica.
- Procession with the Panel of São Francisco: 5:30 p.m., leaving the Basilica toward Praça dos Romeiros.
- Solemn Novena: 6 p.m. in Praça dos Romeiros.
Confessions are scheduled from October 7 to 17, from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. and from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m., at Complexo São Damião next to Casa dos Milagres. Baptisms are scheduled daily at 10 a.m. at Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora das Dores, with authorization from the home parish priest of the parents and godparents required.
Dates with specific celebrations or groups
In addition to the daily framework, some dates include dedicated Masses or activities that may determine the best trip date for certain pilgrims:
- Oct. 9, 4 p.m.: Mass with cyclists.
- Oct. 10, 8 a.m.: blessing of animals in the courtyard of Zoológico São Francisco; at 9 a.m. there is a Mass with Terço dos Homens and at 4 p.m. a Mass with accordion players.
- Oct. 11, 9 a.m.: Mass with altar servers; at 10 a.m., Mass with cowboys at Praça São Francisco; at 4 p.m., Mass with Terço com as Mulheres.
- Oct. 12, 9 a.m.: Mass with Terço com as Crianças.
If one of these celebrations is the main reason for your visit, organize the trip around it instead of automatically following the October 15–17 suggestion.
How to use the schedule without turning the day into a race
The best itinerary is the one that protects the celebration you consider essential. For most short trips, choose one anchor commitment first — for example, the 6 p.m. Solemn Novena or the 5 p.m. final procession — and only then fit in a Mass and other activities. The program takes place at different points in the religious complex and around the city, so leaving time between events is more realistic than building a minute-by-minute schedule.
Before you travel, check the official 2026 Festa de São Francisco das Chagas page and the full official program in PDF. The Sanctuary also announces broadcasts through TV Santuário on YouTube. Because large events can have operational adjustments, the most recent official version should be your final reference for times and locations.
