P, F or W in a circle on a care label: what it means and what not to try at home

P and F guide professional dry-cleaning; W means professional wet cleaning. Learn what the bars and prohibitions mean and when to use a cleaner.

If a garment care label shows a letter inside a circle, the main message is straightforward: that part of the care instruction is written for a professional textile cleaner, not as a home-cleaning recipe. In the symbol system covered by ISO 3758:2023 and explained by GINETEX, the circle identifies professional textile care. P and F belong to professional dry-cleaning; W identifies professional wet cleaning.

This changes how the label should be read. P, F and W do not mean “buy this product,” and they do not authorize the consumer to reproduce the process at home. The letters and any bars below the circle tell the cleaner which processes and limitations apply. For the consumer, the practical task is to recognize when professional care is required and to avoid risky shortcuts, such as reading W as “machine washable.”

P, F and W: a quick guide

SymbolWhat the cleaner understandsWhat the consumer should do
P inside a circleProfessional dry-cleaning with tetrachloroethene/perchloroethylene and also the solvents permitted under F, subject to the indicated process.Take the item to a professional cleaner and show the label. Do not choose a solvent or improvise dry-cleaning at home.
F inside a circleProfessional dry-cleaning using hydrocarbons suitable for the specified process.Tell the cleaner that the label shows F; do not assume every dry-cleaning process is acceptable.
W inside a circleProfessional wet cleaning: a water-based process using professional equipment, auxiliaries, controlled mechanical action and finishing methods.Do not read W as permission to use a household washing machine. Check the wash-tub symbol separately.

The circle means “professional care,” not simply “dry-clean”

A common misunderstanding comes from calling every circle a “dry-cleaning symbol.” That description works for P and F, but not for W. GINETEX describes the circle as the professional textile-care symbol, covering both professional dry-cleaning and professional wet cleaning.

ISO 3758:2023 establishes a symbol system intended to communicate the most severe treatments that should not cause irreversible damage to the textile article. It covers domestic washing, bleaching, drying and ironing, as well as professional dry- and wet-cleaning. The correct reading therefore comes from the full set of symbols, not from one mark in isolation.

What P says — and what it does not say

P inside the circle is an instruction to the professional about available dry-cleaning processes. According to GINETEX, the process may use tetrachloroethene, also known as perchloroethylene, as well as the solvents included under F. P therefore does not mean “perchloroethylene only,” and it certainly does not tell a consumer to buy or handle that solvent.

The cleaner must still consider the textile material, garment construction, degree of soiling and any process restrictions indicated by a bar below the circle. At home, the useful takeaway is to treat P as professional information and keep the label available for the cleaner.

What F restricts

F inside the circle indicates professional dry-cleaning with appropriate hydrocarbon solvents. In practical terms, it is more restrictive than P regarding the solvent family. The letter exists precisely to help the professional select the permitted process.

For that reason, handing over an item marked F and saying only “it can be dry-cleaned” loses important information. Show the label. If there is a bar under the circle, the process is more restricted still because a mild treatment is required.

W does not mean “washable in water at home”

W inside the circle identifies professional wet cleaning. Although the process uses water, it is not the same as domestic washing. GINETEX notes that the professional equipment, auxiliaries and finishing methods required for wet cleaning cannot be achieved in an ordinary household washing machine.

An item may therefore show W while the domestic wash-tub symbol carries restrictions or is crossed out. There is no contradiction: one symbol addresses professional water-based care; the other tells you what is allowed in domestic washing. They must be read separately.

What the bars below the circle mean

Bars reduce the permitted severity of the process. In dry-cleaning, one bar under P or F indicates a mild process with restrictions that may concern mechanical action, added moisture and/or drying temperature. In wet cleaning, GINETEX distinguishes normal, mild and very mild processes; one bar under W signals mild treatment and two bars signal very mild treatment.

For the consumer, the rule is simple: the more restrictive the symbol, the less sense it makes to “test” a household alternative. The cleaner needs to see the label exactly as printed, including the bars.

What if the circle is crossed out?

A crossed-out dry-cleaning circle means professional dry-cleaning is not allowed. GINETEX also advises that solvent-based stain removers should not be used in that case. A crossed-out wet-cleaning symbol prohibits professional wet cleaning.

Neither prohibition automatically authorizes another treatment. A crossed circle does not mean “wash it at home instead.” Go back to the washing, drying and ironing symbols to see which treatments remain permitted.

Checklist before deciding what to do

  • Read the whole care label. The circle deals with professional care; the wash tub deals with domestic washing.
  • Identify the letter. P and F are professional dry-cleaning codes; W is professional wet cleaning.
  • Look for bars below the circle. They indicate a need for a gentler process.
  • Do not turn the symbol into a home recipe. The letters are intended for professionals and do not specify a safe consumer product.
  • Do not decide by fiber content alone. Finishes, linings, adhesives, prints and garment construction can also restrict care.
  • At the cleaner, show the label and describe the stains. This helps the professional combine the manufacturer's care instruction with the actual condition of the item.

Three examples that prevent common mistakes

1. P in a circle and a crossed-out wash tub

The combination means the item allows a professional dry-cleaning process within P conditions while domestic washing is not allowed. “Just a quick hand wash” still conflicts with the wash-tub instruction.

2. W in a circle and a crossed-out wash tub

The item may be suitable for professional wet cleaning and still be unsuitable for domestic washing. Professional equipment, controlled mechanical action, auxiliaries and finishing are part of the difference.

3. F with one bar underneath

The cleaner should use the hydrocarbon process indicated by F in a mild mode. For the consumer, this is a clear sign that the instruction should not be reduced to “any dry-cleaning is fine.”

What the care label does not guarantee

Care symbols set treatment limits, but they do not promise that every stain can be removed and they do not replace professional assessment. GINETEX says the cleaner should consider the textile materials and degree of soiling when choosing the process, with extra caution for sensitive items and stain-removal tests.

It is also useful to separate a technical standard from local legal requirements. ISO 3758:2023 describes the international symbol system; labeling obligations and trademark rules can vary by country. For interpreting P, F and W, however, the central logic is stable: these are professional-care instructions whose codes and restrictions should not be converted into home experiments.

In one sentence: what to do when you see P, F or W

P or F: take the item to a professional cleaner and let the establishment interpret the permitted solvent and process severity. W: use a service that offers professional wet cleaning and do not confuse the symbol with domestic washing. In every case, read the other care symbols before attempting any treatment at home.
